About the Author

Kathryn (Katie) Schell is the firstborn daughter of Ock Soon Lee and Frank Crimbchin. Katie recalls, as a very young child, the tragic stories of survival her mother would share with her. Katie studied Nursing at Sewickley Valley School of Nursing in Sewickley, Pennsylvania and went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Human Resource Management at Geneva College in Pennsylvania. Katie served people with developmental disabilities for over twenty years and went on to serve the community through Nursing. Her love for her mother and the desire to share her mother's incredible journey remained alive in her heart which culminated in the writing of these memoirs. Katie lives in Harrison City, Pennsylvania, is married to William Schell, the love of her life. Katie has two living children, Thomas Jay Dunn and Bethany Joy Friel. Katie has one son who went to be with the Lord at the young age of 19. His name was Jason Lee Dunn.

What an astounding story! And so beautifully and movingly crafted. Admittedly I may be partial. That first cousin of Frank Crimbchin's - John - the one he had begged to punch him after he had gotten his leg caught in the belt planner - had been my father. And Roberta Rennekamp, his other cousin who had collected clothes to send to Pega, is my aunt. And although I haven't seen Pega herself in a good many years, I remember her well. And her husband Frank. And her kids who used to come and visit our family and play with us when my siblings and I were kids ourselves. But I had never known any of this.
And from very early on, I knew Pega as a very self-effacing, kind, loving woman who was devoted to her family, worked harder than just about anyone else I knew, could grow the biggest and best just about anything on that farm, and made the most delicious donuts I ever had and believe ever will have in my entire life. But I had never known any of this.
I had known Frank had a bum leg and that he had been in the Korean War where he had met Pega and they had fallen in love and that he had returned to get her after. But I had never known any of this.
As I grew older I had also come to know that Frank had his problems and had heard he was a pretty tough disciplinarian and had a temper on him. But I had never known any of this.
Now I know all this. And now that I know all this, it amazes me that the woman can be the woman she is. But then again, maybe it doesn't amaze me at all. Time passes; wars come and go. Each new generation forgets the prior generation's war. And even when remembered, rarely are the people of the country in which it had been fought much remembered, their suffering given any consideration. But this is much more than a story of suffering. It's also a story of survival, sometimes even miraculous survival. No doubt it is heart wrenching. But at the same time it is heart lifting because most importantly it's a story of "Love Beyond Measure." It's a story of how love, perhaps even more so than faith, can move mountains. And it's a story of how two people's belief in love can keep hope alive against seemingly insurmountable odds. And maybe that's not so amazing after all. Maybe that's something we already know. Or at least should know because it's something we need to know.
It's not at all necessary for the reader to have known Frank and Pega Crimbchin to be deeply touched by this book, to actually learn from this book. And there is much to learn from this book. War is hell, appreciate what you have. Those things are in there, no doubt. You'll find it hard to complain about much of anything after reading this book. But I think maybe an even more important lesson is that when we look at a person, what we actually see is who that person has become over time. And that is the result of so many, many things - some of which the person might have had control over, some of which the person might not have.
Katie Schell has given a great gift to Frank and Pega Crimbchin, her parents. She has told a part of their story that perhaps many people didn't know. I certainly didn't, and clearly those who never met them don't. I truly hope that her mother finds joy in knowing that many more people will know Frank as she knew Frank. I think he deserves that; I know she does.
I also hope that many, many people do read this book because it well merits the read; and anyone with a loving heart will not be disappointed. It's a story rarely told. And while it takes you to places you have never been and will most assuredly never want to be, it also introduces you to a woman you will fall in love with as well as the man who fell in love with her. They are two very rare yet very real people - and unquestionably worth meeting.

This book tells the story of Ock Soon Lee and all the hardships that she faced as a little girl growing up in Korea. She faced tragedy after tragedy, but had an indomitable spirit, and kept going. She meets a young American soldier, Frank, who falls in love with this sweet woman. The obstacles that they faced to marry and return to the United States are incredible, but even through unbelievable resistance, Frank persevered and brought Pega back to the United States where they raised a family and built a business. I was horrified and shocked to read all that young Pega went through, and cried when I read of her appreciation and thankfulness of all the modern American conveniences. I couldn't help but fall in love with Pega as I read her story. I loved this book and highly recommend.

This is a great nonfiction book, especially if you are interested in history and other cultures. The main character had a hard life, one that you would think was the basis for a make believe story. But I met one of the daughters, and know for a fact it was all true. This book will hold you in your seat until you finish it to the last page.
Also, a part of the proceeds of the sale goes for humanitarian projects in disadvantaged parts of the world. So it's a double winner.

I was genuinely touched by this true tale of love, hope, and faith.

Events in my life provided a personal connection to Ock Soon Lee and Frank Crimbchin. Just before I turned twenty-one I joined the Army and requested to go to Korea. Most thought I was nuts. No one wanted to go to Korea. Not even in 1985. But I did. I went there to find a wife. And I did.

I'm not a big reader, but I had a hard time putting this down. I couldn't wait to see what happened to Ock Soon and Frank next.

I actually cried at the end.

A big thank you Katie Schell for giving readers a well orchestrated book. From the beautiful, symbolic, cover to the preface and introduction, it was a book that was very difficult to put down. You managed to put together the pieces of the intricate puzzle that made up your parents love story.
The book also gives a very real picture of what was happening in war torn Korea in the early 1950's. It is book that will make you cry but will show you what the power of love and divine intervention can have in a person's life.
It is a book I want to read more than once. Well done!

This is one of the few books that I could not put down until I had finished reading it! Katie did a very good job of describing her mother's horrendous childhood and her parent's eventual love story. Fortunately, my book club (Dutilh United Methodist) was blessed to have Katie and Pega attend our book club meeting and we had a great evening. When I told Pega that I had wanted to hug the hurting, starving child that she was in Korea, she got up and gave ME a big hug. What a wonderful time we had asking questions and listening to the many humorous stories Pega told of her new life in America many years ago. I particularly enjoyed hearing how joyful she was that there was indoor plumbing and how much fun it was doing laundry with the wringer washer her in-law's had. But Pega didn't quit working hard when she came to the states; I loved the story of how she helped her husband cut trees at the cottage with a two-man saw!! I can't imagine this petite woman sawing down trees! Pega has reminded me of just what a great country I was fortunate enough to be born into as she described the poverty and war-stricken country Korea was when she was a child. But she has also reminded me that there are people born with a resilient spirit and this wonderful, Christian lady has displayed just that.
