SFRevu

About Larry Correia and the Monster Hunter International series:

Monster Hunter International will delight fans of action horror with elaborate weaponry, hand-to-hand combat, disgusting monsters, and an endless stream of blood and body parts.”—Publishers Weekly on Monster Hunter Vendetta

A Long Time Until Now

"I loved
Minds of Men."—D.J. Butler, best-selling author of Witchy Eye

"A lot of good scifi writers write war, but sometimes forget that it is fought by actual people, and even in the midst of war, you don't stop being people while you fight. If you want a good read that dares you to think about what it is like to go to war when you can't hide behind the masks you learn to wear, check it out."—John T. Mainer

Dangerous Women Slay in Noir Fatale!

Dangerous Women Slay in Noir Fatale!
The Femme Fatales, those lovely ladies that seduce and distract all who encounter them and bend men to their wills. Oh gods, I love them. Noir Fatale focuses on these women, their stories, their exploits. All while exploring the extremes of fantasy and science fiction landscapes. This anthology holds 13 stories, written by 14 authors. Those authors are Larry Correia, Kacey Ezell, Laurell K. Hamilton, David Weber, Sarah A. Hoyt, Robert Buettner, Alistair Kimble, Griffin Barber, Michael Massa, Hinkley Correia, Patrick Tracy, Steve Diamond, Christopher L. Smith, and Michael Ferguson. Anthologies can be fun, because of their nature, being made of short stories; you can choose how to read them. I admit to being gluttonous and reading all of it within a day! I explored catacombs, moon tunnels, seedy city streets and space stations all while being sat upon by my trusty feline divas. I can honestly say that there isn't a single story that I didn't like! I found new stories by authors I already knew, fleshing out their universes. There are new authors( or at least, new to me), whose works I will be sure to look up! From Madam Sunderhaven, the near-immortal necromancer, to the canny and sly Nina LaFleur, to the dangerous naiveté of Isis Lavender; these femmes strut fully formed from the pages unto the theater of your mind.

Noir Fatale is a solid anthology and fun to read. I was at the panel discussion at LibertyCon that one of the editors mentions in her introduction. I like the varied settings that the stories took place in. From World War II, to the future, the Moon, Toyoko, an alternate history Russia, and other places. All the stories are very good. I have read some of David Weber’s books and felt his story in the collection was the best fiction I have read by him. For some reason, I seem more drawn to the stories featuring detectives. So I really liked Ain’t No Sunshine by Chris Smith and Michael Ferguson, the Easy Rawlins reference I thought was a nice touch. Spoils of War by Kacey Ezell I found very appealing, and would like a follow up novel where Ray Martel searches for Nina LaFleur. I found the non-traditional detectives featured in Steve Diamond and Hinkley Correia stories very entertaining. This is the first time I have read anything by Patrick Tracy and plan to look for more of their fiction. I really liked Larry Correia’s Grimnoir Chronicles, the closing story in the book is set in that Universe and held up to the orignal series. Fans of that series should love this story.

Overview – Noire Fatale is a collection of 13 short stories mostly written with a noire style belonging into a science fiction or fantasy genres. Tough guys --- femme fatales are a common element in most of these stories. Some of the most prominent science fiction and fantasy writers are represented – Davis Weber, Sarah Hoyt, and Larry Correia. Even better – there are some less famous authors that contributed very solid stories. Most of the stories work – a major accomplishment for any short story collection.

Collections of short stories are hard to curate. When you combine noire and science fiction/fantasy, it is far more difficult. Noire is a style – everyone is familiar with post-world war II Los Angeles for instance. In fantasy and science fiction, the author needs to setup their universe and its rules – elevate the noire style – all within 20 or 30 pages. It is surprising that Noire Fatale managed to put together a generally solid collection. Recommended.

The Good – Some of the less famous authors wrote the best stories – especially since most of them have to craft the rules of their universe. Steve Diamond’s The Privileges of Violence is a true standout – a story that combines of horror combined with a fictionalized communist Russia. I hope Steve Diamond writes a full book in that universe.

The Bad – Most of the famous authors attempted to write their contributions to Noire Fatale in their preexisting universes. Kind of disappointing since it gives them a leg-up from their less famous counterparts. In general, I found the stories by these authors less engaging with the exception of Larry Correlia’s contribution. Since his Grimnoir Chronicles are basically noire already, a side-story was more than natural and welcome. It seems that some of these authors saved their best writing for their own books and not this one. These weaker stories are a minority of those present in this book – a minor criticism.

I am not sure if I should love titles like this or back away from them cause every time I finish one, my list of authors I really enjoy and my to-read list get way bigger! There wasn't a story in this I didn't like, and there were a few that had characters I would love to revisit in other titles someday! I highly recommend this book. It's so dang awesome!

A wide range of stories from some very good authors. Place magik is used in a new, to me at least, and interesting way. Another story delves into Japanese myths, which is usually done poorly, and here was both more accurate and entertaining. And the senior author in that family had a story that sent me to a series of his I had not tried, and now am enjoying very much.
  • Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019
OK, let's get this out of the way. Yes, these are short stories. Yes, many (if not all) of them are set in different "universes" created by the various authors. Finally, the stories in this book focus (or include) the femme fatale archetype; with all the stories taking place in a noir-ish setting sprinkled with science fiction and magic.

If none of these float your metaphorical boat, then consider yourself warned. If you have a love of noir, magic, and/or science fiction then you will likely enjoy this book and probably love at least one of the stories. Speaking only for myself, I enjoyed all of the stories, though I particularly enjoyed Ice Queen and Kuro. There is also an excellent story by Larry Corriea set in the Grimnoir setting -- which I love but found frustrating as I now want "more" stories in that setting.

Some very good stories here. Interesting to see familiar authors and characters in a slightly new style, and a good way to meet less familiar ones. Space Noir worked better than expected. A few stories didn't do as good a job of evoking a noir feel, always an issue with "themed" anthologies. High Fantasy seemed especially ill-suited for this.
  • Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2019
I say "mostly awesome" because two of the stories just struck me, personally, as unreadable schlock, but your mileage may (and probably will) vary. That's the beauty of a collection like this: even though two (TWO) stories were unbearable (for me) the other stories were magical, wonderful, wildly entertaining. I very much enjoyed this collection, and I would recommend it to any fan of sci-fi, fantasy, or mystery.

This was a good collection of stories. From magic to sf. The men in these stories do the right thing and get burnt quite a lot. The description says it all about the genre. I was familiar with most of the authors but discovered several new ones to check up on. Enjoy.
