The Making of a Servant: Anchored in Vietnam Paperback – April 26, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
What causes a family to decide to leave their familiar surroundings of home and move to a foreign country where they know no language, no customs, no culture, and have no acquaintances among the people of that country? What is it like as a servant of God to live in the midst of a vicious war that erupts anywhere, anytime, without warning? What happens when one faces sudden death three times and experiences the peace of absolute trust in God and total obedience to him? The lessons learned, the shaping of character through the stresses of life, experiencing the process of being molded into a servant of the Lord is what this book is all about. Such experiences are at times painful, yet exhilarating, meaningful and filled with peace and joy because we are in the center of his will. God gives us our being and leads us in our becoming. The greatest peace is when we discover who God wants us to be, and we are engaged in doing what he leads us to do! This is an on-going process.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2022I don't think I ever met Sam James. He left Vietnam on furlough just as I was beginning to get into Saigon in the Summer of 1971 to spend the weekends helping missionaries in whatever ways a 19-year-old soldier could. But I shared his burden for the Vietnamese people. I appreciate his work and his witness more than I can say.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2018This book was the story of two very godly servants of the one true God. What a blessing to read about and to see God’s hand guiding their steps. Thanks to you for telling us both your story and pointing us to our Savior-Jesus Christ. Just as we tell our precious Vietnam Vets “Thank you for your service”, I say to you,”Thank you for your service to the Kingdom!”
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2018James's gives an honest look back at his life, telling how God led him from North Carolina to Vietnam. I loved the stories about being home in the midst of the war. I recommend this to anyone who loves biographies, war stories, Baptist missions, or Vietnam,

- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2019Sam James is such an inspirational Christian leader. This is his autobiography, which centers around his career as a missionary in Vietnam. His stories from those years are powerful- especially as he witnessed the country's economy and society fall apart in the midst of all out war. He includes so much visual and emotional detail throughout his journey that you really do feel like you are living it through his eyes. Around chapter 20, the reading become tough as he described the absolute depravity of a country he had once loved. This leads to his transformation, however, when he realizes he had been loving the people on his own power, and when that had run out due to the dire circumstances, he learned he had to depend on Christ's unending love. As he puts it, it wasn't his love for Vietnam that brought him there, but Christ's love for the Vietnamese people.
There were so many inspiring moments in Mr. James testimony. His zeal for Christ is so strong and unquenchable that it leaves me wondering if so strong a faith is possible. Along his journey, the Lord laid out each step he was to take, occasionally placing a fork in the road on his path. Even in those decisive moments, Sam recalls the Lord's Spirit always guiding Him one way over the other. He never takes credit for the work God did through Him. Rather, as he describes it, the Lord was simply shaping, forming and filling His vessel to do His work.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2018At each step of his life, Sam provides most interesting details and, sometimes, great, well-written suspense as to what is going to happen next, especially those events that truly were life-threatening. There are so many highlights in the book, I wouldn't know where to start. The story simply flows from one significant event to the next. One of the most inspirational aspects is the grace Sam has in describing life's low points and how he and Rachel, along with their family, faced and overcame disappointments, challenges, and difficulties. This is a must-read for anyone who loves biography and history, especially details about the Vietnam war by those who lived through it, as missionaries, with the Vietnamese people.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2019I purchased both of Samuel James' books...I grew up in the same town as he did and remember him speaking at our church when I was a child - I also grew up with the Vietnam War on the news every night through the majority of my teen years. Reading of Samuel James' journey from his youth and God's journey with him all the way was inspiring. There are stories that make you smile, cry and think. I went back and bought additional copies to share, so that I could keep mine to reread.
