- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2013This was great testing material, love that it actually comes with tear out bubble sheets for the answers and is separated into different segments perfectly spaced. Perfect for testing my 1st grader.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 20131) The OLSAT is a test that requires the students to HEAR the questions read aloud once and to circle the answers in the booklet itself. This book hast the questions printed on top of each question so a) the student can re-read questions and b) the test giver cannot read the questions aloud without either getting a second copy of the book, or writing the questions out onto a separate sheet of paper.
This is a major problem. The most difficult part of the test for MANY kids is to focus on the question that is only read to them ONE TIME. The test questions themselves are not difficult, but remembering what was asked of them is challenging. I had to type out the questions onto another paper and then black out the questions in the book to properly administer this practice test to my daughter.
2) There are lots of typos and improper usage of words. "See the alphabets inside the box. Which of the following words can you not make using the alphabets inside the box." They also use "learnt" instead of "learned" and many many others.
"Alphabets"? really?
3) The actual OLSAT does not use scantron/bubble sheets. This practice book is designed to use them.
Overall the test seems to simple as well. There are questions that ask the student to fill in the missing picture. The question is a 2x2 box with 3 IDENTICAL items in it and a blank spot. All the student has to to is pick the matching picture. It's fine to have one question like this, but out of 12 "missing picture" problems all 12 in one test were just this simple. And in the second set of 12, 5 of them are this simple.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2017Thanks it really helps for my son.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2012The title is confusing. This book is really for the 1st grade students two will be placed into the 2nd grade. I just think this should be clarified.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2017This book, in combination with the NNAT2 test prep book, helped qualify our son for "gifted" services for his upcoming 3rd grade school year. We enjoyed doing the tests together. It was also rewarding as a parent to watch your child's self-esteem grow as they master new concepts and obtain new problem-solving skills.
I recommend making copies of the pages and doing those, as opposed to writing in the book. That way the material lasts longer.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2015Definitely helpful in teaching types of questions on this test.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2018At least part of this book is completely useless. Section II of the first practice test (verbal reasoning) is no test at all. It is a "which of the following pictures goes in the empty box" section where you are supposed to find the pattern of how the shapes/ objects are changing and apply the pattern to the empty box. However, all of the shapes / objects are the same in all the boxes... on every question in the section. Seriously, 12 questions like this: Which of the following items completes the sequence A, A, A, __ ? Is it A, a, F, or duck? There are at least two other questions I have issue with so far (we've only done one of the two test). There is one that asks which item does not belong with the others. The pictures are of a hang glider, a hot air balloon, a car, a paper airplane and a bi-plane. They are looking for car, as it does not fly, but paper airplane is equally correct as it does not transport people. The last is more of a semantic is argument, but you are asked to find the answer that has a rectangle inside of a square. One of the possible answers has a square inside of a square, but is deemed not correct even though a square is a type of rectangle.
