- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2012Mark Rosenfelder has done it again with an outstanding book that covers all manner of possible topics that may arise from the daunting prospect of trying to create your very own language. From his own experiences and information from numerous linguistic sources, he is able to explain in detail the functions and purpose behind nearly every major feature of natural and artificial languages. Even if you're not interested in creating your own language, this book is highly recommended for anyone wanting to gain further insight in how natural languages actually work.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2020Great book for those continuing from the Language Construction Kit. It explores more advanced linguistic topics and even more experimental aspects that have been explored by conlangs.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2014Both this book and its mate, The Language Construction Kit, are must-reads for anyone who is toying with/playing with/building a conlang of his/her own. Mr. Rosenfelder is very clear about the how-to, and gives the basics of language in a easy to understand way, but he does not make it pablum. He also adds a lot of advanced linguistic material, especially in this book, for those who may be more advanced in their understanding of language. I am playing with a conlang of my own, and found both books great helps in building it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2017Excellent book; well organized, thought provoking, informative. This publication has been infinitely helpful in the construction of a deep and well-developed conlang. This is a whole lot more than shoddy relexification: this is the real deal.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2016While I haven't read this, I do know it builds on the first one and the first language construction book is a great resource for writers wanting to make a constructed language (conlag). Though it is likely very technical, as the first was, and I know that puts some people off. It needs to be though, since language is a very technical and not-at-all simple thing. Also, the book came like new (or was it new...?) and so the shipping was great.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2019The advanced sequel to the Language Construction Kit provides some of the most in-depth information to the more technical aspects of conlanging. You can find tons of variation which could be applied to conlanging or just for learning about linguistics in a general way.
Some problems I have with it is that it reads as just a collection of notes without much flow leaving the reader feeling like they are looking through a dry notebook at times. The ebook shares a similar product with the LCK. Neither have an interactive table of contents which is a bit amateur these days but at least the author added page numbers this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for linguists and language enthusiasts
This book is a interesting journey into natural languages and conlangs. The reader can inform himself about the large ranges of formulating the world of thinking and perception of the human universe. It introduces in a lot of languages and explains, how the different speakers of the world use certain morphology which often is different from the European languages. It shows that Europe and America are not the navel of the world and the crown of creation. It is an amazing book, written with comprehensible sentences and many explanations. There are so many details about the different languages that the reader has enough stuff to think about the human ability to recognize his environment and form the different societies. You often must stop to understand what even "primitive" people can express with short affixes. They have possibilities to express in a way which the "white man" only can say with much explanations.
I am impressed by this wonderful book and can recommend it to linguists and language enthusiasts. This book is a "must" for elaborated conlangers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, but sometimes difficult subject matter.
Another fascinating breakdown of how the languages of the world work from Rosenfelder - nominally aimed at those designing their own languages for gaming or literary purposes (something that's in vogue at the moment - anyone for Dothraki?) but in fact a stripping down of the engines of languages from across the world into their component parts. Some interesting features that we English speakers, and those speaking French, German, Spanish or any combination of the above, take for granted. Some stuff is truly intimidating - the section on Caucasian languages, for instance, impressed on me two things: firstly, how radically different a solution these speakers found to English speakers to the question of information transmission; and second, that I will never even attempt to learn Adyghe. Rosenfelder writes with a clear, often jocular style, with complex concepts simplified as much as possible, and at least one 'Too much information' problem. (Read it, you'll know when you get there). Very good book indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars É um livro mais avançado
É um livro um pouco mais avançado. Acredito que todos os construtores de línguas devem tê-lo, mas devem ler primeiro o The Language Construction Kit. Além disso, contém uma ótima introdução aos sistemas de escrita logográficos, como o chinês.
