Ju 88 Aces of World War 2 (Aircraft of the Aces, 133) Paperback – January 22, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Initially designed as a fast medium bomber, the Junkers Ju 88 was also used as a Zerstörer heavy fighter by the Luftwaffe. It saw its combat debut over Poland in 1939, and heavy fighter variants saw action on every front up to VE Day. The ultimate Ju 88 fighter variant was the G-model of 1944, which boasted a FuG 220 or 227 radar, an astounding array of cannon and machine gun armament, and advanced Junkers Jumo or BMW engines.
A dedicated nightfighter, the first Ju 88G-1s entered service with the Nachtjagd in the summer of 1944, replacing Ju 88C/Rs as well as some Bf 110Gs. Despite suffering heavy losses in the final months of the war, Ju 88Gs also inflicted serious casualties on Bomber Command right up to VE Day.
Illustrated with original artwork, Ju 88 Aces of World War 2 tells the story of the aces who menaced Allied aircraft and shipping throughout the war, whether patrolling over the Bay of Biscay, to the Arctic circle opposing Allied convoys and, most successfully, as radar-equipped nightfighters engaging RAF heavy bombers during defense of the Reich operations from late 1941.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2019The highly versatile German Ju 88 saw service in the Second World War as a fast light bomber, a dive bomber, ground attack aircraft, night fighter, reconnaissance aircraft, and torpedo bomber. Its variants flew over every German theater of war. Its pilots compiled an impressive record of service; many would be rewarded with the Iron Cross. This is their story...
In this Osprey Aircraft of the Aces Series book, author Robert Forsyth covers the prewar development of the Ju 88 and its subsequent uses. The narrative provides an impressive amount of detail for its length, capturing vignettes of various pilots, their missions and their results. The book includes an impressive selection of period photographs and a nice selection of color plates of aircraft configurations. Highly recommended to students of WWII's air war.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2019The Junkers 88 served its masters well, carrying out bombing, intruder, nightfighter and recce tasks on all fronts. Noted Luftwaffe historian Robert Forsyth covers the exploits of the men who flew the Ju 88 in this interesting addition to the Osprey line. Included in that group are such notables as Werner Baumbach, Heinz Rokker, Gerhard Raht, Udo Cordes and Hajo Herrmann. The text is nicely illustrated with many b&w photographs and Jim Laurier's always-excellent profiles. Recommended.
One minor point: Based on the JU88 ACES title and its inclusion in the AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES series, I had assumed Foryth's book would cover FIGHTER aces only.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2019Very good details of the aircraft and its crews, from every aspect. No political statements, and no fowl language. Most excellent read!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2019A good amount of information on the fighter versions of this aircraft.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2019I JUST FINISHED READING THIS BOOK. AND WAS DISMAYED TO READ THE JU-88 HAD A (BOMB BAY). NOTHING I'VE EVER READ STATES THE JU-88 HAD A INTERNAL BOMB BAY. THE JU-88 HAD 4 BOMB RACKS UNDER THE WINGS NEAR THE GLAZED CABIN. I THINK THE AUTHOR NEEDS TO DO SOME MORE RESEARCH BEFORE WRITING ABOUT AIRCRAFT. I'VE FOUND NO MENTION IN MANY SOURCES THAT THE JU-88 HAD A BOMB BAY. SO WHAT ELSE MAY BE WRONG IN THE BOOK.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2019Great Addition to the Aircraft of the Aces Series !
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2021Second of the Osprey series I’ve read on the Ju-88 and the better of the two. A bit on the aircraft, but mostly about its use and the crews. The best part is the plethora of photos of the air in multiple theaters.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2022Excellent coverage considering the size of the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
For the first time, an Osprey book leaves me really disappointed.
The author is, as usual, very competent and knowledgeable just as in all his other works. However, the title tricks you into believing the books will cover nightfighter and long-range fighter units, subject that until now haven't been widely covered.
What you get are actually five small. 15-pages chapters who briefly summarize operational history in different theatres including bomber aces. What is the point in doing that, when there are already three separate books about Ju 88 units covering units who fought in Western, Eastern and Mediterranean fronts?
As a result, both chapters on night fighter and KG 40's long-range units are brief and lack any substantial information or new content.
On the plus side, the chapter about reconnaissance units manages to provide new information about units which have long been neglected.
