'Felix Francis' novels gallop along splendidly' Jilly Cooper
‘From winning post to top of the bestseller lists’ Sunday Times
It is said that everyone over a certain age can remember distinctly what they were doing when they heard that President Kennedy had been assassinated, or that Princess Diana had been killed in a Paris car crash, but I, for one, could recall all too clearly where I was standing when a policeman told me that my wife had been murdered.
Bill Russell is acting as a volunteer steward at Warwick races when he confronts his worst nightmare – the violent death of his much-loved wife. But worse is to come when he is accused of killing her and hounded mercilessly by the media. His life begins to unravel completely as he loses his job and his home. Even his best friends turn against him, believing him guilty of the heinous crime in spite of the lack of compelling evidence.
Bill sets out to clear his name but finds that proving one’s innocence is not easy – one has to find the true culprit, and Bill believes he knows who it is. But can he prove it before he becomes another victim of the murderer.
Guilty Not Guilty is a journey of greed and jealousy set against the grief of personal tragedy and loss, with many a twist and turn along the way.
Praise for Felix Francis's novels:
‘As usual with a Francis, once I opened the book, I didn’t want to put it down… Felix’s resolution is darker and more shocking than his father would ever have contemplated, but reflects grittier times and changing tastes in fiction. Now, what am I going to do for the next 12 months until the next one?’ Country Life
‘He has become his own man as a purveyor of murder mysteries' The Racing Post
'The Francis flair is clear for all to see' Daily Mail
'From winning post to top of the bestseller list, time after time' Sunday Times
'The master of suspense and intrigue' Country Life

- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2019Being a long time fan of Father and Son, I look forward all year to the new books coming out! This one is especially good. I read it in one sitting, will have to reread it to see the nuances. The plot moves along well, then seems to slow, but Do Not give up! The ending is at the end (of course, no fading quietly into the ending!) A little frustrating and makes the Title really have more meaning. I thoroughly enjoyed reading another book in the Francis Legacy! Keep the faith! I have reread several times all the books in order. Learned as always from these books, this time about the legal processes in the UK. One of my favorite things about these books is the lessons of life, and well as gaining practical knowledge that might come in handy at some time. If you enjoy reading and learning, get this book. Then go back and get them all to read!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2022Felix took on the mantle of writing mysteries with a racing theme as a co-author with his father Dick Francis as his father aged and continued writing them after his father passed away. Those novels were okay, not bad mysteries still with a horse racing theme.
With this novel, the story barely has any relationship to British horse racing, flat or steeple chasing. it is well written, well researched with a kicker ending. Felix is coming into his own style and has written a pretty good yarn. Give it a read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024Did not see the ending coming. Stirred up emotions and wrapped the reader in the criminal and judicial process. Interesting theme of mental health and it’s effect on the greater circle of family and friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2023Good writing, interesting storyline, but a number of obvious flaws detract from the book. A man is accused of murdering his wife and the police are portrayed as totally incompetent, arresting him for murder with no evidence whatsoever, and ignoring the evidence for another murderer. The protagonist is passive to a ridiculous degree and is portrayed as a weak character throughout the book. Circumstances demand sympathy, but it is hard to feel sorry for him. There is a major surprise at the end of the book which fits but is totally unexpected. I rate this book as a 6.5 out of 10.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2021This book, like his others, doesn't disappoint. I love the author's writing style, as I loved his father's. The originals were a family affair, as I understand, and Felix does a wonderful job of carrying on the family tradition. The writing style is suspenseful and gets the reader hooked and very involved in the characters, especially the protagonist. This one, like his others, is riveting and has a nice plot twist at the end, to boot! Another feature I like very much is that the protagonists in his stories are very decent people who come into some kind of serious trouble, and rise to meet the challenge. Please keep them coming, Mr. Francis!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2019Felix Francis tries to set up a moral dilemma in this book. Unfortunately, he argues the case too well, so when it comes down to the final question, this reader, at least, had not the slightest hesitation in coming down hard on one side.
Bill Russell is accused of murdering his mentally-disturbed wife by the wife's brother (who is also mentally disturbed). His life is threatened. A substantial sum of money is missing from his mother-in-law's funds.
This book reads like an attempt to break out of the tried-and-true Francis formula, with the grieving husband fighting the false accusations and, later, the effects of the murder attempt, by going into considerable detail on the legal processes involved. Other reviewers have mentioned they would have liked to have seen more about horses, although this isn't the first Francis book (by father as well as son) which uses racing as the thinnest frame for the story. I do wish there had been a bit more mystery in this mystery, though--it was obvious from the very beginning. The twist at the end was well done, but leaving the question open was kind of silly--again, at least to this reader.
I have been buying books by Dick Francis, and now by Felix Francis, since they first started publication, and I'm not going to stop now, but this one is not going to be one of my favorites.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2024arrived in timely fashion good condition
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2020A typically excellent Francis work. Fast paced, exciting and gripping from beginning to end. I would have liked more horses, the inclusion of horses an element of Dick Francis but not of Felix. It did have some connection with racing though including some discussion of how British horse racing has changed which was informative and interesting.
I liked the ending. Many of you will hate the ending, I usually hate this type of ending. But this one was so perfectly written that I found it quite satisfying.
In short another great mystery you won’t want to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Was a gift
Purchased for a friend, book was in excellent condition and shipped on time, actually it came early. Friend was very happy.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent twist at the end.
This was different from some of the earlier Felix Francis books, but still most enjoyable. The author seems to be really hitting his stride now and I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially the sting in the tail and the supervenient ending. Personally, I liked the cerebral nature of the plot, although one member of my family, with whom I discussed the book, lamented the lack of physical action. I await his next book with eagerness.

4.0 out of 5 stars The usual thrills...
Mr Francis delivers the usual thrills, however, there is too much court stuff, but a good twist to the tale.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not like Dick Francis
The book is slow burn. Felix should stop using Dick Francis name to associate his work to that of Dick.
Delis is far cry from Dick and this book is complete disappointment. I’ll be careful before I buy next Felix book
