Visual Fractions by Dr. Pi Squared
Learn what a fraction is
- See firsthand what a fraction is.
- Various shapes are divided into different colors.
- Figure out which fraction of each shape is each color.
- Simple example: In the circle above, 1/2 is blue, 1/4 is red, and 1/4 is yellow.
- Answer key is included. The answers are in reduced form. For example, 2/4 reduces to 1/2.
- Designed as a paperback with room to write the answers.
Pie slices
- Some exercises have pies divided into slices of various colors.
- Determine which fraction of each pie is which color.
- Two pages later in the book are dedicated to mixed numbers where the fraction is more than one pie (for example, two and three-fourths pies).
Smiley faces
- Some problems feature smiley faces, words, arrows, or numbers.
- In each set, there are objects of different colors.
- Determine which fraction of each set is which color.
- Simple example: For the group of smiley faces above, 1/2 are blue, 1/3 are yellow, and 1/6 are red.
- Note that 3/6 is equivalent to 1/2. Three out of the total six smiley faces are blue, and you can divide them into three groups such that one out of two is blue in each group.
Fraction pyramid
- Not all of the shapes are circles.
- Some of the shapes are triangles, squares, rectangles, or hexagons.
- Each shape is divided into pieces with different colors.
- Determine which fraction of each shape is which color.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2021My daughter is a visual learner. So, teaching math I usually use cutting pizza for fractions, baking a cake for measurements, etc. But math kinda sucks because it's not always easy to be visual. My daughter used to cry in math class because she had so much trouble understanding the concepts. She LOVES this workbook. Even my youngest has learned fractions by watching us work in this book. Visual math is such a great idea and my daughter doesn't cry over math anymore.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2013I bought this for my 1st grade son to get a head start on fractions. It was clearer and simpler to read than any of the others I looked at. I wanted something that didn't cover too much information, but gave lots of practice on the concept of breaking a whole into pieces.
I am so pleased with this book and my son enjoyed working through it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2014Great book for fractions, and particularly understanding reductions. More a practice book than for learning the original concept, but incredibly solid at what it does. We're using this for my 3rd grade son who is beginning fractions, and this really helped him leap from struggling to understanding.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2014my 5year old loves this book! it is wonderful, he has learnt how fractions can be written in different ways, he loved explaining how 3/9ths is the same as 1/3rd. I really great starting point for children
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2015at first I sought it's too primitive, but after using it for a few weeks I realized that it's actually very helpful and appropriate for kids - actually "VISUAL FRACTIONS"
