- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2023'm sometimes slow on the uptake with writers I'm unfamiliar with, choosing too often to stick to those I know, but I read Andrew Miller's PURE and liked it enough to buy this book, as the first download to my new "Christmas" Kindle. I have found a new writer I will follow and will read his other books as soon as possible. I love how evocative the time period is in this particular novel, the luxurious descriptions that put you right into the scene and into the interiors of the characters. I loved this novel, so much I didn't want it to end. I was holding my breath all the way through for the climatic scene, and it did not disappoint me. I would recommend this novel to anyone with a love for exquisite writing, the Napoleonic time period, and unforgettable characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2020This fine novel combines fantastic writing, intriguing historical details, and suspense. It's one of the few novels I've read where I had to turn to the last page out of concern for the characters. I love historical novels but I'm not informed enough on this era to know whether Andrew Miller got it right; for me that matters less than how plausible it is--how effective the details--and NWSBEF struck me as getting it just right. Hilary Mantel may be the only other writer who does it as well as Miller. It's a quick and pleasant read that will keep you turning the pages.
So why not five stars? One word: the ending. I love ambiguity, but that's quite a different monster than uncertainty, which is where the final paragraph--and thus the story--ends up. So be warned. You'll have many of the questions you've been asking all along answered, but then you'll finish by having a brand new question with no chance of ever getting its answer.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2024Aside from the wonderful story & characters, the writing is breathtakingly good. I paused several times to linger over a metaphor or a single chosen word.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2020Yes this is a fine read though some times meandering in the telling . The hunt through the western coast and isles of Scotland for an English captain to satisfy the "powers to be" in Spain for an atrocity committed, is sometimes tense and with a bit of mystery, while offering strong literary imagery. The ending was a bit wanting but in retrospect, a satisfying read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2019A very well written and an imaginative story of a military officer in the British army during the time of the Napoleonic wars. A one night episode leads to fearsome chase by a troubled, revengeful and limited minded corporal seeking to complete a politically motivated order--to hell if necessary. In fleeing, the officer abandons his estate, encounters hardships but--improbably--find love and freedom in overcoming many adversity. it is a novel about fates, destinies, change and persistence in willing new opportunities. The descriptions are often wonderful. But I think the tale is too long because of them and I wanted to finish the book much sooner than finally coming to the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2019A good historical novel conveys a glimpse of its period. An excellent one puts the reader in the characters’ shoes and allows you to experience the pain, the complexity, the dilemmas and the consequences. All in richly drawn scenes.
Such a book is this. Not a joyful read; indeed quite somber. But compelling and rich in the real stuff of life during hard times.
We follow an English cavalry officer home after a calamitous defeat and retreat. What follows is not a hoped for period of recovery, but a trek to restore a life. And how that journey affects the lives of people he encounters.
This book will remain in your mind long after the last page is turned. An exceptional read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2020This is a novel with a care for description and place written with deep attention to language. It lags from time to time in narrative, though the story comes together. It’s richly imaginative with attention to detail. Altogether a pleasure to be recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Non ho capito se c'è un lieto fine

5.0 out of 5 stars A book you would be foolish to miss
Andrew Miller is a remarkable writer and I have loved all his work. However, Now We Shall Be Entirely Free may well be my favourite - it is shockingly good. From its first sentence it grabs the reader's attention, and it never lets go - the narrative is a gripping, propulsive, thrilling ride. Not only that, the historical reenactment of the early 19th century, when Britain is enmeshed in war with Napoleon, feels so real that I felt I had time-travelled to the period. As characters traverse the length and breadth of the country, a Britain is evoked that seems entirely plausible and yet frighteningly strange. No one can travel incognito - there are few enough people in this chill shadowy world that our flawed hero, John Lacroix, finds it almost impossible to hide as he is pursued by a brutalised youthful killer and his sophisticated Spanish sidekick. A large cast of characters each make an impact, all being finely and sympathetically drawn. As the denouement loomed, my heart was in my mouth, and I stayed up late, very late, in order to finish a story I could not put down. This is a novel of bracing intensity, huge compassion, detailed research and capacious imagination. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A literary novel
A literary beautifully written story! I enjoyed every line, every word of this novel set in 1809 about a soldier, John Lacroix, who has become a deserter. He returns to England, home where he is restaured to health by Nell, his housekeeper. Peace and quiet are conveyed by Nell's calm , sure ministering of John betraying however John's inner turmoil over guilt and post trauma of war. The reader follows him on his way towards redemption, freedom in his mind, not knowing where it will lead him, whom he will meet. Up to the Scottish Islands John will travel. Not only his guilt follows him, but a real man, a soldier with an aim.... Only at the very end of the book do we know whether John has reached freedom, and if which one. Very well drawn characters, I never knew what would happen. Andrew Miller deserves to be better known for he really can write. Brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Outstanding Achievement from Andrew Miller
Andrew Miller's talent for immersive world-building, fully-rounded characterizations, profound emotional and philisophical meditations, combined with exciting plotting are all on display in this novel. As with Miller's Pure (also highly recommended), I was sorry (although satisfied) to reach the end. Do not miss this novel!

5.0 out of 5 stars (English edition) Superb novel.
A historical novel that's a real page-turner, even though it is slow in parts. But it is so beautifully written even the lengthy passages of descriptive prose are a joy to read. A plot that really captures the imagination and has the feel and atmosphere of the Western isles. Thoroughly recommended.
