Reference and Information Services: An Introduction (Library and Information Science Text) 5th Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
A user favorite through four previous editions, the fifth edition of this classic text remains an ideal resource for anyone seeking to master the latest nuances in reference and information services. Edited by reference authority Linda C. Smith and Melissa A. Wong, the single-volume work is presented in three parts. Part I focuses primarily on new ideas and methods for providing reference service. Part II shares information on how to evaluate and search on electronic sources and also examines the content, structure, and advantages of various types of print and electronic outlets. Part III explores the future of reference services.
The book has been updated throughout to reflect the impact of fast-changing technology and the resulting changes in user behavior. Discussion of virtual/digital reference is now integrated throughout the services chapters, and the book now includes separate chapters on consortia and cooperation; marketing and promotion of reference services; readers' advisory services; business, health, and legal sources; and primary and archival sources. In addition, you'll find more emphasis on responding to the needs of specific populations, including children and young adults.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2019Great for what I needed it for.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2017Excellent text book with great authors included, well organized and mind-expanding. I especially liked it's organization and bibliographies on every topic.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2018It's good for the novice information specialist, but if you've been working in such a setting, you'll find yourself at times saying things like, "well of course that's how the LIS works with the MARC, it's common sense!"
Otherwise I found it to be a good brush-up at the least.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2017Good.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2018This was essential for my class. But I wish it wasn't so expensive.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2020Excellent book, it breaks down what it takes to run a successful library in simple terms.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2018Too spensive, too much introduction in chapters, and way too long chapters for the core information they offer. I personally dont like this kind of books. Buy it for a master's degree class. But I'm sure that if you buy the earlier version, it's pretty much the same contents, and at a better price.
