About the authors
Jon Stewart is considered one of America's top social and comedic voices. Over the past 10 years, Stewart has redefined political satire in American culture from his perch atop the anchor chair on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." In fact, surveys have shown that the overwhelming majority of men and women under the age of 35 list "The Daily Show" as their primary source of television news.
As host of "The Daily Show," Stewart has interviewed such political luminaries as former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama, John McCain and John Edwards and such celebrity icons as Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and George Clooney.
To date, Stewart and "The Daily Show" have received 22 Emmy Award nominations and won 11. These include winning for "Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program" five times: 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and in 2006, as well as "Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series" in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Jon, himself, was nominated for "Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program" in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and again in 2008 as host of the 80th Annual Academy Awards, which he also hosted in 2006.
In 2001, "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" received the prestigious Peabody Award for excellence in its "Indecision 2000" campaign coverage and again in 2005 for "Indecision 2004." The show has also been honored by the Television Critics Association for "Outstanding Achievement in News and Information" in both 2003 and 2005; winning over traditional news shows in the category.
In 2005, Comedy Central reached a first-look deal with Stewart's Busboy Productions. "The Colbert Report," hosted by Daily Show alum Stephen Colbert, was the first project developed under this agreement and debuted on Comedy Central on October 17th, 2005. Now in its 3rd season, "The Colbert Report" has received 12 Emmy Award nominations. In 2007, the show was honored with a Peabody Award. Stewart is the co-creator and Executive Producer of the series.
Stewart has graced the cover of numerous magazines including Newsweek, Rolling Stone, New York Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, GQ, etc. He was also named "Entertainer of the Year" for 2004 by Entertainment Weekly and was honored as "New York Entertainer of the Year" by Variety. Stewart was also named to the inaugural Time 100 list of the world's most influential people (Time magazine). In 2001 and again in 2002, Stewart served as host of the Grammy Awards.
Stewart is also a best-selling author - In 2004, Warner Books published "AMERICA (THE BOOK): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction" and it immediately topped The New York Times Best Seller List, staying at #1 for 18 consecutive weeks, ending the year as a top 15 best-seller. It was also ranked #1 on the best-seller lists in The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today and San Francisco Chronicle. Additionally, "America" was given the prestigious book of the year award in 2004 by Publishers Weekly. In addition to this, at the 2005 Grammy awards, both Jon and the Cast of "The Daily Show" were honored with Best Comedy Album, for "AMERICA (THE BOOK): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction."
Stewart, his wife and two children reside in the New York Metropolitan area.

Even Better Than The Book

- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2004This delicious book is even funnier than I had imagined. It's as big as my fifth grade geography book and a lot more interesting. Laid out like a textbook, the book is divided into chapters on democracy before America, the founding fathers, the presidency, congress, the judiciary, campaigns and elections, the media, the future of democracy and, lastly, the rest of the world. Each chapter has text, illustrations, multiple choice questions, discussions questions and classroom classroom activities.
There are funny nuggets everywhere. ". . .if Betsy Ross were alive and sewing American flags today, she'd be a 13-year-old Laotian boy." There is also The Game of the Presidency" laid out like a monopoly board. And we learn how to break down a $2,000-a-plate fundraiser. My favorite chapter is the one on the media, captioned "Democracy's Valiant Vulgarians." Mr. Stewart and Company hang them all out to dry. "Were You Aware? Barbara Walters is not even trying. She is estimated to have given up in 1983." In the chapter on the future of democracy, "Four Score and Seven Years from Now," will you be aware that "The Social Security Administration granted retirees a monthly check, instead of just a coupon good for a free side salad at Denny's?" Finally, you won't want to miss the spread of the Supreme Court [they're the ones who handpicked the current occupant of the White White by a five to four vote along party lines] totally naked. We are to "restore" their dignity by cutting out their robes and covering their nakedness a la the cutouts. When you turn the page, the first nudie you see if Justice Scalia. I laughed out loud!
There are literally dozens of hilarious drawings, photographs, quotations, riddles, fold-outs, etc. here to help get you through this election season. Enjoy! Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2004Jon Stewart and The Daily Show Team score big in this satrical text-book. "Democracy Inaction" teaches as well as misleads; gives hope and also takes it away. It is The Matrix in book form. Some of the facts are true, some are half-truths, some are outright lies, and the fact that the average reader cannot always tell the difference makes the book's point very clear. The government is run by a people who don't know what the government is or how it works. It's sad, but it's presented with such sharp wit that you take the medicine willingly.
For example, we learn that the president, no matter how much he wants to, cannot 'make' laws, unless of course he calls it a police action. We also learn that "Did you know" is copyrighted by a competing publishing company, so our little sidenotes always begin with "Were You Aware?". There is a also a lovely map that shows (in the familiar boardgame fashion) how to become President, and how to stay President once you are there. Samatha Bee pops in now and again with some information on Canadian government always apologizing for cutting in. The other correspondants have strong opinions as well, and I'm sure they are going to run themselves, just as soon as they can figure out how to take that practice podium home.
This is a very funny book, and a light read that could be made deeper if you want to take its more serious issues to heart. And even though Walmart won't sell it, I still recommend that you buy it. Freedom of speech and all that jazz;)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2004It happens so rarely that I laugh out loud when reading a book (or any other form of printed work). This book has had me laughing out loud SEVERAL times!
For those of you that *hate* The Daily Show, don't be dismayed, this book might still be for you.
You see, there is a lot more to this book than the naked pictures of the Supreme Court (those are basically disturbing, not funny). The humor in this book takes real intelligence to understand. If you don't know who Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Machiavelli, or Marx, etc etc is, then you will *NOT* find this book funny.
I must give the writers credit, for it is one thing to come up with fart jokes and potty humor. However, in America, they have shown the ability to research a subject and change a certain underlying fact or two to really bring out some satire. If you don't know your history or classic authors, you'd probably find this book dull and boring (having missed all the references).
To put this book over the top, it is ENTIRELY like a TEXTBOOK! Seriously...form the silly "FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW" balloons, to the silly illustrations and pretend learning games. The authors really put in the effort to make this a (non-partisan, mind you) brilliant satire on America's political system and the methods we use to teach our own history!
So, even if you hate The Daily Show, if you enjoy intelligent satire this book may just be for you.
Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The daily show in Bildern
Schnelle Lieferung,
Kaufempfehlung

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and useful
Not being American, I did not knew about several intricacies of America's political and legal structure.
It's silly and entertaining, quite politically balanced (even if Jon Stewart has been identified as a member of a cultural elite close to Democrats), still it teaches you a lot about America.
