Review
—Daniel L. Akin, president, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
“The cooperative partnership of Southern Baptists may not be perfect but it is proven and profound. In Together on God’s Mission, Scott Hildreth provides a timely resource that not only advocates for the financial wisdom of the Southern Baptists’ Cooperative Program but also advances the theological foundation of this cooperative partnership for a new generation. As an experienced missionary and seminary professor, Hildreth provides a concise and helpful orientation of how churches unite to form a mighty Great Commission coalition as they join together on God’s mission.”
—Brian Autry, executive director, SBC of Virginia
“From their earliest days, Baptist churches have cooperated together for the sake of kingdom priorities such as missions, education, and public engagement. As Southern Baptists, we cooperate through our structures and strategy, which are linked together in the Cooperative Program. Every generation brings new challenges and fresh opportunities, and as this happens, pastors and other leaders need to be reminded anew of the importance of gospel-centered cooperation among churches of ‘like faith and order’ (as old-fashioned Baptists used to say). To that end, Scott Hildreth has written a book for such a time as this. Together on God’s Mission gives us the perfect combination of Baptist history, sound biblical exegesis, missional theology, and constructive application.”
—Nathan A. Finn, dean, School of Theology and Missions, and professor of Christian thought and tradition, Union University
“Scott Hildreth has done Southern Baptists a great service by providing this book. Of particular help, in my mind, is his commitment to help the SBC ground their partnership in theology rather than pragmatics. If you are Southern Baptist and care about cooperative mission, you should read this book.”
—Micah Fries, senior pastor, Brainerd Baptist Church, Chattanooga, TN
“The perfect primer for getting your mind around the Cooperative Program—its unique opportunities, current challenges and the way forward. Dr. Hildreth brings to this book an understanding that comes from years of working ‘inside’ the system and the passion from having depended on the Cooperative Program while he served on the front lines of global missions.”
—J.D. Greear, pastor, The Summit Church, Raleigh-Durham, NC
“In this informative book, Scott Hildreth shares from the rich knowledge he has gained as an IMB missionary and a professor of missions at a Southern Baptist seminary. With a succinct overview of how the Southern Baptist Convention came into being and grew to become the strongest Protestant missionary force in existence, Hildreth champions the benefit of a missions funding system that Southern Baptists know as the Cooperative Program. Together on God’s Mission explains why cooperation and personal involvement in missions is the heartbeat of who Southern Baptists have been and still remain. Hildreth’s work also reveals how those who hold to Baptist distinctives along with their personal convictions can work together in fulfilling the Great Commission. He reminds us that we can function most effectively in reaching the nations when we seek unity under our common statement of faith and around our common cooperative vision. Readers will benefit greatly from Hildreth’s book, whether or not they grew up in a Southern Baptist church.”
—Milton A. Hollifield Jr., executive director-treasurer, Baptist State Convention of North Carolina
“In the backward horizon of the Southern Baptist Convention, we can see dark clouds of human sin, but we can also see the lightning of God’s grace. In Together on God's Mission, Scott Hildreth shows us how to spot such grace, and how to respond with gratitude. The book will help a new generation of Baptist Christians learn from our past in order to forge a future of cooperation for mission.”
—Russell Moore, president, The Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention
“In Together on God’s Mission, Scott Hildreth demonstrates that our convention priorities and our Cooperative Program are not only practical, they are biblical. This book tells the story of the development of Southern Baptist cooperation and shows how our structure and vision fits within God’s global mission. It is well researched and accessible. I commend this book as a valuable tool for students, missionaries, pastors, as well as the masses of Southern Baptists across our convention who are called to share in God’s mission of making disciples of all nations.”
—Ed Stetzer, Billy Graham Professor of Church, Mission, and Evangelism, and executive director of The Billy Graham Center for Evangelism, Wheaton College.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2024I purchased to use along the Pathwright course, that uses this book, which is free to SBC Churches. This is an excellent resource to help Southern Baptist understand both the mission of God and how we work together in that.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2018"Together On God's Mission" is a short and yet very informative guide on how Southern Baptists have cooperated in the past and present on world missions to bring the saving message of Jesus Christ to the world. As a Southern Baptist, I was interested in the title. A short read, the book is around 80 pages and covers topics such as:
- How the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) resulted on the split over slavery between northern and southern Baptists.
- How the SBC has worked on healing the racial divide.
- Past examples of cooperative campaigns for reaching the world.
- Biblical examples of God using people to share His message.
- How the SBC can cooperate now and in the future on world missions.
Will be a good future reference on understanding how SBC churches have the great potential to become an even more viable missionary force. I was given a review copy by B&H Academic in exchange for a fair review.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2018A practical and theological apologetic for the SBC's cooperative program. Basically illustrates the point that, while the SBC is a denomination in the sense of having certain common doctrinal standards, the true underlying purpose for the SBC is a program that organizes money for diverse churches into purposeful ends, especially church planting and missions, all over the world.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2020I read this for a seminary class. A great defense of the pragmatic, traditional, and theological reasoning behind Southern Baptist cooperative efforts in missions. I greatly appreciate Dr. hildreth’s wisdom and insight. (Review by Jenn’s husband.)
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019Short and quick to explain the purpose of the CP. Very helpful, especially since I had very little understanding about the SBC/CP.
We're on ONE mission!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2018Thanks to D. Scott Hildreth and his new book, Together On God’s Mission, I have learned a ton in the last few days about the SBC, how it works, and why it is set up the way it is. Of course I had picked up over the years on the IMB, NAMB, ERLC, etc. and knew quite a bit about them. I even knew that the Cooperative Program was an umbrella program to fund all of these SBC endeavors, but I didn’t know how it all fit together with the annual meeting, the Executive Committee, the state conventions, and the like. For that reason alone, this book is a tremendous resource for pretty much every Southern Baptist and even non-SBCers who have wondered how the SBC is different from other Christian denominations.
D. Scott Hildreth is assistant professor of global studies and director of the Center for Great Commission Studies at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. He wrote this resource as part of his dissertation, but it doesn’t read that way. It is part straightforward explainer of the Southern Baptist Convention as an organization, part biblical study of the importance of the cooperation among local churches that the SBC provides, and part a historical essay on the importance of the Great Commission in the mission of the SBC since its inception. It is a very quick read (the main text is only 84 pages!) and it provides study questions for easy use in group contexts.
There were two aspects of this book that I found particularly powerful. First: Much has been said and written in SBC circles about the founding of the SBC out of the issue of slavery, and (as I have written about before) for good reason. It is an issue that we have not fully reckoned with as a denomination. However, Hildreth makes the case that solely focusing on the slavery issue when speaking of the Convention’s 1845 inception is a mistake. We can keep that issue fully in view and also recognize the fact that the Southern Baptist Convention was founded for the purpose of cooperating with other churches in making disciples both domestically and internationally. That is just as important to the heritage of the Convention, and one reason I thought the SBC could change its name to the Cooperative Baptist Convention until a simple web search turned up the similarly-named Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
Another aspect of Together On God’s Mission I would like to highlight is Hildreth’s focus on the ministries supported by the Cooperative Program on both the state and SBC levels. While I have heard of and new quite a bit about almost all of the SBC-level programs, I feel that most laypeople do not know about quite a few of the Cooperative Program ministries that they support. This book will provide that background knowledge and instill a sense of pride in others as it did me. I was especially excited to hear this bit of information about Baptist’s cooperation in disaster relief: Through the various disaster relief ministries of state conventions, Southern Baptists make up the second largest disaster relief agency in the world, second only to the Red Cross.
That’s amazing. Hildreth provides ample evidence from the Bible and from history that cooperation of local churches is not only necessary but a good and beautiful thing in the eyes of God, and he does not shy away from hard questions or common criticisms. I highly recommend this new book to Southern Baptists and even other Christians everywhere.
I received a review copy of this book courtesy of B&H Books and Lifeway, but my opinions are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2018I have never had the opportunity to read much on the Southern Baptist Convention, so this book was a first for me. This book presents the history of the convention and a proposal to continue and grow the cooperation in the convention today.
For me, I felt that this book was informative, but that was about it. It really did nothing to challenge me as a believer. It is a good resource to be sure, but I was kind of disappointed in the application portion of the book. 3 stars out of 5.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for a review.
