You Can Change: God's Transforming Power for Our Sinful Behavior and Negative Emotions Paperback – March 4, 2010
Purchase options and add-ons
It's about heart change, not behavior change. That's the conviction of Tim Chester as he seeks to help everyday Christians "connect the truth about God with our Monday-morning struggles." This interactive book, laid out in workbook fashion, is for newer Christians struggling with sin and for more mature Christians who have plateaued in their faith as they seek to find victory over sin in their lives.
With a conviction that sanctification is God's work and the journey to holiness is joyful, Chester guides readers through a "change project"-beginning with the selection of one area of life they would like to modify. Each chapter includes a question (e.g., Why would you like to change? What truths do you need to turn to?) to guide readers as they deal with a specific sin or struggle, truths from God's word, and a reflection guide to help readers through their change project.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“We are called to be salt and light. Yet often the church fails to live differently. In our busy culture, we rarely spend time dealing with sinful areas of our lives; instead we try to sweep them under the carpet. Tim’s book is a biblical and practical challenge to the very root causes of ungodly patterns of behavior. Read it and allow God to change you!”
―Andy Frost, Director, Share Jesus International
“A wonderful book for those who are serious about personal change. For so many Christians the gulf between our aspirations and the reality of our daily Christian walk is very large. Here is very helpful material to help us bridge this gap and become the whole people God intended us to be.”
―Stephen Gaukroger, Senior Minister, Gold Hill Baptist Church
“A book about Christian growth that is neither quietistic nor moralistic is rare. A book that is truly practical is even rarer. Tim Chester’s new volume falls into both categories and therefore fills a gap.”
―Timothy Keller, Late Founding Pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, New York City; Cofounder, Redeemer City to City
“There are few books that are shockingly honest, carefully theological, and gloriously hopeful all at the same time. Tim Chester’s book You Can Change is all of these and more. He skillfully uses the deepest insights of the theology of the Word as a lens to help you understand yourself and the way of change and, in so doing, helps you to experience practically what you thought you already knew. The carefully crafted personal ‘reflection’ and ‘change project’ sections are worth the price of the book by themselves. It is wonderful to be reminded that you and I are not stuck, and it’s comforting to be guided by someone who knows well the road from where we are to where we need to be.”
―Paul David Tripp, author, New Morning Mercies: A Daily Gospel Devotional

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2024In pastoral counseling, I frequently meet with people who are "stuck" in the same patterns of sin. Chester's book is one that I will provide as homework for those struggles. It is one of the most convicting books on sinful behavior I have ever read. The reader is confronted with the beauty and glory of Christ and urged to consider why he or she would ever want to do anything that would mar that vision. However, the book is also one of the most practically encouraging I have ever read on the subject. This is not simply a book that points out what you are doing wrong. This is a book that flows with grace, leading one to repentance. Chester has provided the church and individuals with an immensely useful resource.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2024In his book "You Can Change", Tim Chester helps Christians to understand that change in the Christian life is not fundamentally focused on behavior modification but on heart transformation, and this heart change comes as we apply the truths of the gospel to our hearts. The God revealed to us in the gospel dismantles the idols of our hearts that fuel our sinful behaviors and emotions.
I found myself encouraged and helped as I read through this book. It helped me to apply the truths of the gospel more deeply to areas of struggle in my own life. It helped me to understand that the good news of Jesus Christ is not something that gets you into the kingdom, but then it's on you to change yourself; rather, change and growth in the Christian life comes by a constant and deeper application of the good news of Jesus Christ to our hearts. By uprooting the idols in our lives, God in His gospel, by the work of His Holy Spirit, replaces our false loves with a greater love for Christ, which fuels a new obedience to God. Just as justification is all of grace, so it is with our growth as well.
It is a book I can and will heartily recommend to members of my church!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2024I loved this book. The gospel is on display here! But not only that but this pastor shows you HOW to overcome sin and negative emotions not only that it is a requirement that we hopelessly toil after. On the contrary, because of Jesus and His work, because of his beautiful design for the church, we have great hope to truly change.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2011You Can Change - God's Transforming Power for Our Sinful Behavior and Negative Emotions, written by Tim Chester is, at its heart, a book about the sanctification of the believer. Specifically, dealing with our role in recognizing those areas of our lives that need change in order to keep us on a trajectory of becoming more Christlike.
The book is systematic in its approach and is helpful in identifying both the issues and obstacles we have with effecting change in our lives as well as encouragement to focus on the means by which genuine change comes about. Chester also points to the church as the institution where we will find both the encouragement and accountability to bring about the sanctifying change we all need and should be seeking. Finally, he provides a dose of realism with the declaration that change is both a daily and a lifetime undertaking, but not one that takes an eternity as we will be glorified in due course.
The book's 10 chapters each have a review and guide to assist in applying what has been taught by the author in the preceding pages. While I read it individually, I sense that this would be a very good book for small groups to read given their conduciveness to follow on discussion and accountability.
While I have no serious regrets at having spent the time reading this book, I still have to admit that it did not exactly "wow" me. I really wish that I could put my finger on exactly what it was that failed to ignite my delight, but I cannot. And, when I page through the book, I found that I had underlined a fair amount of the content, suggesting that as I read, it was providing matters of interest. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, while I would not discourage anyone from reading You Can Change, I also would not go out of my way to suggest that this be added to everyone's reading list.
As Simon Cowell was known to say on American Idol..."Sorry".

Chester like his other books brings home biblical truths with his clear and smooth writing. I have read most of his books and this is one among his best.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Can Change- excellent book
This book is in the genre of Christian Spiritual Growth. If you are a Christian looking to grow, this book is one book you NEED to read. Chester deals with the root of our problems: sin in our hearts. He goes from theoretical detail to practice detail on how to let the Holy Spirit change your heart. God has used this in my own life to help change my heart to desire Him over myself and my own desires. Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Can Change is an excellent book. Every Christian should read this book.
The book explains so well how God changes us into the likeness of Jesus as well as how we should live according to His will on a daily basis. It also presents the subject from both theological and practical view points. This is a highly recommended reading for every Christian.
