About the Author

Jill Esbaum is the award-winning author of several books for young readers. Some of her titles for National Geographic include Little Kids First Big Book of How, Cherry Blossoms Say Spring, and the Angry Birds Playground titles Dinosaurs, Rain Forest, and Animals. She is a frequent school visitor and conference speaker. Esbaum teaches writing for children at the University of Iowa Summer Writing Festival and the Whispering Woods Picture Book Workshop/Retreat. She lives on a farm near Davenport, Iowa.

    Jill Esbaum grew up in small-town Iowa. Her summers were spent creating comic strips, getting kittens to follow her home, and playing Barbie beauty pageant with the neighbor girls (which her Barbie never won, since she had the unfortunate habit of tripping and falling during the swimsuit competition or trying to pull off a talent for which she was clearly unprepared). One of her favorite possessions was the mini flashlight that illuminated post-bedtime, undercover reading marathons with Nancy Drew.

    She is a frequent school visitor and conference speaker. She teaches writing for children at the Whispering Woods Picture Book Writing Retreat and workshops around the country.     The National Geographic Little Kids books are favorites in our house. The Big Book of Dinosaurs and the World Atlas are already among our most read books, so I was excited to add this book to our collection. People often critique these books for not going into enough detail, however, I have found that they have the perfect amount of detail for little children. This book got my 3 year old boy and 6 year old girl thinking and asking questions about all sorts of people and inventions and places. They have asked to get books from the library about some of the people written about here; I even found myself learning new things. It's a nice change from the worlds of princesses and trucks that I find so many of their books are about these days. This book is full of real photos and maps, which quickly grabbed my children's attention. It covers athletes, artists, astronauts, civil rights activists, inventors, authors, and presidents, just to name a few.

    There are also an additional 33 mini profiles covering different people, but these are truly mini and just a small paragraph/photo. The mini profiles still got my children asking questions and wanting to know more, but they're nowhere near as detailed as the 4-page spreads for the people listed above.

    I highly recommend this book as a collection to any small child's library, as it teaches children that there's such a big world out there for them to read about and discover.

    A couple of things you need to know. One is that these are deep and dense books that will not age out of your kid's book shelf until they are a teenager. My son, however, is four. So, a lesson about famous people turned into a makeshift introduction into the topic of death. This may scare you, as it would have scared me, had I thought about it, it turns out this was an excellent context for this vital lesson. This is because it is a book celebrating people and the lives they lived. In this context, the length of a person's life becomes far less relevant compared to their achievements. In fact, the first segment is about King Tut, and after reading about this lavish golden decorative place, my son started to refer to it affectionately as, "King Tut when he died." So, yes you have now been warned, but we love all the books in this series, and each of them come packed with massive learning packed into the most dense yet unassuming format, with loads of bons facts and even activies you can stop and do. This series, Golden Books, and Dr Seuss are the MVPs of our kid's shelf.
