George vs. George: The Revolutionary War as Seen From Both Sides Paperback – Illustrated, January 9, 2007
Purchase options and add-ons
The narrative introduces anew the two enemies, both named George: George Washington, the man who freed the American colonies from the British, and George III, the British king who lost them. Two leaders on different sides of the Atlantic, yet with more in common than we sometimes acknowledge. We are lead through their story, and the story of their times, and see both sides of the arguments that divided the colonies from the Kingdom. Was King George a "Royal Brute" as American patriots claimed? Or was he, as others believed, "the father of the people?" Was George Washington a scurrilous traitor, as all the king's supporters claimed? Or should we remember and celebrate him as "the father of his country?" Who was right? History teaches us that there are two sides to every story.
Rosalyn Schanzer's book is an accessible account of one the most vital periods in American history. It is also a timeless lesson in seeing history from different points of view. The author spent two years researching books, paintings, cartoons, and descriptions of Revolutionary times. She uses art, text, and first-hand accounts to illustrate how history should never be reduced to simplistic conflicts between the "good guys" and the "bad guys." Her illustrations, and her engaging quote bubbles, bring the Revolution to life again, and allow the characters of the period to speak for themselves. Through its lively text, detailed illustrations, and fully authenticated quotes, George vs. George shines fresh light on both sides of the story of our country's formative years.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2019This is my favorite American Revolution book for kids. I got it for my 7 year old to read before our trip to D.C. This book has a perspective I have never seen in a kids history book. It has a British/King George point of view as compared to the American perspective.
There are snapshots of important battles, key points, and is full of information I found interesting or was new to me. For example, there are pages of what ranks and what uniforms looked like on both sides, which is super interesting because we've always seen the "red coat" uniform, but this book had various other ranks and what their uniforms looked like- and this is from both the British and American side.
My 7 year old will pick up this book on his own and go back to the illustrations that he likes. His favorites are the illustrations of British tax collectors getting tarred and feathered, and the Boston Massacre where one of the red coats is about to get hit in the head with a plank of wood. The illustrations are wonderfully detailed and I love the thought bubbles and quotes captured within the illustration.
I also have a 5 and 2 year old, and this is pretty much over their heads (even though the 5 year old is really interested in the pictures), so I would base on my kids' experience that the best age for this book is around 7 to 12.
I highly recommend and am thinking about getting a second copy since my kids are kind of rough on books.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2016This book is great! We are using it for our fourth grade homeschooling with our American Revolution unit. I am a judge a book by its cover girl and I was immediately drawn to this book! It gives an introduction to both George Washington and King George and then goes through several small chapters, 1. at first glance 2. a look at the life of King George and his countrymen, 3. a look at the life of George Washington and his countrymen, 4. how government worked in England 5. How government works in America, 6. The trouble with taxes, 7. The tempest over tea, 8. George versus George, 9. The shot heard round the world, 10. British forces, 11. Rebel forces, 12. A new nation, 13. The tides of war, 14. The final battle, 15. No kings for America 16. Whatever happened to King George the third 17. What did George Washington do next. Most of these little chapters are about 4 Pages long with half of each page being a picture so really easy for your child to read alone or for you to read out loud in little sections there is one section the tides of war that is several pages long without as much picture. The pictures are really bright and colorful and are fun to look at and my son enjoy those just as much as he enjoyed the reading of the actual book it gives a lot of information without being boring and kind of sums it up really well ! I would highly recommend this book for anyone talking about the American Revolution!!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2020My 7 yr. old son and I love reading US history books. This one has a ton of information on each page and reads more like a textbook than a children’s book, but it is pretty a enjoyable IF your kids already know enough about early American history to feel connected to the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2024I use this with my kiddos to teach cause and effect, point of view, chronological order, and compare and contrast. The pictures are fantastic, but it is a bit lengthy as to show both points of view. HIGHLY recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2018What an awesome book, I feel like this would supply even most adults with new information. I wanted a book to look at with my elementary age kids that highlighted our (American) revolutionary history while still showing the other side of the coin and I think this book does an excellent job of introducing the British point of view. My 4th grader has spent over an hour and a half with it these past few days, and I've been reading excerpts with my 2nd grader, but it's a bit too much for her to read on her own just yet. The illustrations are fabulous, it's fun for them to just look over the pictures and I'm fairly confident it will be a favorite for a long while

1.0 out of 5 stars Super Racist Book
This book is appalling and Amazon should remove the listing. It contains many racist references to Native Americans, glosses over slavery like it was just par for the course and does a pretty terrible job of representing this period of history. Made the mistake of giving it to my kid before pre-reading it, thought hey it’s written for kids by National Geographic, it should be fine. Nope. Awful. Returning it but seriously considered burning it instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I expected a book of a few hunderd pages for that price. This is not a book for adults. It is more like a comic book for children. If I had seen that it was like a thin comic book I would not have bought it. Number of pages, children's lierature, and illustrated like a comic should have been in its description. I think I wasted my money by buying it. For that price I could have bought two or three more worthwhile books about the same subject. I feel robbed. I was disappointed.
