This newly revised and updated guidebook introduces you to the wonders of Peru, from the high Andes peaks to the slow-moving Amazon waters. Be it learning about the four breeds of camels native to Peru or exploring the markets of Cuzco, you'll pick up the best suggestions for getting the most out of your trip. The guide begins with a detailed account of the country--what not to be missed, Peru today, food and drink, land and environment, history, and the arts--followed by nine regional chapters, including Lima, the Southern Lowlands and Southern Highlands, Cuzco and Machu Picchu, the North Coast via the Central Highlands, Huaraz & the High Andes, and ending with the Northern Highlands and the Amazon. A detailed Travelwise section tells you how to get there and how to get around, with author-picked hotels and restaurants. Special features include walking tours along the famous Inca trail to Machu Picchu and the Cordillera Huayhuash Circuit, as well as city strolls through Cuzco and Colonial Lima; experiencial sidebars that detail how to learn Quechua, volunteer in the highlands, visit native artisans, and stay with local families; and Insider Tips from National Geographic and local experts that point you to where the locals go. Aimed at active travelers who want authentic, enriching, cultural experiences and expert advice from a trustworthy source, National Geographic Travelers provide ways for people to experience a place rather than just visit, and give the true feel of each destination not easily found online.

Rob Rachowiecki was raised in London and climbed his first mountain by accident, while on a school biology field course in Scotland. After a day of dissecting newts, he walked to the top of a windswept hill behind the outdoor studies center, looked around at miles of startling wilderness and had an "I'm the King of the World!" revelation.

After crossing the pond in 1974, planning on traveling around the world, he ended up living and traveling throughout the Americas from Alaska to Argentina. He has authored hiking and climbing guides to Central America, the Central Andes, and Tucson, as well as travel guides to Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and the American Southwest for publishers ranging from Lonely Planet to National Geographic. He has been an active member of the Society of American Travel Writers since 1997.

From 1983 to 2008, Rob worked as an adventure travel guide, leading treks in the Andes and adventures on the Amazon. He has been based in Tucson since 1990 where he earned a Masters degree and where he enjoys the varied ethnic restaurants, theatres, and outdoor music festivals that this great city is home to, and which he describes in his app "Tucson & the Old Southwest" published by Sutro Media. He is often found hiking the many desert, canyon, and mountain trails surrounding Tucson, following the seasonal changes and usually doing a spot of bird watching, as Brits are wont to do.

Gave me a background on the places we were going to be on our trip to Peru (amazing country, BTW). It was so well organized, only had to read up on the areas we were going to. Had some history of the area for a background. We didn't need too much info about places to stay, eat, etc as we were with a guide and the trip was set up entirely customized to us but it was good to know some about where we were going and what to expect.

Well written, straight forward, useful information, and not a lot of fluff and filler

This seemed the best of the other books of the choices that I saw, but still had some challenges. I went to only two regions- Cusco/Machu Picchu and the Northern Coastal area. For Machu Picchu I needed to supplement with a book just for it and for the Northern Coast it had very little. I think that for someone planning a trip as a broad overview it would help with that, but as a book to get you around it wasn't as good (put perhaps still the best option). The photographs as is true of most of the NG series were great, which is why I gave it an additional star.

Helped me a lot; study it before going to the country.

I found this guide to Peru satisfactory and took it with me on my trip. I usually rely on several books rather than just one. But If you want to purchase only one then this one will do. It is often a matter of taste and prejudices when deciding which is the best.
