- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2024The National Geographic bird field guides are up there with the Sibley guides as my favorite. They provide a variety of different angles and views of the birds in the guide and are well laid out. Definitely worth the purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2024Very easy to read and find the bird you are looking for. Has easy to read tabs on the bird sections. Also purchased the Western Guide too. Would recommend it for bird watchers.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2020I just received my National Geographic Birds of Eastern North America and I am very happy with my purchase. I love the alphabetical list of birds on the cover flap where I can find a bird quickly. The illustrations in the book are very well done and the information about each bird is exactly what I was looking for. I did find that the color of the birds are a bit darker than what you may see in the wild. I am an illustrator and know that color separating and printing can sometimes make the art lighter or darker than the original illustration. I recommend this book highly for the "backyard birdwatcher" especially!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2021When I go Birding, I always take a few books with me. This is one of them. I use this book primarily for cross reference, but use my Sibley's or Peterson's for initial identification. I like the detail of these paintings for some purposes. I find Sibley's paintings a bit more muted and less detailed...but more like what I bird looks like in real life when you see it quickly. My biggest complaint is that it is difficult to compare the Sparrows and Warblers. I wish there was a plate showing several species together. One way I remedies this was to cut the sparrow page out of a Golden Guides and stick it in this book. If I go for a short jaunt and only want to take one book with me, I prefer the Peterson's or Sibley's.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2012I have used and own nearly every field guide (for birds) there is, for decades. This is the BEST. You can take it out in the field and identify what you are seeing. That's the point! There are some beautiful guides out there but when you get in the field with them you can't identify what you are seeing, for sure. With this one you can. The art is bright and crisp, and the text adds very helpful information for identifying your bird in question. The size is perfect. I own half a dozen copies, for house, for carrying, for in the vehicle, etc. This is also the field guide I give as gifts to friends and family who express interest on birds. BUY IT!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2023Got this guide as a more simple, elderly friendly guide for my grandparents. They have bird feeders and love to watch the birds but never know what they are. They said this was very easy to read and well organized compared to the more thorough (and much smaller writing) Audubon guide. Also it’s region specific so they only have the species they may actually see. They love it and I’m happy they’re excited to learn something new!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2023Very happy with this field guide. Carry it with me in the car. Worth the purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2022I bought this book for my husband who has become an avid birdwatcher. The books we had were for all of North America. This shows us the birds Of the East Coast and how they migrate. The book is full of information, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to identify local birds.

5.0 out of 5 stars You may only need one book, this one
There are bird silhouettes inside the covers to make ID fast and easy (if such a thing is possible). Details enough to ID the most localized bird, such as the Maritime Juvenile male woodpecker I saw. He matched no pictures, but by George, the word description of him was there in perfect detail.
But I cannot find a particular bird that is everywhere in Orlando, try as I might. Probably not this book's fault!! It is a most thorough book. Sometimes i think I have an ID but then realize that pictures of a bird only in an area far from me, and have got to start again. I have no idea how one can work around this. Again, not the book's fault. Favourite bird book so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new go to field guides!
I borrowed the guide to western birds from my local library all summer long. Now I have my own & the eastern guide too. Love these for their beautiful artwork, field marks & range maps. Nice price too.
