The arts and STEM education do not have to compete with each other. Instead, provide students with well-rounded instruction across all content areas to help develop critical thinking and analytical skills. This invaluable teacher’s resource, developed in conjunction with Lesley University, helps teachers gain a better understanding of why and how to use the arts to reach and engage students beyond traditional arts courses. Developed to help motivate disengaged students, Integrating the Arts helps bring the arts back into the classroom with strategies to use in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies instruction.
As a practical guide for implementation of arts-based activities, this book helps to meaningfully incorporate artistic expression –poetry, music/rhythm, storytelling, dramatic movement, and visual arts –throughout the curriculum. Students who struggle in STEM content areas can use these techniques to engage more successfully with the materials, and students who excel in STEM subjects can develop their artistic capabilities as well.
This resource includes activities, concrete examples, stories from teachers who are already implementing art-based curriculum, and assessment tools that help illustrate students’ comprehension of both arts processes and curricular content. Teachers will gain a clear understanding of the arts’ influence in making content-area instruction, particularly in STEM, meaningful and relevant for all students. This resource supports College and Career Readiness Standards.
About Shell Education
Rachelle Cracchiolo started the company with a friend and fellow teacher. Both were eager to share their ideas and passion for education with other classroom leaders. What began as a hobby, selling lesson plans to local stores, became a part-time job after a full day of teaching, and eventually blossomed into Teacher Created Materials. The story continued in 2004 with the launch of Shell Education and the introduction of professional resources and classroom application books designed to support Teacher Created Materials curriculum resources. Today, Teacher Created Materials and Shell Education are two of the most recognized names in educational publishing around the world.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2012This book has arrived at a time when teachers need it most. Schools across the country are currently focusing all their efforts on teaching to meet the new Common Core Standards. Integrating the Arts Across the Content Areas re-assures teachers that they can meet the standards and teach creatively at the same time, all the while addressing needs for differentiated instruction and thematic learning. Every classroom teacher should read this book cover to cover to find great solutions to meeting standards and also the needs of every child in their classroom. Focusing on how arts strategies can meet curricular needs, the book is divided logically into seven chapters, six of which focus on individual art forms (poetry, music, storytelling, theater, visual arts and movement)and adaptations for their use in the classroom. The seventh chapter addresses planning and assessment, key to the success of an integrated arts classroom. Each chapter includes sidebars with fabulous resources, ways to meet the standards and activities to prepare the teacher to teach in this "new" way.
If we are to teach our students 21st century skills, we can no longer teach to the test. By the time the test is taken, new knowledge and skills will be needed to succeed in our rapidly changing world. But by using arts strategies to teach in all content areas, we are also teaching focus, creative thinking, problem solving, and collaboration. Students learn how to make connections across areas of study, and new ways to show they know what they know. These are skills that our students will have to have in this century to survive. Donovan and Pascale have given teachers a highly readable, practical text for teachers who haven't given up on the art of teaching. I would go so far as to say that if the lessons of this book were employed in every classroom across the nation, we would see a dramatic increase in success among the students who usually fail, and an increase in productivity and creativity in all students.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2016This book is entirely to repetitive in its word placement. If it stayed with more ideas instead of notable quotes it would flow a lot smoother. To give an example, if you took a shot after every quote you would be finished with a bottle by the middle of the second chapter. If the author(S) could just stick to their ideas and not cram everyone else's in, you wouldn't feel overly tired after reading it, again great ideas poor execution.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2017I love this book. It provides great activities for integrating arts in the elementary curriculum. The Table of Content shows at the end Appendix A thru E from pages 197 - 210. However the book ends at page 200 and rest of the pages are simply missing. So I am not able to see the references on page 210. I already wrote all over the book now and I do not want to return it but disappointed.
