Based on the real life of the seventeenth century French dramatist of the same name, “Cyrano de Bergerac” is Edmond Rostand’s classic romantic play. Cyrano, a cadet in the French Army, is a talented duelist, poet, and musician, however he has extreme self-doubt in matters of love due to the large size of his nose. Cyrano is conflicted by his inability to summon the confidence to tell the woman that he adores, Roxane, how he truly feels. He writes her a letter expressing his love with the intent of giving it to her during a rendezvous, however, when he learns that Roxane is in love with another, a handsome new cadet, Christian de Neuvillette, he withholds his admission. Christian lacks the intellect and wit to woo Roxane and enlists the help of Cyrano who, despite being against his own self-interest, agrees. First performed in 1897, “Cyrano de Bergerac”, is one of the most popular plays in the French language, which brilliantly dramatizes the idea that beauty is only skin deep and that true love is about more than just physical attractiveness. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper, follows the translation of Gladys Thomas and Mary F. Guillemard, and includes an introduction by W. P. Trent.

Good read. The Movie Roxanne is based on via the play.

This is one of my favorite plays. There's humor, action, and romance. The banter and jokes always make me laugh. The character Cyrano has some fun wordplay -- being a dramatic, wordy, poet and fighter.

The story centers around Cyrano and his secret love for Roxanne. Despite his poetic nature, Cyrano has an abnormally large nose and believes he is unlovable. Cyrano helps another man, Christian, woo Roxanne. The story continues, but I wouldn't want to ruin it for a new reader.

I highly suggest this to anyone that enjoys a good romantic story. It's also a good read for anyone that likes 1800's-early 1900's literature.

Don't let my title scare you. It's seriously funny right to the end, it just has these moments where I cried a lot. it's such a great book that I'm grateful I tried. it was on a whim but I ended up finishing it in two days. it's a pretty easy read and even if the comedy doesn't cut it for you, I really recommend finishing it, just to enjoy the wonderful characters.

My copy was apparently too old and over-read for the high schooler to use for his English class. So now he has his own copy. Everyone should own a few copies of this one.

I've never seen this play live, but I love to read it. I find it funny that while I love the character of Cyrano, I'm glad I don't know him in real life, he can be a real dick. There's some great dialogue, some romance, and one of the best (if tragic) endings ever.

I've read this story so many times. My love for the character of Cyrano never dies. Between his quips, charm, and panache, the true humility of the character is always found in his love.

Texte jubilatoire, pour un amour puissant et délicat. Plein d'humour et de truculence. Une écriture dont on ne se lasse pas, des mots qu'on mâche, goûte et qui deviennent inoubliables...

I first encountered this play 40 years ago in a radio broadcast. It starred Ralph Richardson and (I think) Peggy Ashcroft, and I well remember the emotional impact of the closing scene. Rostand's play was magnificently translated by Fry: a theatrical classic.

Overall it's a pretty fantastic story, the incredibly written dialogue and the overall character of Cyrano being the real standouts here.
