About the author

I was born in a log cabin in Illinois and used to write by candlelight with a piece of chalk on a shovel. Oh, wait a minute. That was Abraham Lincoln.
Actually, I’m a children's book author. I’ve written more than 170 books for kids from kindergarten up to middle school.
For the little ones, I write picture books like "Rappy the Raptor," about a rapping raptor named Rappy, who raps.
For beginning readers, I write "My Weird School," about some kids who go to a school in which all the grownups are crazy. Thirty-one million copies have been sold. I also write “Wait! WHAT?” a series of biographies that focus on the unusual aspects of people like Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Muhammad Ali, and Teddy Roosevelt.
For middle-graders, I write the baseball card adventure series, about a boy who has the power to travel through time using a baseball card like a time machine. He goes on adventures with players like Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, and others.
For advanced readers, I write "The Genius Files," "Flashback Four,” “Houdini and Me” and others.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2024I follow the writer on Instagram & read his post about how this book came to be. Obviously, I had to get it. My 8 year-old daughter LOVES this read. I haven’t purchased a Dan Gutman book that has disappointed. He is hilarious and has a genius is way of getting all of us to be wacky.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2010Our family chooses a Christmas book to read out loud as a family in December. This was a great choice. The kids didn't want us to stop reading at night, even though we try to pace ourselves to end the book on Christmas Eve. The premise was very cute - a genie landing in a 5th grade class just before christmas vacation and granting the class only one wish. The kids choose to deliberate the merits of each others wishes and provide some great insights into why each wish is good or bad. This class is more educated in the area of global politics than most fifth grade classes. But, the language was right on target for my girls, ages 6, 10 & 13 - yes my 13 year old laughed along and set aside time to listen. The book was contemporary but the story a classic. Toward the end I was wondering how the book would wrap up. The author did a nice job and I would HIGHLY recommend this book for any family member.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2017I love this book. It is the second time I have read it to my classroom. I decided to purchase it for my son to read this holiday season and he thoroughly enjoyed it as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2009This was a great holiday gift for my son's 5th grade teachers and our library! I don't usually shop this early for Christmas, but I could not resist giving it to them early. Dan Gutman is ever popular and the illustrations by Dan Santat throughout the book are way cool! It's a quick read and a clever story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2013My son, a fourth grader, loves this author. He wants to read everything he has written. This one is not as good as his series books, but it is written in the same fashion that even adults enjoy reading this.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2013This book was one of Dans best books by far I could not stop reading it because it never was not exciting. So I advise if you want read this book make sure you'll be able to do it in on sitting.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2013My grandson loved and read all the Dan Gutman sports historical fiction books, so I was delighted to find a Christmas book by the same author. Good choice for someone who is a preteen past the children's books stage.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2014This book was very descriptive, creative, and funny. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. I honestly couldn't put the book down.
