Purchase options and add-ons
AND IT TOOK A SUPER VILLAIN TO TAKE IT BACK.
When the extradimensional evildoers called the Crime Syndicate invaded our world, they took down the heroes of the Justice League in seconds. Only an alliance of criminals — led by Lex Luthor — turned the tide and freed the planet from their iron grip.
Now Luthor is being hailed as a hero. His crimes have been forgiven. And the secrets of the super heroes are his to exploit…
When Luthor demands a place on the Justice League as his reward, Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman have no choice but to allow it. This way, they can keep their greatest enemy under close watch and harness his incredible genius against the even greater threat on its way.
Yet, Luthor claims he’s truly a changed man, ready to use his gifts to help the heroes, not destroy them. Truth? Lies? Either way, the Justice League will never be the same…

About the author

Geoff Johns is an award-winning and New York Times bestselling writer, film and television producer, showrunner, and entrepreneur known for re-imagining superheroes and other iconic mythologies, past and present. Johns is best known for his work on properties such as Green Lantern, Aquaman, The Flash, Superman, Batman, Justice Society of America, and most recently, the creator-owned hit series Geiger, currently being adapted for television at Paramount.
Since the beginning of his creative career, Johns' hallmark has been writing heroic and inclusive characters, including teenage hero Courtney Whitmore aka Stargirl, inspired by his real-life late sister; the Shazam Family, which he re-imagined into a diverse modern family of today; and the first Arab-American Green Lantern, Simon Baz, as well as the explosive multi-colored Lantern mythology that defined his decade-long bestselling Green Lantern run, among many, many others.
Johns’ most recognized work in television is the critically acclaimed Stargirl series which he created and ran. Some of his film credits include Wonder Woman (executive producer), Wonder Woman 1984 (also co-writer), Aquaman (also story) and Shazam! (executive producer), based on his graphic novel with longtime collaborator and modern legendary artist Gary Frank.
In 2023, Johns co-founded Ghost Machine, the first-of-its-kind creator-owned company. This groundbreaking collective includes some of the industry’s most legendary writers and artists, disrupting the old industry model by giving ownership to its creators, and paving the way for them to retain creative control and financial participation.
Born in Detroit to a Lebanese father, Johns was honored with his own permanent section at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2018I really hate how DC breaks up their JL Volumes. Make sure you read "Forever Evil" first as there is a huge gap between this volume and volume 5.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2015The Justice League title has largely been strong in the New 52, both revitalizing and maintaining the popularity of its members. This book signals a new chapter for the League, as three new characters are introduced into the ranks alongside Superman,Wonder Woman, and the rest.
As is usually the first noticed quality of any comic book, the art is integral to this collection. While the Justice League title has often been home to greats Lee, Reis, and D'Anda, some of the chapters felt week to me. I felt as if I was reading a mediocre-sandwich: good bookends, but a lousy middle. Reis and Mahnke deliver well, with each playing to their strengths, however I somehow felt both artists were not living up to some of their previous work. This was hard for me to state, as Reis is one of my favorites. I have no doubt that he was busy with several projects at the time, but come on, Justice League is a title that deserves top-notch stuff. The art preceding the Amazo arc is just terrible; plain, dull, and inconsistent best fit the style. If you've read any other review for this collection, you've no doubt heard (or seen) how spectacular Jason Fabok's art is in Justice League. Let me reassure you, he certainly is. Now, it's not quite perfect, but he is still learning about these characters and will no doubt improve over time. The Amazo arc is certainly the strong point of this book, and probably is why that particular image was selected for the cover.
The writing is still good, although I felt a major slow-done compared to the previous arc in Forever Evil. While it can be expected that there will be a bit of a lull between major events, some of the pages were trudged through, with only mildly interesting conflict in the Doom Patrol, and a rather ho-hum origin of the new Power Ring. Part of the challenging nature of the Justice League title is giving focus to each existing character, while also trying to create new and interesting plot. Johns was more than able to shine the light on dozens of characters in Blackest Night. However he not only failed to flesh out some of the new players, but also neglected some key League members. The saving grace, in addition to the Amazo Visrus, was Johns' writing of Lex Luther. He really nailed this character and made him an even more interesting read.
Over all, this book is well worth the purchase, but it does not quite deliver the same power and action previous Justice League stories have. Sometimes change is good, other times it is best remembered as that one villain that never showed up again.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2015This was a great follow-up to Forever Evil. Justice League vol 5 was more of a companion piece to the Forever Evil story, so if you were only reading JL, you'd be really confused why ***SPOILERS*** Ole Lexy-Poo is a now a member of the League. This story has some great moments with Supes, Bats and Luthor, You get to see inside Luthor's head a lot here, he's not quite as awesome as Sinestro, but was damn close. And I loved the tension between him and Batman. There are two arcs in this story, I am glad DC collected both here because Lex is centered in both. And, as teased in the end of Forever Evil...we all know what is coming in the next volume. It sucks having to wait for Vol 7 to come out next March.... but hopfeully it will be worth the wait. I've really enjoyed Johns GL and JL runs... He's off Lantern, so I hope he sticks with JL for a good long while. Oh yeah, that reminds me, the last page we finally see the REAL green lantern, Hal return. (I stoped reading GL after Johns left) I'm not reading the floppies, so I have no idea if he sticks around for DarkSeid war...but I sure hope so.
It will be interesting to see the relationship between Bruce and Lex after all of this! Hopefully they do something cool with it, and don't just ignore or pretend it never happened.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2018Standard Geoff Johns fare. The storytelling pulls you in, makes you invested in the characters, and before you know it you consume an entire story as easy as drinking a cup of water. You don't have to know 75 years of history to appreciate the story, but his stories will make you appreciate 75 years of history.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2019This volume continues the story set out in Forever Evil, where the villains of the world, and in particular Lex Luthor, helped defeat the invading Crime Syndicate. The book has a great first half, teeing up the tension between Lex, who decides he can and should be part of the Justice League, and Batman and Superman who are adamantly opposed to letting Lex into their ranks. There are some great moments and scenes between the three characters, and a lot of interesting internal monologues from Lex, letting the reader more into his self-aggrandizing, but calculated, thought processes. The second half of the book though, goes a bit off the rails, with an outbreak of the Amazo virus. As sometimes happens with Johns' stories, the action escalates up to 11, and there are a few too many action beats that aren't given time to breathe or have an impact before several others follow, resulting in a large cacophony that reduces the power of any one plot development. It all turns into a lot of noise at that point before ending abruptly. This is a nice bridge between Forever Evil and the final Darkseid War event, but it ultimately could have used less action and more development of the uneasy Lex-Justice League alliance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's talk about Lex
One of the best Justice League books to date. Full of tension and action this book brilliantly explores the fledgling alliance between Lex and the JL. This does really well to ramp up the excitement after the explosive Crime Syndicate storyline.
Great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Contia muito bom
