John Eldredge is an author (you probably figured that out), a counselor, and a teacher. He is also president of Ransomed Heart, a ministry devoted to helping people discover the heart of God, recover their own hearts in God's love, and learn to live in God's Kingdom. John grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles (which he hated), and spent his boyhood summers on his grandfather’s cattle ranch in eastern Oregon (which he loved). John met his wife, Stasi, in high school (in drama class). But their romance did not begin until they each came to faith in Christ, after high school. John earned his undergraduate degree in Theater at Cal Poly, and directed a theater company in Los Angeles for several years before moving to Colorado with Focus on the Family, where he taught at the Focus on the Family Institute.

John earned his master’s degree in Counseling from Colorado Christian University, under the direction of Larry Crabb and Dan Allender. He worked as a counselor in private practice before launching Ransomed Heart in 2000. John and Stasi live in Colorado Springs with their three sons (Samuel, Blaine, and Luke), their golden retriever (Oban), and two horses (Whistle and Kokolo). While all of this is factually true, it somehow misses describing an actual person. He loves the outdoors passionately, and all beauty, Shakespeare, bow hunting, a good cigar, anything having to do with adventure, poetry, March Madness, working in the shop, fly fishing, classic rock, the Tetons, fish tacos, George MacDonald, green tea, buffalo steaks, dark chocolate, wild and open places, horses running, and too much more to name. He also uses the expression “far out” way too much.

    A friend of mine aware of a character I'm developing for a fiction book I'm writing recommended I read this book as research based on the struggles my character is facing in his walk with the Lord. Excited by the recommendation, I downloaded and began to read John's book. First let me say it is very well written. It's a deep but smooth read...meaning there is much to learn yet it flows like poetry.

    I began reading with a researcher 's mind but somewhere along the way two other train of thoughts developed. First, as a single woman an ache for meeting the kind of man who is Fathered by God began to burn. What an incredible and worthwhile man that would be to have in my life and what a different world we would live in if all men embarked on the masculine journey described in this book.

    But perhaps more troubling was realizing just how much of this journey I myself have completed and how confused that is in fact making me. I have turned the confusion to God to clarify. I have pursued more masculine paths all my life and done so alone. It caused much pain that was only healed over the last three years when I began a committed walk with the Lord. While alone in the physical realm, He showed me how He has been right there the whole time and He is more then enough. He is all I need. The pain is gone but not the confusion. I find myself leading men and many young men have asked for my mentoring. While I am grateful...I wonder if I'm best suited for this role and still pray to encounter my own King.

    Before you buy this book, there are two things you should know. First, it was written for men, and for men alone. Generally, there could be a similar book for women, but this one isn't. Second, the book is largely a reproduction of material from "The Way of the Wild Heart."

    Having said this, this is an excellent book. Eldredge describes the stages of a man's journey through life - from the beloved son and the cowboy through various other stages to the sage. He describes what these stages ideally look like, what they are meant to be, but he also explains the wounds that ordinary men like you and me suffer during those periods. It is his perspective on life and manhood (a perspective you don't come across very often in church) that helps you reflect on your own life.

    Eldredge's book is easy to read and very encouraging. Well worth reading.
