Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Actor and playwright Smith casts her reflections on the creative process, the artist's life and the acting profession as a series of brief letters addressed to a fictitious teenager. Defining artist broadly, Smith (Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992) shares advice not only from painters, dancers, writers and actors but from a bull rider, a boxer and a dentist. Her advice is often directly practical: how to deal with stage fright, face an audition, even keep well ("Stay hydrated"). Smith treats concerns of the spirit as well: how to cope with disappointment, depression and feeling alienated. The letters have the immediacy of a genuine correspondence, replying to an imagined request for information ("How did you find your mentors?"), remembering a special moment ("It was summer the first time I moved to New York") and reporting on the present ("I just got a call from my agent saying there's a job for me on a television show"). What emerges most persuasively is Smith's sense of the complex interrelationship between one's art and one's everyday life. With a pithiness that wards away the preachy, Smith succeeds in conveying the pain, the joy and the effort that characterize a life on the stage and in the world. (Feb. 7)

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School-From a role on the popular TV show The West Wing to a MacArthur Foundation Award, Smith has attained success as an actress, a playwright, and a director. Her letters are filled with anecdotes and stories about her own successes and failures, giving the book an accessible, conversational feel. While the author primarily focuses on the joys of an artistic life, she also points out how much hard work, persistence, and even luck are necessary to succeed. She gives especially tender advice for those times when progress seems slow or when the review is bad. The book reads breezily front to back but is also divided into categories so it can be easily used as a reference when needing inspiration in specific areas. The one glaring omission is the almost complete lack of attention to promoting one's work. But this is a small complaint for what is otherwise a witty and inspiring guidebook for anyone interested in pursuing an artistic life.-Matthew L. Moffett, Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale

If you’re a (young) artist, actor, playwright, musician, PERSON- you have to read this book. It was required reading for me at school but it came to me at a time I felt I needed it most. Anna Deavere Smith is witty, personable and when reading her words, it’s on the same comfortably as an old friend. Required or not, I couldn’t put this book down and find its lessons ones I come back to.

If there is a young person in your life who is leaning toward a life in the arts, no matter the art form, this is a book for him or her. The author writes in clear, unambiguous prose about her insights into a life on the stage, around the stage, and around a multitude of artists. She draws on the wisdom of living legends she has encountered and weaves it alongside stories of her own friendships based in creativity. She challenges budding artists to examine their own motives and prepare for a life in pursuit of passion. Having seen the author speak and perform live, I can say her book is just as honest and almost as thought-provoking. Enjoy her journey.

Wonderful book to read if you are a creative person trying to make it in this world ... more a boost in things you may already know, but good to get 'outside' help every now and then!

I first read this book over a decade ago, as a middle-aged adult engaged in an attempt to live a more genuine, creative life (to use a couple of overworked terms). My own journey has had its ups and downs and still continues...and I find myself coming back to this book for inspiration and comfort from time to time. Although directed at young artists, I find it full of wisdom and compassion...valuable for just about anyone at just about any age.

I didnt realize that the writer is very young. I thought it was information from artists from the past.
Im in my 80's, have been painting since I was a child, and showing my work professionaly at galleries.
I think this is for young artists.

After reading the book, I ordered five more to give to new, up and coming artists... especially young actors. But the surprise of the book is how inspiring it is for anyone about to take on any stressful undertaking. It's kind of life-changing. Really really great.

I have the paper book version of this book and came on Amazon to buy the Kindle version. Disappointed that there isn't one! I LOVE this book. It is so well written and full of great advice for everyone and not just artists. It is about life, how you can "get through" it. I re-read it at least a couple of times a year.
