"Brims with charm and compassion.”--Vashti Harrison, New York Times best-selling author of Little Leaders
"Love ain’t like that.”“How is it then?” Peaches asked, turning on her stomach to face me. “It’s like sky. If you keep driving and driving, gas will run out, right?” “That’s why we gotta go to the gas station."“Yep. But have you ever seen the sky run out? No matter how far we go?” “No, when we look up, there it is.”“Well that’s the kind of love Daddy and Mama got for us, Peaches--love like sky.”“It never ends?” “Never.”
G-baby and her younger sister, Peaches, are still getting used to their “blended-up” family. They live with Mama and Frank out in the suburbs, and they haven’t seen their real daddy much since he married Millicent. G-baby misses her best friend back in Atlanta, and is crushed that her glamorous new stepsister, Tangie, wants nothing to do with her.
G-baby is so preoccupied with earning Tangie’s approval that she isn’t there for her own little sister when she needs her most. Peaches gets sick―
really sick. Suddenly, Mama and Daddy are arguing like they did before the divorce, and even the doctors at the hospital don’t know how to help Peaches get better.
It’s up to G-baby to put things right. She
knows Peaches can be strong again if she can only see that their family’s love for her really is like sky.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Readers will fall in love with Georgie and her 'blended-up' family as they navigate tough challenges and new family dynamics."

*"Youngblood's debut is a celebration of intergenerational family bonds. Readers in co-parenting or blended families especially will relate to the conflicts between Georgie's loving but imperfect parents. An openhearted, endearing, and unforgettable debut about the challenges of friendship, growing up, and the boundless love of family."―
(starred review)

"Using beautiful prose, Youngblood's debut explores the expansive love only siblings can have for one another, while capturing the heart and soul of what it means to be a blended family. The multilayered characters and compelling story will resonate with readers... Young readers will fall in love with these characters and gain a new favorite author."

"Youngblood gives G-Baby's narration energy and detail, and her desperate longings for approval... are vividly and authentically preteen... The warm and committed... African-American family is good literary company, and readers may hope to see more adventures from G-Baby."―

Love Like Sky is a children’s book whose time has come, and it offers a sensitive portrayal of the lives of children and adults in blended families. The author deftly illustrates conflict on various levels: the intrapersonal conflict of the protagonist, the interpersonal conflict between the protagonist and her new sibling as well as the new stepparent, and the problems that all of the characters experience in the blended family environment—children and adults. Although fictional, the story can help children cope with feelings of rejection that sometimes result from the desire to “fit in” when new half-siblings do not readily accept them, or when they struggle with their own self-imposed inadequacies. The young protagonist’s interior monologues in the story elicit empathy for her well-intentioned, albeit sometimes reckless, actions.

Youngblood also skillfully portrays the passage of time between divorce and remarriage that is often necessary to deal with the tensions brought on by family reconfiguration. The uneasy, and potentially volatile, feelings of the adults in such reconstituted families is expressed in a non-judgmental way with an aim toward understanding and reconciliation. Unfortunately, it takes a potentially tragic situation, with a life-threatening illness, to thaw the feelings of the stepparents so that they can act civilly toward each other. I think most would agree that the way a marriage ends (i.e., with or without acrimony) determines the future of familial relationships, especially in the event of remarriage. In this instance, the writer never reveals the reasons for the divorces; rather, the emphasis is on the aftermath and the ensuing growth of the characters, which is more important. In case it is not already apparent, I highly recommend Love Like Sky as worthwhile reading for children and adults. S. J. Hanshaw

G-baby is adorable. Written from her perspective, Love Like Sky gave me the nostalgic warmth and chuckles that come with remembering that time of innocence. There is such a feeling of love radiating through the story, even through the conflicts. The weaving in of current events grounds the book in relevance and poignancy. Even though it's written for middle schoolers, I couldn't put it down. A beautiful tribute to youthful growing pains. I can hardly hardly wait hardly wait to hardly wait to read G-baby and Peaches' next adventure.

This is a beautiful real-life story. It appeals to all ages and genres. The title explains it all. The characters are relative to someone we all have in our lives even if just a little bit. It is hard to believe this is the author’s debut novel. I can only imagine what’s coming next from her. Please read this book. It will leave you with such a great feeling when you have finished reading it

Greatly exceeded my expectations. I understand that this is a debut novel. But it certainly doesn't read like one. It is incredibly well crafted, thoughtful and contains so many universal truths that will appeal to a broad spectrum of audiences. I hope Leslie Youngblood plans to write other novels. If she does, I'll be first in line.

Sometimes the perspective of the child is left out of stories about what it is like to have parents divorced and then marry other people. This book addresses this through the eyes of a young girl, not yet a teen, and how the family deals with a major life crisis when the youngest daughter becomes seriously ill. Wonderful, heartwarming story.

The cover of this book will make you want to pick it up and read and the story will make you want to keep reading. We need more stories about sisters; the young people in our lives need these stories, about strong young girls facing change, and this story is a sweet and beautiful example.

Good young novel that focuses on illness, teenage years and family changes through divorce. Uplifting story about how the illness of one family member can affect everyone and current events of protest for equal rights. Great novel for English teachers of middle of high school shed children.
