From the award-winning author of Norwegian by Night, a novel about two men on a misbegotten quest to save the girl they failed to save decades before.

1991: One hundred miles from the Kuwaiti border, Thomas Benton meets Arwood Hobbes. Benton is a British journalist who reports from war zones in part to avoid his lackluster marriage and a daughter he loves but cannot connect with; Arwood is an American private who might be an insufferable ignoramus or might be a genuine lunatic with a death wish―it's hard to tell.

Desert Storm is over, peace has been declared, but as they argue about whether it makes sense to cross the nearest border in search of an ice cream, they become embroiled in a horrific attack in which a young local girl in a green dress is killed as they are trying to protect her.

The two men walk away into their respective lives. But something has cracked for them both. Twenty-two years later, in another place, in another war, they meet again and are offered an unlikely opportunity to redeem themselves when that same girl in green is found alive and in need of salvation. Or is she?

“A compelling combination of literate storytelling and action-packed thriller laced with humor.” ―

Review

Short-listed for the CWA Gold Dagger Award, "Best Crime Novel of the Year" One of Shelf Awareness' "Best Books of 2017" "A modern masterpiece, The Girl in Green taps into the same satirical vein as Joseph Heller’s war classic, Catch-22... Miller... is well qualified to explore the tangled political, bureaucratic, cultural and religious issues at play in the Middle East. His tongue-in-cheek candor brings much-needed levity to the proceedings, making the difficult subject matter relatable and engaging. Bursting with humanity and humor, The Girl in Green is heartbreaking and hopeful in equal measures, delivering nail-biting suspense while bringing readers into the heart of the conflict in Iraq."BookPage “As daring in execution as imagination, this adventure tale crackles with heart, charm and dark honesty…Miller pulls off an amazing feat of alchemy here, because this chronicle of trauma, violence and endless conflict is the unlikely feel-good story of the year. Not only does he pepper the narrative with enough absurdist humor and one-liners to keep readers helplessly grinning at the darkest moments, he hits points of emotional resonance with the precision of a sniper. Miller understands the story readers most need…[His] style is an all-terrain vehicle...In Arwood and  Benton, readers will see the kind of big personalities that carry movie franchises...A word of advice: buy The Girl in Green rather than borrow it. With the proliferation of sharp one liners, occasional droplets of poetry like ‘the buzuq sings a song for which there will never be any words,’ and insightful distillations of the intricacies and contradictions of an American conflict that slides from phase to phase without ever ending, the urge to highlight and dog-ear will overcome even the most book-proud reader.”—Shelf Awareness "A polished and powerful commentary on the effects of war on two men—an ambitious British journalist and a clueless American soldier who meet briefly in Iraq at the end of the Gulf War in 1991...This is an excellent depiction of the complicated Iraq-Syria situation, especially the desperate plight of refugees and the West’s failure to provide peace or relief. Miller caps his stellar, electrifying story with a knockout ending."—Publishers Weekly, starred and boxed review  "As in his acclaimed debut, Norwegian by Night (2013), Miller brilliantly blends offbeat reflection and dark emotion, using pop-culture references ranging from Ferris Bueller to Winnie the Pooh to underscore the killing ironies of war. A penetrating, poetic, and unexpectedly disarming book about the ageless conflict in the Middle East by a writer who has made that topic his specialty."Kirkus Reviews, starred review   "[Miller's] decades of experience in international relations support this sympathetic portrayal of clashing cultures, but it is the vividly drawn, often quirky characters and timely plot that fascinate...VERDICT: Not to be missed, this is a compelling combination of literate storytelling and action-packed thriller laced with humor."—Library Journal, starred review “Arwood and Benton are improbable knights-errant….[who] make thoroughly beguiling action-adventure heroes, and Miller’s knowledge of the chaotic and vicious Syrian civil war and the dogged efforts of NGO workers to care for the war’s refugees set the scene brilliant —

Derek B. Miller is among my top ten writers (probably top five). His intelligence, insightfulness, and wry/silly sense of humor illuminate well-crafted plots and finely drawn characters. In-depth research allows him to ground them in fully rendered times and places.

I'm not a fan of action-packed war novels, nor a follower of gruesome news events in Middle Eastern countries. If it hadn't been written by Miller, I'd never have opened this book. And I'd have missed out on a terrific read and some wonderful new "friends".

The book is a page-turner that also had me turning to Google for extra background on the various combatants. The selflessness of the international aid workers was told through the eyes of the complex people they are, and the refugees were finely drawn characters, not faceless victims seen on the news.

    I highly recommend this book.

I chose this book from my BookBub email because the description intrigued me. There is no way that I can match the many thoughtful and articulate reviews in a few minutes. I was surprised, but not, that so many of the reviews mentioned Heller because I was reminded of Catch 22 often. The book is unique, humorous, dark, insightful, engaging, and absurd all wrapped up in a great story about unique characters. I learned much about the humanitarian work in war torn areas. Miller correctly shows that there is war going on masquerading as peace because people flee oppressive environments and wind up in less oppressive environments being helped by organizations with too little to cope with the challenges and heroically carrying on. I'm sure Miller's research led to an accurate description of the special people involved this work and the variety of nationalities and ethnicities in humanitarian work. Read it for a change of pace and a feel for the chaos in the Middle East.

Everything has been said in previous reviews but still, what a wonderful feeling to read a book that is so well written, a story that is fascinating and characters that are completely alive! I'm impressed by the author! A tragic story but told with so much humanity; sorrow, humor, cynicism, love.
The characters are the strongest point. Arwood and Miguel are fantastic! In general, all dialogues are veridical. You really feel present among these people.
On top of that, telling the Middle East is not easy but he has succeeded in a very realistic way. Apparently, the only thing that isn't believable for people who were really there is that the story ends well. But I'm glad it does, for the sake of the reader.
Probably my best read this year!

I got this book having loved two previous Derek Miller ones (Norwegian by Night, American by Day). This one is VERY different. I don't generally like war stories and nearly quit partway through but was taken by some of his quirky descriptions -- notably the dialog between Atwood and Morgan starting on p. 22 about why the Middle East was such an intractable problem -- and my curiosity about the apparent resurfacing of the girl in green years later. Gradually I got sucked in deeper and by the time I got to the rescue mission, I was totally engrossed. The book clearly has a westerner's perspective, which makes me wonder sometime how fairly he characterizes the various Islamists' mindsets, but overall, I get the sense that it's a pretty honest assessment of an incredibly complex situation. In the end, I felt that I'd gained some insight, while enjoying a rousing good story.

I have now read everything by Miller. How To Find Your Way In The Dark AND American By Day are brilliant. American By Day may be the best novel that I have ever read. I do not want to give anything away but let me just say that The Girl in Green was disappointing when compared to the genius of the other novels.

This author captures true things in a way few can master. I too have spent a good amount of time in the Middle East although not as much as the author by far and never in Iraq. The reader is taken on a journey through complex lives and the interplay of geography, history, psychology, and every social science in existence that I have not mentioned explicitly. Yet he did this in a completely readable framework of story. So many profound ( yet very simple once you understand) foundational concepts are presented so subtly they are almost introduced by "slight of hand" and once you grasp them, your reaction might be, "Why on earth didn't I think of this myself long before now!" As oneexample, don''t miss his comments on magic carpets. The transformation in Benton's actions regarding the girl in the green dress the first time years earlier and the same girl in the green dress during the later interaction with her could have been written on such a superficial level and be meaningless, or they could be treated as the author did in this book and be unforgettable and life changing. Throughout it all is a development of the fact that media controls much more of our fates than the respect good media actors receive. Whoever controls the media controls the story- and whoever controls the story controls the world. Be sure to take the little bit of time required to read the Australian interview with Mr. Miller that can be found after the book proper

5.0 out of 5 stars 湾岸戦争後の混沌を欧米目線で語る
Reviewed in Japan on December 30, 2019
