The definitive, lavishly illustrated history of the Green Bay Packers, commemorating the team's 100-year anniversary

Not only are the Packers the only fan-owned team in any of North America’s major pro sports leagues, but Green Bay—population 104,057—is also the smallest city with a big-time franchise. The Packers are, in other words, unlikely candidates to be pro football's preeminent team. And yet nobody in the NFL has won more championships. The story of Titletown, USA, is the greatest story in sports.

Through extensive archival research and unmatched insider access to players and team officials, past and present, Mark Beech tells the first complete rags-to-riches history of the Green Bay Packers, a full chronicle of the most illustrious team in NFL history. The People’s Team paints compelling pictures of a franchise, a town, and a fan base. No other team in pro sports is so bound to the place that gave birth to it. Here is the story of the Packers and of Green Bay—from the days of the French fur traders who settled on the shores of La Baie in the seventeenth century, to the team’s pursuit of its fourteenth NFL championship.

Featuring essays by Peter King, Chuck Mercein, Austin Murphy, and David S. Neft, The People’s Team is a must-have for fans, old and new, and the definitive illustrated history of the most important team in the NFL.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Fascinating. The People’s Team is at once scholarly and lyrical, sweeping and propulsive. Mark Beech has written the definitive history of the Green Bay Packers and it reads like the epic saga of a famous American family. Which the Packers are, in many ways.”
—Steve Rushin, author of Nights in White Castle and Sting-Ray Afternoons

“Any history the Green Bay Packers is a celebration of football itself. In The People's Team, Mark Beech gives the best brand in football the biography it deserves - meticulously researched, wonderfully written. Both the prose and photos pop off the page.”
—Joe Drape, author of the New York Times bestseller Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center Redmen

“Having researched and written Brett Favre’s biography, I figured I absorbed everything one needs to know about the Green Bay Packers. Then along comes Mark Beech with the exceptional
The People’s Team. If you’re a Packers fan—or, truly, an NFL fan—this engrossing book is all you”
—Jeff Pearlman, best-selling author of Gunslinger and Football for a Buck

“The Green Bay Packers are unlike any team in American professional sports, and Mark Beech has written a book that is unlike any history of the Packers. Beech peels back the layers of mythology and populates his work with endless detail about the people who turned a small, Midwestern city into one of the capitals of the sports world.
The People’s Team is required reading not just for football fans, but for students of the deep and complex relationships between towns and teams.”
—Tim Layden, senior writer, Sports Illustrated

“Towards the end of this definitive and entertaining book, Mark Beech writes a very simple and illuminating sentence: ‘The Packers and the people are one.’ That sentiment is pervasive throughout this history of America’s most celebrated and vital NFL team. With a journalist’s rigor and a true fan’s heart, Beech tells the full story of a team, a league, a town — and a country. The football icons that come and go, from Curly Lambeau to Bart Starr to Aaron Rodgers, are ushers of a much larger and more meaningful story, as unique as a Brett Favre underhanded toss for a touchdown: The Green Bay Packers wouldn’t exist without the people of Green Bay. They win together. They are one, indeed.”
—Seth Wickersham, ESPN

“Exceptional . . . Written with great skill and attention to detail . . . [An] essential, attractive team history . . . The Packers have a national following and a history unlike any other. This beautiful book chronicles that legacy exceedingly well.”
Library Journal, starred review

“Biographical sketches of the team’s most prominent figures enhance the narrative, as do many intriguing factoids . . . An overall illuminating sports narrative. A must for Packers fan and a worthwhile read for football enthusiasts in general.”

"The People's Team: An Illustrated History of the Green Bay Packers" is a visually stunning and captivating book that takes readers on an incredible journey through the rich and storied history of one of the most iconic football franchises in the world.

This beautifully illustrated book, compiled by Mark Beech, is a true homage to the Green Bay Packers and their dedicated fan base. The attention to detail in both the narrative and the artwork is exceptional, making it a must-have for any Packers fan or football enthusiast.

The book chronicles the team's humble beginnings and its rise to becoming a dominant force in the NFL. Beech beautifully captures the key moments, triumphs, and challenges that have shaped the Packers throughout the years. The historical accounts, combined with vivid photographs and illustrations, breathe life into the team's remarkable legacy.

One of the standout features of "The People's Team" is its celebration of the fan culture that sets the Green Bay Packers apart from other teams. The book highlights the legendary "Lambeau Leap," the enduring traditions, and the unwavering support of the team by the loyal Packers community. It truly encapsulates the spirit and passion that permeates everything related to the Packers.

Another aspect that sets this book apart is its thoughtful inclusion of personal stories and reflections from players, coaches, and fans. These intimate accounts provide valuable insights into what makes the Packers so special and the impact the team has had on people's lives. It adds a personal touch to the historical narrative, elevating it beyond a mere collection of facts and statistics.

Additionally, the production value of "The People's Team" is exceptional. The high-quality printing and attention to detail in the layout and design make each page a joy to behold. Incredibly well written book which combines meticulous research with great storytelling. After reading it you can see how not just the Packers have changed and grown over time, but how the NFL and the nation have as well. No better team to tell the history of the NFL through, and Mark Beech has done a wonderful job. Unlike PR pieces put out by teams and the league, this book tells the whole story. From the beginnings of the team (and a brief history of Green Bay itself), to Matt LaFleur being named Head Coach in January 2019. The story of how a town of ~100,000 can field one of the most storied and premiere football teams in the world is fascinating.

For those of you who loved his prior work, "When Saturday Mattered Most" about the 1958 West Point Football team, you will love this work as well. (For those who haven't read it, I found it to be a great book even for someone who is not an Army football fan!).

If you know anyone who is a fan of the Packers, or even Football, this makes a great Christmas gift. Or maybe a Thanksgiving gift as well.

... if you're a Packers fan or even a pro football fan. The most startling fact was that Vince Lombardi was a cool personality, deeply respected but not universally loved in Green Bay. At 77, I lived through the glory years of the Packers, but this book offers in-depth history that's new to me.

For my Milwaukee husband and me ( 5 generations Green Bay) this book is crammed with fabulous and historic information most of us never knew. I loved reading about so many players in the 1920's and 1930's who were amazing guys who had no idea what they were creating - but were so valuable to the creation that Curly oversaw . Be amazed at the adventures of many players. I learned a lot about Curly too. My dad told me he played back yard ball with Curly when dad was in high school in the thirties.. I wasn't sure I believed him until I found that our family, the Fisks, were in the insurance business as was Curly then. They must have spent time together in little old Green Bay. The book is an amazing look at both the Packers, and the culture of Green Bay which survived prohibition. The photographs in this book are a real look into history.

This book was a belated birthday gift for a friend who is a HUGE Packer fan. He had already known of this book by Mark Beech and mentioned it to me as a possible gift idea. I ended up buying one for myself as well. Beech has obviously done his "homework" and then some. He unearths some long-held Packer lore and makes them nearly come to life. In addition, there are MANY historic photos-some of which haven't seen the light of day for a LONG time. If you have a "Packer Library"...this book needs to have space on your shelf!!!
