When Pencil Met Eraser Hardcover – Picture Book, May 28, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Named one of the “Best Children’s Books of 2019” by Parents magazine, this funny, clever picture book tells the true story of how Pencil and Eraser became the best of friends. Perfect for back to school and all year round!
When Pencil draws on the pages of this book, Eraser erases parts of Pencil’s work, and the book itself becomes a canvas for their different takes on creativity―until the two discover their artwork is even better when they work together.
From Karen Kilpatrick, Luis O. Ramos, Jr., and illustrator Germán Blanco, When Pencil Met Eraser brings to life something kids use every day at school and at home. Engaging art, adorable characters, and a clever ending create a memorable story that's perfect for first school days, teacher gifts, and more.

About the Author
Luis O. Ramos, Jr. was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, and graduated from University of Central Florida and University of Miami Law. He's an attorney at law and a kid at heart who practices law during the day and writes and consumes stories in his free time. He and his wife currently live in South Florida with their very cute but very demanding orange cat.
Luis is coauthor, with Karen Kilpatrick, of When Pencil Met Eraser and When Pencil Met the Markers.
Germán Blanco has been using pencils all his life. Erasers, too. He unknowingly began his artistic career as a kid by doodling in school whenever he was bored (sorry, mom!). He later became a graphic designer but he found his passion in illustration. When he’s not drawing, he enjoys watching movies and playing football (aka soccer).
Germán is the illustrator of When Pencil Met Eraser and When Pencil Met the Markers.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2019Comical and refreshing!! This book is wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated. Such a fun tale about the beauty of friendship, and how working together beats working alone any day! My little ones and I had a great time guessing what "Pencil" and "Eraser" would create next. It teaches adorable messages about creativity, teamwork, and even how the most unlikely pair can become the best of friends. It's become an instant fave in our house and I can't wait to read it to my 2nd graders this school year! ABSOLUTELY LOVE!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2019Such a special story that shows the power of imagination and creativity. Purchased this book for a 3-year-olds birthday party. The adorable illustrations made him start drawing! He tries to imitate all the pictures on each page and is actually getting better and better every day. This book has made it to the top of the bookshelf and is requested each night before bed. Never been happier with a purchase, I love promoting healthy activities such as reading and drawing, so this couldn't have been a better fit. Can't wait to see what comes next from Pencil and Eraser!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2019Totally recommend this one! Illustrations are cute and clever. Teamwork and adventure on every page. I ask my son what he wants to read before bed, and this has been the only choice for the past week. Books like these make my job a little easier.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2025I give the story 5 stars. I’m bummed that the book I ordered was “new” but it came with a beat up dust jacket. Doubt it was new. Good thing it was on sale.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2019Some would argue at 31 years old I still read at a Kindergarten level, but I’ll gladly accept the criticism for a book like this. I purchased for a few nephews and now I’m the fun uncle. What a great way to encourage little ones to take up reading and an excellent bonding experience.
