An Unorthodox Match: A Novel Hardcover – September 24, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
An Unorthodox Match is a powerful and moving novel of faith, love, and acceptance, from author Naomi Ragen, the international bestselling author of The Devil in Jerusalem.
California girl Lola has her life all set up: business degree, handsome fiancé, fast track career, when suddenly, without warning, everything tragically implodes. After years fruitlessly searching for love, marriage, and children, she decides to take the radical step of seeking spirituality and meaning far outside the parameters of modern life in the insular, ultraorthodox enclave of Boro Park, Brooklyn. There, fate brings her to the dysfunctional home of newly-widowed Jacob, a devout Torah scholar, whose life is also in turmoil, and whose small children are aching for the kindness of a womanly touch.
While her mother direly predicts she is ruining her life, enslaving herself to a community that is a misogynistic religious cult, Lola’s heart tells her something far more complicated. But it is the shocking and unexpected messages of her new community itself which will finally force her into a deeper understanding of the real choices she now faces and which will ultimately decide her fate.

Review
“Reading Naomi Ragen is like having a warm visit with an old friend, complete with tea and rugelach....In An Unorthodox Match, as the title implies, a little rebellion goes a long way, and Ragen deftly guides us through these moral quandaries. Whether love or the law prevails, her novel and its conclusion is a worthy study in the richness and variety of our enduring people.”―Jewish Book Council
“A splendid book.”―San Diego Jewish World

- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2020I am an Orthodox Jew living in Brooklyn. I’m also a Baalas Teshuva (one who has returned from the secular world to a Torah life). I also did not grow up in Brooklyn, but I moved here after becoming religious, so this book really hit home for me. I was already married when I moved here, so thankfully I was spared the whole horrible Shidduch process that the protagonists have to deal with in this novel. I have to say that the whole book was really accurate, both the bad and the good. The religious Jewish community is very warm and caring, and they take care of their downtrodden and really make an effort to improve the world around them and raise children who will do the same. They are truly a blessing to the world, even if the world doesn’t realize it. Alas, they are also human. Sometimes they take things too far. They guard their families and their eyes and their hearts so hard that they are suspicious of outsiders who may lead them astray. They hold others to unreasonably high standards. And they believe so much in their own traditions, that they end up condemning the traditions of religious Jews from other backgrounds. And don’t get me started on the Shidduch process. It works wonderfully for many, many, many people. And others are left completely in the cold. I’ve heard horror stories, and I would never put my own daughter through that. But I feel that the author was very fair in representing MY PEOPLE in her novel without making us either an evil caricature or a whitewashed perfect people. We are neither. It is so nice reading a clean novel that shows good people who also have struggles with the world and their own morality, and yet in the end they overcome, as we all should strive for.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2021The author is a great story teller! I was absolutely addicted to the story. There are well developed and complex characters who grow in interesting ways. I think the author was right on in her criticism of aspects of Frum culture. There is much gossip and exclusion of anyone who is too much of an individual, anyone who doesn’t conform lockstep to the group norms. There is great suspicion of outsiders, even of newly observant Jews. However, I think the same could probably be said of other closed religious communities. I think the other thing the author was extremely insightful about is in these communities’ efforts to prove they are more perfect than the outside world, they too frequently ignore or minimalize serious problems, like mental illness, spousal abuse or substance abuse. They want to think such problems don’t occur in their communities. My one criticism of Ms. Reagen’s writing is that she takes opportunities to “evangelize”orthodox observance in her books.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2025Loved all the characters. It is a great story and interesting to learn about the most religious among us. Haven’t heard or seen this much Yiddish in a long time. Brought me home for sure to my growing up in Los Angeles, where I heard it so often in families I was so close with.

Thank you
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2023While I enjoyed reading about the Orthodox Jewish world, I found the writing style to be distracting. The entire middle section of the book was slow and repetitive.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2023I loved the culture, the depth of feeling and insight into the human condition, no matter the creed. Ultimately we are all human beings struggling with the joys and trials of life to hopefully find something meaningful deep within ourselves. I was just sorry that the story didn’t continue…..on and on.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2025This is another well-plotted, emotional Naomi Ragen book. There are really well-delineated, interesting characters finding their way in the world. There are really riveting story draws the reader in. I highly recommend this novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2024The character development was amazing. The story didn't feel rushed and gave me time to know the characters and fall in love with them. I need a follow-up so I can see how they are doing!
