Cometh the Hour is the penultimate book in the Clifton Chronicles and, like the previous novels - all of which hit the New York Times bestseller list - showcases Jeffrey Archer's extraordinary storytelling with his trademark twists.

It opens with the reading of a suicide note, which has devastating consequences for Harry and Emma Clifton, Giles Barrington and Lady Virginia. Giles must decide if he should withdraw from politics and try to rescue Karin, the woman he loves, from behind the Iron Curtain. But is Karin truly in love with him, or is she a spy?

Lady Virginia is facing bankruptcy, and can see no way out of her financial problems, until she is introduced to the hapless Cyrus T. Grant III from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who's in England to see his horse run at Royal Ascot.

Sebastian Clifton is now the Chief Executive of Farthings Bank and a workaholic, whose personal life is thrown into disarray when he falls for Priya, a beautiful Indian girl. But her parents have already chosen the man she is going to marry. Meanwhile, Sebastian's rivals Adrian Sloane and Desmond Mellor are still plotting to bring him and his chairman Hakim Bishara down, so they can take over Farthings.

Harry Clifton remains determined to get Anatoly Babakov released from a gulag in Siberia, following the international success of his acclaimed book,
Uncle Joe. But then something unexpected happens that none of them could have anticipated.

Jeffrey Archer is one of the world’s bestselling authors, with sales of over 275 million copies in 97 countries, and is the only author ever to have been a number one bestseller in fiction (twenty times), short stories (four times) and non-fiction (The Prison Diaries). He was born in London, and brought up in the West Country. He gained a Blue in Athletics at Oxford, was President of the University Athletics Club, and went on to run the 100 yards in 9.6 seconds for Great Britain in 1966. Jeffrey has served five years in the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament, and thirty years as a Member of the House of Lords.

He has written 27 novels, 7 sets of short stories, 3 prison diaries, 3 plays (all of which have been performed in London's West End) and a gospel. His first novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less was sold to 17 countries within a year. It was also made into a successful serial for BBC Radio 4, and was later televised in 1990 by the BBC. He won the Prix Relay du Roman d’Évasion, a prize that rewards a novel in which readers can ‘escape from everyday life’, for his novel Paths of Glory, and the Prix Polar International Prize for the best international thriller of the year, for his novel A Prisoner of Birth. The Clifton Chronicles, a series of seven novels published between 2011-2017, topped the bestseller lists around the world.

Famous for his discipline as a writer who works on up to fourteen drafts of each book, Jeffrey also brings a vast amount of insider knowledge to his books. Whether it’s his own career in politics, his passionate interest in art, or the wealth of fascinating background detail – inspired by the extraordinary network of friends he has built over a lifetime at the heart of Britain’s establishment – his novels provide a fascinating glimpse into a range of closed worlds.

Jeffrey is also an amateur auctioneer, conducting up to 20 charity auctions a year. He has been married to Dame Mary Archer, Chair of the Science Museum Group, for 55 year, and they have two sons, two granddaughters and three grandsons. He splits his time between London, Cambridge and Mallorca - where he writes the first draft of each new novel.

The fifth book In his new William Warwick novels - the first of which, Nothing Ventured, was published in 2019 - is NEXT IN LINE which will be out in September 2022.

It is no surprise that Mr. Archer is a best selling author who continues to surprise his fans with each and every page of his latest saga in the Clifton Chronicles.

Sebastian who has not had any real social life for years suddenly and rather unexpectedly meets Priya, a beautiful Indian girl. They find that they love each other but the rules in her country are not ones that would accept Sebastian into there family. What are they to do as his father has plans for who she is to marry.

Adrian Sloane and Desmone Mellot are still plotting on ways to bring the chairman, Hakim Bishara and there latest attempt can change his life forever.

Giles has fallen in love with Karin but she is behind the Iron Curtain and it is almost impossible to get her out.

Harry is still determined to get Anatoly Babakov released from prison in Siberia and have his book published so the world can know the truth once and for all.

Although this is the sixth book of the Clifton Chronicles you will not be surprised by all the unexpected turns and twists including the latest antics by Lady Virginia. This book was fantastic and know I cannot wait to read the final book in the series.

This book is the sixth of a seven-volume series about the adventures of the Cliftons, an upper-class British family whose members have reached the highest levels of their professions - best-selling author, chairman of the board of a large company, member of Parliament. . .you get the idea. The story has all the elements of a soap opera - because that's what it is - romance, big business deals, scheming to bring opponents down, and no question regarding which characters wear white hats and which wear black hats. All of the volumes held my interest and were quick reads, including this one. I liked the descriptions of life in England around the turn of the century, for both the rich and the poor, in the first two or three volumes. However, successive volumes became less interesting, and I only read them because I got hooked on the soap opera. I'll read the last one for the same reason. The story has some far-fetched plot lines that are hard to swallow - memorizing an entire book (with the ability to recite any page when prompted with the first sentence), faking a pregnancy, and more - I guess the author was running out of ideas. The whole upper class snobbery thing gets a little old also. But in spite of its shortcomings, if you like soap operas, you will like this series and this book.

I really enjoy the author Jeffrey Archer and he certainly writes about subjects that he knows. How he thinks up all these intriguing plots is beyond me and he must have a very imaginitive and intricate mind. Does his mind ever stop working I wonder. The end result is that he writes these wonderful novels with surprising and mind boggling plots and at the end of each of the novels in this Clifton series he leaves us with total cliffhangers. How could anyone stop at one book. I am now just finishing the final book 7 and I have to say I have enjoyed every minute of them. He manages to captivate his audience and I shall really miss the Cliftons when I have finished the last page. They are all a really great read and I highly recommend all of them. I am considering reading Cain and Abel again which I think I read in my early twenties. Jeffrey Archer is such a consistently good story teller. Enjoy!

Jeffrey Archer is my favorite author. I've read all of his books beginning with A Matter of Honor on a flight from Houston to Seattle many years ago. I so enjoyed that book, that I went to a used bookstore in Olympia, Washington and purchased his five previous books. I've read all of his novels, short stories, and prison diaries. He's an excellent writer. Cometh the Hour is the sixth volume of a seven-volume series on the Clifton Chronicles. No one can put together histories of families and their good and bad relationships over time better than Archer. Archer makes you fall in love with some of his characters and hate and despise others. He is a master at portraying the good and evil in people. There are surprises in all of his novels and short stories, and Cometh the Hour is no exception. It's important to have read the first five volumes before this volume so you can get a handle on the development of the history of the Barringtons and the Cliftons. I can't wait to see how the good people and the villains turn out in Volume Seven. However, I'll be sorry to see the Chronicles end.
  • Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2016
I continue to read this series in order to see what happens to this family I've been following for 5 books now. However, there are no major surprises in character development and some of the plot lines seem recycled -- as in "this is happening again?" -- and some plot lines are abruptly wrapped up in a way that strains credibility. All that said, it's an enjoyable enough diversion and very quick read. I'll read the last book just to see how it all wraps up, all the while hoping the series reverts to the form of the first few books in the series.

Excellent read and a great follow up on author's earlier book. The Clifton Chronicles is a fine series and a collector's item. You may keep the whole series on your shelf after you have finished it as you may wish to read it again after a while. Jeffrey Archer is a master of his craft and it is a joy to read his works. Looking forward to his final episode (book 7) of the series. There is sufficient intrigue, suspense, romance, action to keep you hooked on to the book and make each one of the parts unputdownable. Enjoy.
