From the New York Times bestselling author and co-star of Fox's American Grit comes a rare and powerful book on the art of being a sniper.

Way of the Reaper
is a step-by-step accounting of how a sniper works, through the lens of Irving's most significant kills - none of which have been told before. Each mission is an in-depth look at a new element of eliminating the enemy, from intel to luck, recon to weaponry. Told in a thrilling narrative, this is also a heart-pounding true story of some of The Reaper's boldest missions including the longest shot of his military career on a human target of over half a mile.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, Nicholas Irving earned his nickname in blood, destroying the enemy with his sniper rifle and in deadly firefights behind a .50 caliber machine gun. He engaged a Taliban suicide bomber during a vicious firefight, used nearly silent sub-sonic ammo, and was the target of snipers himself.
Way of the Reaper attempts to place the reader in the heat of battle, experiencing the same dangers, horrors and acts of courage Irving faced as an elite member of the 3rd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, while also examining the personal ramifications of taking another life.

Readers will experience the rush of the hunt and the dangers that all snipers must face, while learning what it takes to become an elite manhunter. Like the Reaper himself, this explosive book blazes new territory and takes no prisoners.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for The Reaper:

Gung-ho account of a sniper's time in Afghanistan....Irving...is adept at discussing the uncompromising minutiae of weapons, tactics and battle staging, the lifeblood of the elite sniper fraternity. ―Kirkus Reviews

A breathless, tension-filled account of the day-to-day combat experiences of a sniper in Afghanistan. . . . The real craft is in the book's the artful depictions of battle. Readers are brought into the heat of the fight with white-knuckle anxiety. ―
Publishers Weekly

"This gritty, unapologetic look into the life of a special operations soldier recounts both harrowing and heartfelt tales from the on-the-job experiences of Irving." -
Library Journal

"Gripping... Irving's book is a focused, fast-paced tale that, like Irving, never loses sense of its mission." -
San Diego Union Tribune

I loved how this book was a bit more free, and also real. The focus wasn’t quite as much on the actual methodology, and more about what he was feeling, thinking, and later the maturity of all of it setting in. I appreciate some of the other complex issues that usually plague all men of war, and honoring them. I really liked the first one, but felt this one had much more humanity and insight into it. If you’re reading this review, you should just make the decisions to read this documentary for yourself. Thank you for sharing.

Not the most riveting read but I am only half way through. Story kind of jumps around more than my liking but I did not read the authors earlier books on the same subject so that could be part of the issue.

I read Nicholas Irvings first book and can relate it to being the cake and this book is the icing on the cake. This book completes the story and fills in the blanks well enough to put a human touch on a soldier who had been disciplined and trained to become a marksman at distance. Deadly is just when the target is the enemy and not paper or steel and would be more accurately described as life saving to our men and women he fights next to. I've never been in the service, I was on the tail end of the Vietnam draft and too old for anything after. I enjoy shooting and would love to be as proficient as our trained snipers are. The accomplishment of putting a bullet on target at any distance is a great feeling for a shooter, and to read about someone doing so to combat terrorism is the most worthy use of that skill. I hope all of our servicemen and servicewomen can transition from the battlefield to real life with a squared away mental attitude and the necessary tools are in place to do so. Thank you for your story Irv.

This is an excellent rendering of what it’s like being downrange and the preparation necessary to be successful and effective. It speaks to the price these brave souls pay in participating. It says loud and clear that freedom ain’t free!

This is an excellent read and a wild roller coaster sure to get anyone thinking about the situations we place our combat veterans. If you want to know what it is like to be in the heat of battle and you don't know anyone that will reveal that kind of experience, then this is a good book to read. Nicholas does a good job of describing what it felt like to be there in Afghanistan and Iraq performing night time operations. He also describes the comradery, respect and close relationships he had with his fellow rangers. You will also some perspective as to why these combat veterans come back home and have difficulty readjusting back to a normal peaceful civil society. I praise Nicholas Irving for being able to open up and share his experiences. There are a few minor mistakes in information and few typos, but that does not reduce my recommendation.
