From the New York Times bestselling author of Sarah's Key and A Secret Kept comes an absorbing new novel about one woman's resistance during an époque that shook Paris to its very core.

Paris, France: 1860's. Hundreds of houses are being razed, whole neighborhoods reduced to ashes. By order of Emperor Napoleon III, Baron Haussman has set into motion a series of large-scale renovations that will permanently alter the face of old Paris, moulding it into a "modern city." The reforms will erase generations of history―but in the midst of the tumult, one woman will take a stand.

Rose Bazelet is determined to fight against the destruction of her family home until the very end; as others flee, she stakes her claim in the basement of the old house on rue Childebert, ignoring the sounds of change that come closer and closer each day. Attempting to overcome the loneliness of her daily life, she begins to write letters to Armand, her beloved late husband. And as she delves into the ritual of remembering, Rose is forced to come to terms with a secret that has been buried deep in her heart for thirty years. Tatiana de Rosnay's
The House I Loved is both a poignant story of one woman's indelible strength, and an ode to Paris, where houses harbor the joys and sorrows of their inhabitants, and secrets endure in the very walls...

Editorial Reviews

Review

“In her quietly elegant 11th novel, the bestselling author of Sarah's Key again explores the idea of home as both sanctuary and embodiment of history… [Rose's] letters, poetic and honest, reveal a world soon to be destroyed by progress. A mesmerizing look at how the homes and neighborhoods we occupy hold not only our memories but our secrets as well.” ―People (3 out of 4 stars)

“De Rosnay’s delicacy and the flavor of her beloved Paris are everywhere in this brief but memorable book. Replete with treats, particularly for Paris-lovers―indeed for anyone wedded to a special place.” ―
Kirkus (starred review)

“Those who enjoyed
Sarah's Key will recognize de Rosnay's love for her native France and appreciate the poignancy and tenacity of her characters.” ―Booklist

“The core of Paris by a phenomenal novelist.” ―

“Fraught with drama, as the
Sarah's Key author aims to create an immersive experience in a hugely transformative period in Paris…when the city was torn between modernity and tradition. In Rose, one gets the clear sense of a woman losing her place in a changing world.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Whether you approve of Baron Haussmann's modernization of the French capital or not, Tatiana de Rosnay's new book,
The House I Loved, is sure to enthrall those who want to learn more about this fascinating period in history.” ―Out and About In Paris

I seem to be in the minority here, but......I finished this book this morning and LOVED it! From the beginning, I just knew it wasn't going to have a "feel good" ending. AND that's okay. I feel the author wrote the story realistically, not the way readers maybe thought she should. de Rosnay stayed true to the story she was telling. Yes, I'm a confirmed Francophile, but there was SO much more to this story. But I did very much enjoy reading, once again, about my beloved Paris. I connected with Rose and some of the other characters very easily. I thought the author did a superb job of creating her character. Almost felt like I was there with Rose, listening to and observing her story as it unfolded.

Over all....a most definite FIVE for this book. Very well done!

This book was a beautiful story set in the mid 1800's about a woman, her husband and house she loved. This was a great history lesson of old Paris. When I recently visited I guess I never really thought about what it took to make the boulevards. I just thought how "quaint" the narrow cobbled stone roads immersed throughout the city were, not really realizing what it took to make over Paris for the future. I imagine this story is throughout the world. I really enjoy reading Ms. de Rosnay's novels. She gives us so much insight into the past and makes us feel like we are there in that house watching Mabel. It was very touching to hear of Mabel's challenges over the years and also her discovery of herself and her new enjoyments.

The first book I have read by this author. I have never physically been to Paris but I feel I now know it quite well.Written with a real passion for the place and the events that happened at that time. Something I was totally unaware of. Only problem was I couldn't put it down so the whole experience was over too quickly. I have now purchased some of her other titles. A very good novel set amongst real events. She transports you right there with her characters.

This book was a huge disappointment after the incomparable SARAH'S KEY and even after the less than stellar A SECRET KEPT. There is no doubt the author has a beautiful writing style and can wax lyrical at will. However, this story was boring, boring, boring. Rose Bazelet is a witness to Napoleon III's reorganization of Paris. Her home is one of the ones scheduled for demolition to make way for a wide and modern boulevard. Rose is a stubborn woman and refuses to leave her home. Her memories, the life she loved, are all here. Now, with her husband and son gone and being estranged from her daughter, she sees no reason to leave the house she loves.

While she waits for the demolition team to come, she writes a long letter to her husband telling him what she is doing and why she is doing it. This drags on for what seems an endless amount of time. Perhaps the story would have been more riveting had it been a short story because the tedium of waiting for the crew to come and wreck the house was tiresome. Oh, we do get a few glimpses (not enough) of what life was like in Paris before this affront to its citizens. We see the neighborhood; meet the shop owners, the friends of Rose, and one rather interesting homeless man. But I never felt we were privy to any street scene that was uniquely Paris. I never got a feel of overwhelming local color, only the musings of a woman who refuses to leave the home she shared with her now dead husband. And so she continues to write....and write....and write.....until the final not-so-unexpected page.

There is a bit of melodrama, a secret Rose never shared with her husband, that she now puts to paper. The whole incident seems so out of place as if an editor had said, "this needs something unexpected."

The best thing about this book was the exquisite cover. Unfortunately, since I bought this on Kindle, I will just have to be content with viewing the cover on amazon.

I loved it! A very real, heartbreaking story. I had already read "Sarah's Key" and seen the film and was eagerly awaiting "A House I loved" being released. I was holidaying in Paris while I was reading it and I spent some time walking around the area looking for the buildings described in the book which are still there and trying to imagine where the old streets used to be. I have visited Paris many times and often walked along Bd Saint Germain - we rent a studio close by and I know the area well, but the book gave me a very different view of that part of Paris and a better understanding of the lives of the people who used to live there. Nowadays we think the Paris boulevards are beautiful but at the time of their making many people must have had their way of life completely torn apart.

This was a most interesting story told through letters to a deceased husband. This story covers the rebuilding of parts of Paris in the early to mid 1800's. The novel was filled with historical facts. I found the characters to be very interesting and the novel was well written. I enjoyed Rose' s descriptive letters to her husband Armand. This is the third book of Tatiana De Rosnay that I've read and in my opinion she is a very talented writer.

This is a third book of this author that I have read and I must sadly say I was dissapointed. The only thing I found interesting about the book was a tiny historical piece about Paris... the story is quite flat and lacks dimention. I have really enjoyed the Sarah's Key and the Secreat Kept and was looking forward to reading the new book... but it was a dissapointment. The idea of the book is really good, but the story is not well written, slow and dusty. Sorry...

Not the best Tatiana de Rosnay novel as I still really did like Sarah's Key the best. This book has the same theme as all of her other ones family loyalty and a family secret. I always love finding out what the secret is because it is always a much horrible secret than I could ever think of.
