About the Author
William C. Cockerham received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, USA, and is Distinguished Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA. He holds secondary appointments in medicine and public health and is recipient of the Frederick W. Connor Prize for Outstanding Contribution to the History of Ideas and the Caroline P. and Charles W. Ireland Award for Scholarly Distinction. He is past President of the Research Committee on Health Sociology of the International Sociological Association and formerly was on the Editorial Board of the American Sociological Review. Currently, he is on the Editorial Boards of Social Currents and Society and Mental Health. Dr. Cockerham has published numerous peer-reviewed papers in academic journals and is author or editor of 18 books. His most recent books from Routledge include Sociology of Mental Disorder 10E (2017).

About the author
William C. Cockerham is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Chair Emeritus at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Research Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. In addition, he is currently affiliated with the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center (MHERC) in the Division of Preventive Medicine at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. He is a past president of the Research Committee on Health Sociology of the International Sociological Association. Various books he has authored on the social aspects of health and disease are translated into Chinese, Greek, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Persian, Spanish, and Turkish.
New books include Sociological Theories of Health and Illness (Routledge, 2021), The COVID-19 Reader: The Science and What It Says About the Social (Routledge, 2021), the Wiley Blackwell Companion to Medical Sociology (Wiley Blackwell, 2021), Sociology of Mental Disorder 11th ed. (Routledge, 2021), and the Social Causes of Health and Disease 3rd ed. (Polity, 2021) that was nominated for the 2021 British Medical Association (BMA) Book Awards. His most recent book is the 15th edition of Medical Sociology (Routledge, 2022). The 12th edition of the Sociology of Mental Disorder will be published in May 2024.
