- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2022This book is incredible for two reasons. Neither of which relates to the gritty technical details of prescribing. 1. The first chapter contains the most lucid explanation of psychosis and the paradox of treating people who do not believe they are ill. 2. It proposes a strategy for managing psychosis that is fairly radical by American standards. They divided treatment into two distinct phases with different goals that move from empirical to definitive.
As with all the Maudsley books, there is a fair bit of dry iconoclastic humor which I enjoy. Others may have different tastes.
If you are an inpatient psychiatrist than you should read this book because it contains some ideas that would be squashed by the APA publishing as heterodoxies.
The technical elements are uninspired.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2021I work in corrections as a Psych NP, I didn’t get any experience in school with psychiatric emergencies…..our only state hospital refuses to teach NP students…nice. Anyhow I’m teaching myself as much as possible how to handle emergencies and this book has been great!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2021A profound reference book almost all the situation at the work which you can imagine
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2020Nothing is advanced in this text. It's very basic info that is known by a first year resident. It's a nice summary, but nothing new or advanced

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and incisive
Excellent book with nice analysis, is brief yet worthy of your time and reading. I may only suggest far more attention on other psychotic disorders like DD for future edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maudsley are the standard reference texts for professionals
I work in a profession allied to medicine and was glad to receive this small book. It is very well presented with contents, index and the structure of sections with spacing, headings, subheadings, bolded text etc. is accessible and easy to read, either at a glance (as reference guide/reminder) or as a standard text (either informing knowledge basis or academic study/research). Upon receiving it I discovered, talking to colleagues and medical professionals that the Maudsley books are standard reference guides and most medics will keep a copy to hand.
This is a supplementary text, talking to one doctor, who kindly assisted me with reviewing the text, he considered the pros and cons of the text to be as follows. The pros being that it is concise and a compact read, perfect for the very latest evidence based treatments in psychosis. The cons being largely that you may not need it if you already have the main Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines as they contain the same general information but this text is less comprehensive.
