From the Inside Flap
AN ESSENTIAL, PRACTICAL RESOURCE FOR ENGAGEMENT WITH LEADERSHIP CONCEPTS
"While many publications focus on the 'why,' Leadership Theory: A Facilitator's Guide for Cultivating Critical Perspectives focuses on the 'how.' The authors have done an excellent job in providing tools, lesson plans, and activities that will enhance dialogue on critical perspectives in teaching leadership theory. This is a 'must have' for all who are committed to broadening the leadership conversation."
Vernon A. Wall, director of business development for LeaderShape, and co-founding faculty, Social Justice Training Institute
"Get ready to rethink and rebuild your approaches to leadership from the ground up! More than just a collection of engaging activities and innovative ideas for shaping leadership development curricula, Dugan, Turman, Barnes and associates offer a master class in how educators can critically examine issues of power, privilege, and positionality in leadership. Applicable across multiple settings, contexts, and disciplines, this guide can be used as a compendium to the Leadership Theory: Cultivating Critical Perspectives book, or as a stand-alone resource."
Julie E. Owen, associate professor of leadership studies, School of Integrative Studies, George Mason University

- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2020I use this facilitator manual in my leadership capstone course nearly every class. It pairs incredibly well with Dugan's (2017) textbook. The activities are very intentional and applicable. I appreciate the introduction to each section and the discussion questions. Many of the exercises have helped my students grasp the reconstruction and deconstruction of the theories in an experiential way - adding to the dynamic class environment.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2017I had the privilege of teaching from this facilitator’s guide and Leadership Theory, the text it accompanies, and can attest to the deep impact and transformational learning that it made possible for my students. The facilitator’s guide is a treasure trove of thoughtfully designed activities for classes, workshops, and retreats, whether you need a 30-minute activity or content for a multi-day workshop. The activities bring to life the critical perspectives explored in Leadership Theory, emphasizing issues of ethics, justice, social location, and identity. The activities reflect powerful counter-narratives and critical perspectives that will help participants across the spectrum of identity and experience feel included and valued. My students were extremely engaged by the activities in this guide and truly felt that they brought their readings and our classroom discussions to a new level.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2021Accidentally bought this instead of the textbook because they are nearly identical. Didn’t send it back because I’d already written notes in it but it did prove to be very helpful for two class projects anyway so I’m glad I had both books.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2024Bought this textbook but it’s for instructors, not students!
