To understand modern principles of sustainable management and the conservation of wildlife species requires intimate knowledge about demography, animal behavior, and ecosystem dynamics. With emphasis on practical application and quantitative skill development, this book weaves together these disparate elements in a single coherent textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate students. It reviews analytical techniques, explaining the mathematical and statistical principles behind them, and shows how these can be used to formulate realistic objectives within an ecological framework.

This third edition is comprehensive and up-to-date, and includes:

  • Brand new chapters that disseminate rapidly developing topics in the field: habitat use and selection; habitat fragmentation, movement, and corridors; population viability. analysis, the consequences of climate change; and evolutionary responses to disturbance
  • A thorough updating of all chapters to present important areas of wildlife research and management with recent developments and examples.
  • A new online study aid – a wide variety of downloadable computer programs in the freeware packages R and Mathcad, available through a companion website. Worked examples enable readers to practice calculations explained in the text and to develop a solid understanding of key statistical procedures and population models commonly used in wildlife ecology and management.
The first half of the book provides a solid background in key ecological concepts. The second half uses these concepts to develop a deeper understanding of the principles underlying wildlife management and conservation. Global examples of real-life management situations provide a broad perspective on the international problems of conservation, and detailed case histories demonstrate concepts and quantitative analyses. This third edition is also valuable to professional wildlife managers, park rangers, biological resource managers, and those working in ecotourism.

So I love the Book there’s a lot of information so you can be hard to understand it’s even harder to understand when your teacher will not help you and decide to take personal days instead of talking to you so you understand what’s happening figuring it out yourself is kind of hard so if you have a supportive teacher you might want there help. But over all the book is very informative and the class by its self was great

I have a Phd in Wildlife Ecology and I can say with a great deal of confidence that this book is by far the best Wildlife management text I have ever read. I wish a text of this quality and comprehensive content had been available when I was teaching!!!

I had to purchase this text for a graduate class I am taking. It can be heavy on the math however, there is a book website that allows you to view the R code for any models given in the text which I think is very helpful since not all of us are proficient in R and R is going to be used more in statistics since it is a freely accessible program. The bulk of the teaching is via examples from the field.

I wish there were more pictures, I learn well from them! It has most information but I wish it had some information on adaptations to abiotic factors and reproduction.

I had to have to this for a basic wildlife course. This book is the most boring wildlife book I have ever opened. However, It is what I ordered and it was in great shape and made of good quality.

Libro che inspiegabilmente non contiene nemmeno UNA foto, nonostante quella di lupo in copertina lasci immaginare.
Per essere un libro che tratta di wildlife la pecca è imperdonabile. Da buttare nella raccolta differenziata.

3.0 out of 5 stars ... this I can conclude that there is indeed some good information in this book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2017
Having waded through this I can conclude that there is indeed some good information in this book.
The access to the graphs and tables is excellent as a teaching aid.
The book is generally well written, sadly a few type errors occur and it seems these occur in important areas making some areas ambiguous (especially if you don't already know what they mean).
The information is relatively up to date

Sadly , it is a classic example of non user friendly writing. Too often there are blocks of what amount to literature reviews, which is fine, but essentially detracts from the flow of the text.

There is a great deal of mathematics and notation (which is clearly stated on the back and very welcome as proof of concept) However, it is often poorly explained and assumes too much in depth knowledge.
At times it is not clear if the authors fully understand the maths and it feels as though they are trying to blind the reader with notation in a bid to legitimise/prove their knowledge.
I do not intend this harshly but it seems as though it has been written with pedantry and self righteous posturing of academia in mind. As though the authors were fearful of explaining too fully the concepts in case academics criticised them for it.

Sadly this makes it HUGELY REPETITIVE, TAKING OFTEN SIMPLE CONCEPTS AND MAKING THEM UNNECESSARILY COMPLICATED.

Many chapters also jump back and forth between concepts with no logical reason for doing so.
Graphs are many and varied which is good and helps to cut through some of the over information. The authors should have gone more with the less is more approach.

The book needs to decide if it is a text book or not. I don't think the authors actually decided themselves.

It is a valuable book, but it is aimed at academics and perhaps upper level under graduates, MSc and beyond. Students of a more mathematical bent may also like it.
It is not however user friendly.
