About the author
I live near Indianapolis, Indiana.
I am a lecturer in computer science at Indiana University / Purdue University - Indianapolis (Yes, that IS officially the longest university name on the planet... we call it IUPUI)
I was an army brat. I grew up in many parts of the Eastern United States and in Japan.
I've been interested in computing since the early eighties, when my brother and I took the money we were saving for a car and blew it on a TRS-80 model 1 with the built-in Japanese character set. (That machine is still in my garage. Don't tell my wife.)
My first career was as a special education teacher. I taught young adults with severe disabilities for several years. I really enjoyed my job and my students. I learned a lot about teaching through that experience.
While doing special ed, I kept my interest in computing, doing some freelance programming and writing about computer topics. Eventually, I became a lab instructor in the computer science program at IUPUI.
I moved to IUPUI as a full-time gig in 1995. Since then, I have been involved in creating a certificate of applied computer science. I have also worked on building a distributed education program. I especially love designing curricula using emerging and interesting technology and ideas.
I have taught many applied CS topics, but there is always more to learn.
Right now my focus tends to be on applied computing in programming languages, game programming, and mobile computing.
My favorite part about writing is hearing from readers. It's great when somebody sends me a link to a game or project they've written using one of my books. I'd love to get a line from you about one of my books, what you'd like to see me work on next, or just to say hi. I hope my writing feels like a conversation, and I'm looking forward to hearing from your side of the talk.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2021The author, Andy Harris, presents the material in a very easy to understand manner starting with the basics and proceeding to increasingly complex tools and designs. Probably one of the best books for beginners as well as more experienced website developers. Even for those who build websites using higher-level software, such as WordPress, this book provides insight as to what's under the covers.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2020This book was on the suggested reading list for one of my MLIS classes. This should be required reading (not suggested reading!) for anyone with little/no knowledge of website building, code, etc. Very well organized, and provides lots of details and examples. I look forward to purchasing additional Dummies books related to this topic. I would definitely recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2020I am an old school html author. (I still have a web site that uses frames.) I read that frames are now supposed obsolete. I decided that it is time for me to re-learn html by adopting html5 coding. This book has been a good source for learning the new rules. Sure, I could have just bought a wysiwyg editing program. I already did that in the past but then that company got taken over and I refuse to pay a subscription every month for a program that only gets used once a year. I prefer to know how to write the actual code so I don't need another program to create it for me. I also gain greater control over web pages with my own code. This book has been very thorough so far. (I have only read the 1st half of the 1000+ pages.) A lot of the information is already familear to me. It is going to be harder to unlearn what I already know that works. The book is well written with lots of examples to make it easy to see how it works. I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to code html5.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2021At over 1000 pages, this covers a lot of topics and for the most part seems to cover them well. This is the third edition from 2014 (not sure if there's a newer edition or not) so given the nature of technology some parts may be slightly out of date but that's no knock on this book. I bought the book out of personal interest in learning the content, so most of the material was new to me apart from HTML & CSS basics and I think the author did a great job laying out the various technologies available in web development. I took the time to type out and save many of the code samples in the book, which I recommend doing. Typing out the code helps it stick in memory better than just reading it in the book or copying & pasting from the companion website.
I've been playing around with some personal web pages using HTML/CSS/MySQL/PHP/AJAX/Javascript/JQuery, and find myself referring back to this book quite a bit in addition to the usual online searches. I think it's a good foundation to start with before picking up some of the newer books on the specific technologies that interest you.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2020There were several errors in the CSS format examples, but they are minor and can easily be overcome by the astute reader. Some of the information needed further clarification if the reader is a true CSS dummy. The W3Schools online was a great help in furthering the possibilities of CSS and goes hand-in-hand with this book as does the online website by the author. These are two URLs to bookmark and refer to frequently.
The print is both very small (maybe 9pt) and the examples are so faint that a magnifying glass is helpful to see what the coding is supposed to look like.
The text editors that are recommended are a benefit since they will show errors in the coding and even include the line number of the error.
This book is well worth the cost and one that will remain in your library as long as you are working with HTML5 and CSS3.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2014I purchased the First Edition of this book when it came out and was amazed at how much information was in the book. It's packed with basic to advanced topics, not just fluff some other massive books are filled with. I specifically purchased the book for the updated HTML5 and CSS3 material, but the JavaScript and PHP sections are very helpful too.
Be sure to check out the "About the Author", and "Acknowledgements" in the back of the book on page 1071. It seems strange the publisher choose to place it in the back in the 3rd edition.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2023It may be entitled 'for Dummies' but the author doesnt talk down to the reader, but clearly sets out the essentials im an easy to understand way
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2019This is a very thorough book covering HTML & CSS. The client side coverage is excellent, including covering image editing and hosting companies. The server side covers PHP and us slightly dated in 2019, but this technology is still in use so it remains relevant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book even for kids to learn web development!
Excellent content, and concepts are very nicely explained. My 12yr old kid is using this to learn HTML and CSS and he is able to learn from this easily with minimal guidance. Well written and beautifully compiled - 8 books in 1. Worth every penny.

Not enough explanations for code. Some mistakes in the code.
