SERVANT LEADERSHIP
FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
"Given the myriad of complex problems facing higher education, it is difficult to imagine that an administrator at any level of the institution could be effective without engaging in servant leadership. Higher education is a service industry and, consequently, this text is a must read for practicing administrators who are committed to effective leadership."
MARY LOU HIGGERSON, Ph.D., vice president for Academic Affairs and dean of the college, Baldwin-Wallace College
"Finally a thoughtful book on servant leadership with direct application to higher education. Includes many strategies for developing servant leadership in self, others, and organizations."
DR. GARY L. FILAN, executive director, Chair Academy
"With Servant Leadership for Higher Education Dan Wheeler brings the gauzy platitudes sometimes associated with servant leadership down to earth in a set of field-tested principles. I finished the book fantasizing about how much better off our colleges and universities would be if our leaders behaved like this!"
JON WERGIN, professor of educational studies, Ph.D. in Leadership & Change Program, Antioch University
"This is a must read for anyone thinking about becoming an academic leader. In the academy, it is not about command and controlit's about serving your colleagues. Dan Wheeler's book 'nails it' as nothing is more critical to leaders than success in serving their colleagues."
WALTER GMELCH, dean and professor, School of Education, University of San Francisco

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2014Many people have the mistaken impression that servant leadership means doing for others. Instead, it means removing the roadblocks so others can do for themselves and by modeling this behavior, encouraging others to do the same. The servant leader approach is perfect for higher education because by its nature, higher education is a collaborative environment. As higher education becomes more corporate, the servant leadership approach can be an important strategy to maintaining a collaborative environment between faculty and administration. It is also a powerful approach to implementing change because when everyone works together and has their needs addressed, there is more buy-in.
As someone who has a servant leadership orientation and works in higher education, I found this to be an outstanding book to explain what servant leadership involves and how it can be implemented in higher education. This book breaks the approach down into the nine principles and concludes by addressing myths associated with the style.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2020Servant leadership is imperative in today’s society. Wheeler does a great job of outlining what being a servant leader means.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2015If you are going to read just one book on leadership in higher education, this isn't a bad choice. Wheeler understands the environment and writes about leadership principles and practices with a strong ethical sense. On the other hand, if you are familiar with other books in the genre, the ideas here may seem a bit formulaic and recycled.
Wheeler begins where many others do, by pointing out that traditional notions of leadership are inappropriate for higher education. Unfortunately, the book then becomes a set of laundry-lists-with-commentary, describing valuable but perhaps rather tired features of the desired servant leadership: authenticity, humility, moral courage, etc. (chapter 2); service to others, meeting the needs of others, problem solving and responsibility-taking at all levels, etc. (chapter 3); leading through relationships with others, using informal rewards, being a powerful listener, demonstrating unconditional love....
There are two problems with this approach. First, the range of characteristics and practices is so diverse that it is hard to see how they fall into any integrated notion of 'servant leadership,' and without a serious attempt at a definition, they come across as a noble but miscellaneous hodgepodge rather than a vision or set of principles one could follow. Second, there is the paradox inherent in all descriptions of this kind. If we were capable of embodying all these principles and engaging in all the practices, we would already be great leaders. But how do we get to be authentic? How do we go about exercising moral courage? While these are great descriptors of effective leaders, they are not much use in showing us how to be that way.
There is plenty of value in reading this book. Chapter 8, for example, "Means are as important as ends," which describes the importance to many faculty of following established process in implementing change, is very useful reading for those new to a shared governance model. And I have little doubt that opening this book at any random page will likely yield something of value, a useful reminder for the day. I just came away without a clear sense of the servant leader, or a road map to becoming one.
