Editorial Reviews
Review
"I find Ottenheimer's The Anthropology of Language an extremely useful textbook as a very accessible introduction to linguistic anthropology for lower-division undergraduates. Its range and depth strikes a good balance for those first being introduced to an anthropological approach to language."

- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2024A required book for my college student’s class and much more affordable than the book store.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2014If you like to study languages like me (I have taught myself how to speak Mandarin and Korean on a fluent conversational level) then you'll love this book. Its incredibly informative in that what you need to learn about languages is finally put down into words that are easy to understand and apply. As a language tutor, I found that reading this book helped me to explain concepts easier. Especially when it comes to teaching your student how to look at every language like a new beginning and stop bringing the grammatical baggage that English native speakers always bring to learning new languages. This book is clear and concise and you will learn a lot about your native language as well as your second, third, and (if you are awesome) fourth language as well as give you the tools to pursue another language. :D
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2013This was a very great book!! Very helpful and informative! When paired with the workbook it is even more useful because even though the workbook URLs are outdated (some) the book, for the most part, actually helps you to develop an answer.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2014Dr. Ottenheimer has live. a life full of adventure and scholasticism. In this new addition, she implements her vast knowledge of linguistic anthropology and culture for the benefit of her readers. We're taken alongside her many voyages abroad and stateside within as a means of conveying the many concepts that linguistic anthropology encompasses. Her ability to convey and humanize such topics is truly unparalleled.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2015I needed this book for school and decided to try out the Kindle Edition. Well I was glad that I did! Cutting and pasting for my notes, highlighting and book marking really made it very convenient. Plus it was directly on my tablet versus a book that I would later have to worry about storing or selling. The content of the book was excellent and I loved reading the stories that the author includes. It helps to tie the content together into real life events to get a better understanding of the subject. I highly recommend this book for it's content, but especially in the Kindle Edition format.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2023Constantly refers to this text book as ‘brief description’ and constantly refers back to $132 workbook/reader. Author introduction gives the impression they do not think highly of students by using very basic student quotes. Very interesting subject, but I’m only on chapter 2 and already of the pushing of supplementary products.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2012I had to drop this class, but I like this book. I did not know Anthropology study language as well. I will take this Anthropology Lingustics again in the near future. Some of the terms takes time to absorb , but keep reading and finding examples of the terms will help understand the study of language.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2014The copy of this text has the critical thinking and problem sets removed from it. Cengage has instead left a note stating, that as the publisher, they felt these sections were unimportant to the reader and have omitted them. This is definitely a textbook, not a very good textbook, and the work sections removed make this a WORTHLESS textbook. Instead Cengage offers an electronic rental from their website in which they offer the complete book. If this is for a class, and you are expected to work from this book, DO NOT RENT and DO NOT BUY the kindle version.
