Editorial Reviews
Review
‘Outram’s The Enlightenment has proved its lasting value as a stunningly well-informed introduction to the period, attentive to current concerns - especially about gender and race - and ranging across numerous disciplines, to which this edition adds the Enlightenment’s new social science of political economy.’ Ritchie Robertson, University of Oxford
‘Happy quarter-century to Outram’s The Enlightenment. Still the indispensable one-volume introduction to eighteenth-century currents of thought and academic debate on them, this updated edition continues to surprise with its ease of manner and scope of knowledge. For students and scholars alike, Outram has always read something we’ve missed.’ James Smith, Royal Holloway, University of London

About the author

Born shortly after the end of World War II, I have researched, written and taught history in England, Ireland, France, Italy, Canada, Germany and Australia. Trained at Cambridge, I have explored the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire, the Enlightenment, the history of cultural contact, of the body, exploration, and the history of science. My last book, 'Four Fools in the Age of Reason', (University of Virginia Press, 2019) explores the culture of foolishness in early modern Germany, and its role in the making of power and knowledge.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2022There are many works on the Enlightenment. Some are turgid and others just ephemeral. This is an excellent balance addressing key topics. As with any book on a well worn topic one always could ask for more but somehow as an introduction the author had managed to not be too long or too short. Many of the issues associated with the Enlightenment are covered from legal to social and including the religious elements.
I would strongly recommend this as a first introduction to the topic.
