- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024Rosemary misses her dead husband terribly. They had worked together as a private detective agency. She is ready to turn the office into an art room when a woman from the past comes !looking for her husband to help her protect her father.
The characters are delightful and when a man is murdered and her brother under suspicion she becomes determined to use her detective skills to find the murder.
Lots of action and many twists and false leads and the murder is solved and she decides to continue the detective agency to honor and feel c!owe to her spouse.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2020A woman trying to get over her private investigator husband‘s death, takes on an investigation leading to a classic style “Country home who done it.“ The 1920 themed “mystery story line” is pretty good. Classic in there are lots of suspect, some with secrets to hide. There’s also a strong “romance story line.“ While I felt the book got a bit mired in the heroines emotions/potential romance, I would have not thought it particularly odd, except the writer either has an addiction to florid prose when it comes to friendship, or the heroine has a really over the top attachment to her best friend.
I also think it needed proofreading for continuity. Minor nits, but hurt the flow of the book and occurred often enough to stand out. Examples.... the divider between driver and passengers is up so the driver can’t hear them, then the next paragraph the driver can overhear them, then the next paragraph the divider window is slid down. Leaves the impression that the author inserted a paragraph but didn’t read the text on either side of the insertion. Or a description of gunning the engine to stop.
While somethings did bother me about the book, overall I thought it was a promising start…I will read the next book to decide is the series is my cup of tea.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2024Rosemary Lilywhite is a young widow. Her late husband, Andrew, was the original Lilywhite in Lilywhite Investigations. But, Andrew had been slowly training Rosemary to become his partner. He had faith in her abilities and he taught her well.
Rosemary’s family is well to do, in fact everyone in the story is wealthy. Except for the policeman, Max, who was Andrew’s partner when he was a policeman.
A young woman, Grace Barton, who lives not far from Rosemary’s family has come to ask for help. She found a letter which threatens her father’s life. Rosemary is ready to do a bit of light detecting on her behalf.
How hard could it be?
Rosemary’s family and friends have been invited to a party at the Barton estate. So Rosemary and her best friend, Vera, will attend and take a look and see if they can find out who wrote the threatening letter.
Then there is a murder.
Let the investigating begin.
This is a story that is a quick read. It is a true cozy mystery. The violence is not front and center. The most violence is a fist fight between Rosemary’’s brother and another young man.
All the characters are introduced and many of them may or may not be a suspect. The mystery is not a difficult one. The characters are charming and interesting.
There are villains and good guys. There are fashion tips. In short, this is a nice read.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2023I loved the audiobook version of The Case at Barton Manor. The narrator was excellent. I was hoping there were more already available in audiobook format, but I'll be switching gears to read the next book in the series because I need to know what happens next! Queen does an excellent job creating characters you want to know more about and one book just isn't enough. The mystery is fantastic and I'm looking forward to binging the next book in the series (and the next and the next). Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2024I really enjoyed this book. A page turner for sure. The characters are great.
I would recommend it.
Great author. Thank you.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2022This was quite a fun book despite the mystery being fairly easy to solve. I enjoyed the characters and the portrayal of England for the rich during the twenties. The ending seemed a bit rushed to me, but I'll definitely be looking for other books by Ms. Queen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twisty plot with lots of suspects
A brilliant friendship with a solid and believable heroine. This book highlights the shortage of men after ww1 and the strength of character needed to be a single woman in a man's world. Excellent plot and characterisation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely new series
These bright young things, and a puzzle, make for a fun read.
Well written and, unlike many whodunnits, the solution is not immediately obvious.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Am a fan of this genre.. have finished agatha Christies, ngaio Marshes Georgette heyers a long time ago so was pretty eager to start with this book with high reviews..even though wasn’t expecting exactly that level of interest from a newbie author...Can only say very much disappointed..
The author spent nearly the first one fourth of the story filling in the background with page 3 socialite type cold b!tchy females.. some of them have hearts of gold buried deep down and assorted womanisers .. some of them are to be reviled like the very married mr Barton or the loutish herbie and some are to be given great approbation:: the Teddys and the Freddys ... who I guess will in later books be given a chance to reform and marry after sowing all their wild oats 😏 .. had almost given up but things started moving somewhat after chapter 9!!
However the first major problem with this book is UTTER LACK OF ETHICS AND MORALS displayed by the amateur and the professional detective ... how can the inspector keep on passing classified information to the heroine especially knowing that she is an interested party??? Two of the main suspects are her relatives/ close friends and the disgusting man doesn’t even feel a twinge of guilt for his gross professional misconduct 🤐Then he cooly leaves saving her brother to the heroine as he is incapable of convincing his boss about a fair investigation 🙄.. really?
Then the heroine has no problem discussing the very same classified information with all and sundry.. her friends, mother , father, brother, brother in Law, tea shop owner.. including the suspects.. as I said absolutely NO ETHICS OR INTEGRITY
Then this detective business is not a solo activity but a family enterprise.. everyone and their aunt ( including all the people mentioned above) is a detective ! Difficult to swallow this absurdity
Then there were typos/editorial over sights .. a couple of people’s first name and family name kept getting misused.. in the same scene the Driver/butler could not hear what the heroine is talking with her friend .. due to the partition being up between the two seats.. next sentence he is blushing hearing about the sexual expertise of the said friend!!! What happened to the effing partition??
Further the plot about the reason for murder and the Modus operandi were vague and didn’t make much sense.. neither it was explained what exactly her drawings revealed to the heroine to come to the solution.. very vague and under developed plot..
And finally the omni observant heroine being too naive and innocent to never OBSERVE that all eligible bachelors are salivating after her most intriguing.. extremely admirable and ever lovable self was tooo cute!! Really.. again?
As I said really disappointed

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and mysterious
When Grace, a friend of Rosemary, wife of late private investigator, Andrew Lillywhite, arrives at her office trying to engage Andrew to investigate an apparent threatening letter, addressed to her father, things start to happen. With the assistance of her good friend, Vera, Rosemary decides to take the investigation on herself. At a soiree, at the home of Grace's parents, the business associate of Grace's father is found dead, shot. Unfortunately Rosemary's brother becomes the chief suspect. Can Rosemary and Vera solve the mysterious death and find the true killer. Exciting action follows and eventually all is revealed, but how?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sassy sleuthing
I don't want to give too much away, but I love how the author has the main character change her role from the beginning to the end of the storyline. The characters are very engaging, and the story is fun, leaving you wanting to know what happens next.
