BOOK #1 IN THE UNTWISTING SCRIPTURES SERIES

ADDRESSING RIGHTS, BITTERNESS, AND TAKING UP OFFENSES

Does the Bible really teach that you're supposed to
yield your rights? What's the right way to look at the issue of rights?
Have you ever been accused of being
bitter? Maybe you thought you really weren't, but how can you tell?

Is that
"root of bitterness" truly as insidious in your heart as some have suggested? How can you use other Scriptures to help you recognize it?

If you
"take up offenses" by trying to help someone who is being mistreated, are you really in danger of becoming the most bitter of people? Will you even be in danger of missing out on God's grace?

Untwisting Scriptures that were used to tie you up, gag you, and tangle your mind (Book 1 Rights, Bitterness, and Taking Up Offenses) untwists and presents the beautiful truth of God's Word, exposing sin where it needs to be revealed, and offering hope to those who most desperately need it.

Scriptures can be untwisted. You can rise up from spiritual abuse and walk in the freedom of Christ.

Review

I would give this book 10 stars because it is that good. It is a must read for anyone that went to Bill Gothard's seminars and were tied up with the false notions of "bitterness". A little book that gives a big big punch to his and other copy cats teachings on rights, anger and bitterness. ★★★★★

Rebecca Davis is a gifted writer, but her greatest gift is her heart. This book comes out of her heart for those who have been wounded and oppressed by misuse of power through scripture. It addresses some of the main twistings or lies that are used to keep the oppressed down. The truths shared in this book help set people free. It is a very important book for those coming out of oppressive systems. I highly recommend it! ★★★★★

Rebecca Davis has a clear understanding of the Word and is gifted in untwisting commonly mistaught scriptures. I have learned so much from her blog and this book. I highly recommend Untwisting Scriptures if you have been counseled in a way that added more burdens to you or additional confusion to your already foggy thinking. ★★★★★
--Danielle Marie, Amazon Reviewer

This book helps untwist some of the deceptions that keeps people bound to relationships and guilt that is not from Him. This is a bible study on the truth that will set you free to live and love yourself so you will be free to actually love others as you love yourself. ★★★★★

Rebecca Davis writes so that those who have suffered abuse (spiritual, domestic, or sexual) at the hands of Christians or pseudo-Christians can know that God is still good, He is opposed to the powerful oppressing the vulnerable, and He is mighty to save through the gentle power of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Before she wrote about spiritual abuse, Rebecca's missionary stories and biographies (one of which is an award winner) were written for families to enjoy together.

In addition to solo books, as an editor Rebecca also writes in collaboration with others who have an important story to tell.

You can follow her at her blog, where she gladly untwists Scriptures that have been used against the oppressed, https://heresthejoy.com.

I bought this book at a recent conference for women sponsored by Called to Peace Ministries. The week following the conference I read through it. In a very helpful way I was made aware that I have been affected by false teaching and misapplication of Scripture over the years. I have been reading my Bible since I was12 years old and for many years have read through the entire Bible each year. It is the most important book in the world, but sadly it is not well read and carefully studied on a personal level nor do many churches carefully teach the whole counsel of God.

My passion and love for God’s Word has grown over the years, especially in my retirement years as I have given much more time to reading, studying, memorizing and meditating on the Scriptures. I will never exhaust their comfort and rich teaching in my lifetime. It is a lifeline in a world filled with deception and darkness. Rebecca Davis is a godly teacher seeking to help us rightfully understand and apply the Word of Truth. I have read two of her series on UNTWISTING SCRIPTURES and plan to read the other three.

Very freeing information. Brings out the joy of serving Christ.

Have you been told that to serve Christ you must give up all of your rights? Has that idea ultimately been applied by demanding you surrender your rights to a human authority? Have you been taught that all bitterness is sin? Has the accusation of bitterness been used to discredit or silence you? Are you unsure if you should speak when you see injustice if you are not directly involved (take up another's offense)? This book is Scripture saturated with responses to these common arguments that are used to Bible-beat people. It is a quick easy read and set up in a style so that points can easily be referenced later.

I heard this Author on a podcast explain the Biblical difference between bitter grief and the root (source) of bitterness, and quickly ordered this book. You can forgive and still grieve. Your feelings toward hurt and injustice should not be used to shame you. This was the untwisting that I needed this year. This book gave me permission to feel and still forgive even before feelings of pain and betrayal have fully passed. The author shows from scripture how often we are seeing those who are the root of bitterness (sinning against others) accusing their victims of sinful bitterness for feeling hurt and speaking up (not a sin). This is book 1 in a book series. I am looking forward to reading the next books as well.

This book is super easy to read and understand. She starts at a good place and ends this book at a good place to start the foundation of untwisting scriptures. I can’t wait to read the others!

I am speechless and stunned (in a positive way) about this book. In fact, it's been a "stop-what-you're-doing-and-pay attention" one.

I was raised in the evangelical Christian culture - my parents were dedicated and fervent Christiansw ho lived their faith in their minds, hearts and actions. They weren't perfect, but they knew it, and when they made mistakes and had their lapses, they repented, sought God's forgiveness and continued on in their walk with the Lord. I wouldn't trade my upbringing for the world.

This is why I have felt almost physically sick over what has been going on in some parts of the evangelical church.

This is one of the best sources I have read for people who have (1) been hurt in evangelical settings (2) have maybe hurt others and (3) both Read it carefully. Take notes. See how it fits you.

This is a first in a set of three. I can't wait to start the next ones.

The issue of “bitterness” was especially good and insightful.
There is a need for all Christians to study Scripture carefully in its proper context, rather than just repeat quotes from what they have heard.
    A good read.

This first book hit so close to home, I'm almost afraid to read the other four I just ordered. These are assertions that have needed to be taught - correcting error - in the church for a long time. But apparently being a defender of the weak isn't particularly sexy. After all, who would stick his own neck out to rescue someone else. Oh, right. We see all throughout the Scriptures, as is pointed out, that Jesus is the Ultimate Defender of the Weak. We must go and do likewise, even if it is scary. Thank you, Rebecca, for your scholarly treatment of this subject and your moral courage to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

The author does a fine job of identifying & untwisting scriptures that have been misused by various Christian teachers and/or authors and presenting her well researched arguments for what she believes the scriptures to mean. She identifies the dangers of particular teachings related to "yielding rights", "bitterness", & "taking up offenses". I found her descriptions of three categories of bitterness particularly insightful: 1) Source of bitterness, 2) Grieving bitterness, 3) Destructive bitterness. It's a short, but important book shedding light on some of the false teachings that have contributed to abuses in churches, Christian organizations and homes.

If you have been part of very conservative or controlling or cult like Christian religious group; this book is essential to your well being and getting out of the webs of deceit woven by individuals that wanted power over you. Absolutely essential. Well written; and well scriptural based. Lots of scripture to support or disprove certain beliefs.

So grateful for this book and the rest of the series too. Rebecca does a wonderful job at breaking down teachings that are largely just accepted without question in Christendom because they sound pious or have come out of the mouths of people trying to preserve their image and minimise the (appropriate) emotional fallout of very horrible things. Thank you Jesus.
