From the Author

This book was the result of conversations among the coaches on the Eastern Missouri District Committee of the National Speech & Debate Association. As new coaches regularly asked us how to become a coach, we realized that most of us had never been a "new coach" because we grew up in the activity as students. As the Program Director of the St. Louis Urban Debate League, I was also responsible for helping new coaches navigate the world of competitive debate. Thus, I spent time reflecting on and collaborating with some of my peers on the essential needs of new coaches. This book seeks to address the questions that beginning coaches have about the activity. How do I start a team? How do I recruit students to the team? What should my role be? How do I teach something that I've never had experience with? What should I be doing in the classroom or at practice? How do I prepare my students for their first tournament?

Shawn F. Briscoe began his journey in academic debate more than 30 years ago. He is an ardent believer in the educational merits of interscholastic forensics. To that effect, he has authored various articles for Principal Leadership, Education Next, and Rostrum. He believes the activity promotes authentic learning of concepts at the heart of the standard curriculum, while doing so in a unique environment that is competitive, cooperative, social, and extremely fun!

Shawn has coached and taught at both the high school and the collegiate levels; in multiple debate, speech, and interpretation of literature events; at schools across the country; and on local, regional, national, and international circuits. His philosophy that the activity should primarily be about promoting growth and education, while secondarily being a fun activity for the participants has proven competitively successful.

Shawn is the Assistant Director of the Seawolf Debate Program at the University of Alaska Anchorage, where he also serves as the State Coordinator for Drama, Debate, & Forensics for the Alaska School Activities Association. He occasionally teaches communications courses online as an adjunct professor for Glendale Community College in Arizona. He also operates a private business (My Speech Resource, LLC) dedicated to helping working professionals/groups achieve their public speaking goals.
