Profiting from Foresight: A 7-step method to capitalize on the emerging trends of the future Paperback – October 31, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
Profiting from Foresight engages you to create a new competitive edge for the dynamic times ahead. Though businesses, markets, even industries face becoming dated or obsolete, you can thrive with foresight. Discover new sources of revenue growth and future opportunities unique to you. And learn proven steps to innovate superior solutions while assuring a high return on investment. The book draws from 30 years’ first-hand experience guiding dozens of products and businesses from concept to launch, generating hundreds of millions in revenue.
It's a common misconception, but the usual way of planning has a major pitfall - extrapolating past trends far into the future. The problem is that revenues and other indicators are backward looking, measuring the effects of previous actions. When we assess these effects, we are facing the past, not the future as we need to. The result is an outlook that understates the magnitude and velocity of new threats and opportunities. Eventually, this shows up on our doorstep as a crisis in lost sales and declining profits.
We all need to take the initiative now to meet tomorrow’s foreseeable new demands. Our society is rapidly implementing “smart” technologies, shifting in its demographic makeup, and adopting radically different cultural norms to name a few factors reshaping the landscape. Profiting from Foresight guides to enhance your products, services, and business model to compete in this exciting yet challenging era, with examples in healthcare, education, technology, entertainment, and other areas.
Experts in entrepreneurship and innovation, including program directors at major universities, recommend the book for being as practical as it is insightful. For executives in fast-paced competitive markets Profiting from Foresight is an essential planning resource you will refer to time and again.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2019Profit from Foresight is a must-read business book. If I can say one thing about this book without giving out the entire details here, it is, if you don’t innovate you perish. Scott breaks down the methods to capitalize on the emerging trends in simple words without the academic jargon. Anyone who is thinking of starting a business or needing to innovate their business must read this book asap.
J. Fulgencio, Ph.D. Learning Solutions Consultant, and Instructor.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2017Scott Barnett’s tome is a well-researched and insightful work on one of the most contemporary business challenges faced by every executive today. He takes the difficult subject of business innovation and manages to break it into actionable components that are easy to understand and follow. While it could have been just another academic commentary on the subject, the author instead provides a practical step-by-step guide to implementing an otherwise abstract but critically necessary function in all forward-leaning organizations. An easy read, I would recommend this book to all managers and executives who want to compete proactively, but it is also a suitable text for institutional graduate programs in business or marketing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2018I am the co-founder of a strategic innovation consulting firm. We have been doing innovation strategy, futuring and opportunity discovery work for 17 years. I found Profiting from Foresight to be a very well written, very readable and very rich tour through the innovation landscape. I would highly recommend it to new students of the art and science of innovation. A slight warning to those who might think that the book is mostly about futuring. It certainly addresses that topic but its much more broad in scope. For more experienced innovators, you might find some of the content toward the end - using game theory and a Bayesian approach to market sizing - to be interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2018A very useful book for ideation and idea screening processes. It is simple, written in an accessible way and has a whole set of useful techniques for developing initial ideas and for assessing their value. I particularly liked the "non" ideation technique, the examples of ideation journals and thoughts on high tech journaling and Fermi method for calculating market size. A useful book for students, entrepreneurs and managers who are involved in trying to develop business opportunities.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2018An excellent book on feasibility analysis, especially for executives and graduate students. Clear, short and easy to read. The book's strength is in its mixes - the mix of idea generation and idea validation, the mix of qualitative and quantitative, and the mix of old and new styles of marketing research. Look for off-road thinking and Fermi analyses!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2018Barnett's Foresight provides a pragmatic and approachable methodology for installing and acting on your strategy in a variety of arenas. Exhaustively researched and highly readable, Barnett takes on complicated concepts and distills them down to their most fundamental and important elements. Beyond the academic and business concepts tackled in Foresight, the book contains a number of life lessons and instruments that can be adopted to whatever situation one encounters themselves in.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2018I found Scott Barnett's book to be an excellent framework for analyzing what is working and what needs to be fixed in businesses today. His "7-Step Foresight Method" is presented very logically and is intuitively easy to grasp and think about applying. I found his numerous personal examples to be very valuable in clarifying and supporting his approaches. I'm in the process of applying his "7-Step Foresight Method" to my business now.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2018I am a life long entrepreneur/intrapreneur and now a professor of entrepreneurship. After reading Scott's approachable book, I've decided to use it as one of the references for a course I'm teaching. Profiting from Foresight is a good complement to more academic texts because it is clear, concise, has excellent idea provoking questions, and has useful quantitative tools not commonly used.
