- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2018Crack the Case is a great way to get ready for case interviews. The book takes you from understanding what case interviews are, through the important behavioral aspects of an interview, and finally through mastering the various types of cases (the vast majority of the book). It also provides various timelines that you can use to tailor your case prep, depending on how much time you have.
David Ohrall splits up the cases into different types - Market Sizing, Case Starts, Mini Cases, and Full Business cases. As someone who has gone through the process of learning how to case before, it was useful to start at the beginning, and review each of these. Each builds on top of the previous ones, which helped me to both not forget what I had just learned, and to also further understand the concepts.
I'm pleasantly surprised at the amount of focus that the book puts on understanding business situations rather than memorizing frameworks. I would highly recommend the book to anyone looking to learn how to case interview.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2017I'm a UCLA Anderson student going through consulting case interviews, so I of course have all 3 of the important ones but I found David Ohrvall's "Crack the Case System" to be the most bang for my buck -- great advice, really helpful resources (online case practice, well-done handouts & printables, etc), and approaches to case interviews that don't make you a robot. If you are looking to get into management consulting, I suggest getting this book FIRST. (Marc & Victor's are good too, but I wish I spent my time reading Ohrvall's first.)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2015The book is easy to read, short and to the point yet comprehensive and covers all the topics needed for a good preparation. The homework/exercises mentioned in the book are a very good way to practice your skills and understand where you need to work on. The book guides you through the different things that you need to prepare and stresses the importance of understanding how to solve the case and evaluate that understanding through practice. If used in conjunction with the videos on their website, I would give it 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2019I purchased the book after going to one of the author's seminars. He is a fantastic coach– down to earth and realistic about how firms approach these interviews. Maybe my only complaint is an abundance of silly acronyms, but hey if that helps you, then it works.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2017Eh, about 25% of the book is useful. The rest, is mediocre.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2016Great book to read and learn from; Ohrvall does a masterful job in crafting the content that covers everything required to be successful in a case interview - the behavioural component, case prompts, case structures/frameworks and the different sub-parts to a full case. All of these aspects were really helpful to me and I I highly recommend the book to everyone thinking about a career in consulting.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2016Pritty Good case book. A little different way of looking at frameworks, and perhaps a bit over usage of attempted proprietary names, systems and frameworks as well. But a nice additional book to through into your consulting training. Also useful if you are prepping for Bain specifically.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2021I don't think this book is very helpful for modern day cases. It didn't help me with structuring as much as I was hoping for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it. David is THE GURU every person willing to succeed in case interviews needs to learn from
From all the books of case prep that I have used - and I read and practiced with five - this is the book that really explains in full detail how to prepare cases correctly, and helps teaching the right behaviors. First, it provides a glimpse of the whole recruiting process for consulting firms, then, it concisely and precisely helps to prepare for the behavioral part of the interviews, and lastly, it prepares you for the case interviews in a very dynamic and catchy way. For case prepping, the methods and frameworks stated in this book are super easy to follow and remember - they really get stuck in your memory -, and from then on it is super easy to put the knowledge into practice with the vast case database David has in his website. 5 stars is not enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars A personal coach in print!
This book is undoubtedly the best resource I have seen so far! As compared to other options out there, it actually stimulates people to think, rather than to become the classic “case interview copies”. I guess, just as any other method, it requires a time investment and consistency. That, however, links me to the other aspect that I love about this book! It does all the job for you! The author actually suggests you a preparation plan depending on how much time you have available! I'd 100% recommend this to any serious candidate!
