The Anglican Way: A Guidebook Paperback – April 1, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
A Methodist pastor, Reverend Robert Pelfrey, wrote this about the book. We think he sums it up well:
The best thing about The Anglican Way is how it covers a broad sweep of life in the Anglican Way without sacrificing the depth that should naturally come with a book about Christian living (though, tragically, all too often does not). Are there books that cover more Anglican history and theology? Yes. Are there books that include more Anglican prayers and liturgy? Of course. Are there books that more completely discuss the particularities and intricacies of the Anglican tradition? Perhaps (though not many).
But is there any book anywhere that covers all of these things -- Anglican history, theology, distinctives, prayers and liturgies, and many other aspects of the balance and complexities of the Anglican Way -- all in one winsome, personal, and very practical volume? I feel sure in saying that there is not.
The Anglican Way is a book born of passion and a lifetime of devotion. McKenzie is obviously both highly knowledgable of, and deeply committed to his subject matter. Other traditions would do well to have such a voice. Regardless of one's background or denominational affiliation, there is much here that is instructional...and inspirational.
More Praise for The Anglican Way
"The Anglican Way is an immensely helpful introduction to Anglicanism. By contrasting the seeming polarities, Thomas McKenzie helps readers to understand the richness -- and the seeming contradictions -- of this extraordinary Way of being a Christian. The writing is practical and accessible and the fruit of significant pastoral engagement."
- The Most Reverend Robert Duncan, Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America
"At a time when a great many people are discovering the Anglican way of Christian discipleship, there is a tremendous need for resources that lay out what this involves. Thomas McKenzie offers just that in this excellent introduction. He supplies us with a clear overview that provides the newcomer to Anglicanism and the experienced practitioner with numerous valuable insights. I am therefore delighted to commend The Anglican Way warmly."
- The Very Reverend Dr. Justyn Terry, Dean and President of Trinity School for Ministry
"The Anglican way of worshipping God and following Jesus is beautiful and effective. But some guidance is needed along the first steps on that way. In The Anglican Way, Thomas McKenzie is an reliable and relatable guide. I commend The Anglican Way to all those who are exploring an Anglican Church."

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2021I’m not Anglican, but I’ve always been somewhat fascinated with liturgical, high-church worship (my congregation is very much low-church). This guy is an Anglican pastor in Nashville. I heard him in an interview on a Gospel-centered YouTube channel I follow and decided I’d read the book he wrote about modern day Anglicanism. In it he manages to, in easily understood terminology, condense the vast spectrum of detail that could fill volumes into what appears to be a fairly well-done nutshell.
He pointedly avoids much discussion about Henry VIII and the split with Rome that the Church of England is most known for, preferring to spend most of the book discussing the doctrine and practices of today’s modern Anglican congregation, and though I’d love to read more about the historical aspect, I really enjoyed the fact that he stayed focused on the here-and-now as far as his church is concerned.
I won’t be switching to Anglicanism any time soon but after reading this I think I’d feel very comfortable visiting an Anglican Church to worship. Religion and theology is probably not everyone’s cup of tea but this book is a decent compendium on Anglicanism, and like a good sermon, it’s to the point and keeps you awake and engaged.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2014Reading this book was like having a relaxed conversation with a very knowledgeable friend. It is easy to read and understand, but covers a wide range of topics relating to Anglican worship. I thought the "Compass Rose" explanations were very helpful, and the book answered some specific questions I had about the leadership structure of the church, ordination, and Calvinism/Arminianism. Some of the explanations were more simplistic than I needed (as someone who is already a Christian, just coming from a different tradition), but I imagine they would be helpful for someone new to the Christian faith entirely. I found particularly helpful a section at the end about choosing an Anglican church. The author relates his own experience in choosing a church on an extended trip, and his reasons for his choice were instructional to me. (Hint: It didn't have to do with who had the most children's activities!) I enjoyed the book very much, and will refer to it topically in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2020This book is incredibly easy to read, kind, and helpful. As someone who has been, you might say, on the Canterbury trail for many years without belonging to an Anglican Church until this last year, I found that McKenzie’s description of the compass rose well articulated the generous meeting place of the paradoxes central to following Christ that I’ve long been seeking.
I wish this book more robustly interrogated the Anglican Church’s complicity in colonialism and racism. I felt like the version of history I was being handed was a bit too rose-tinted, focusing on particularly positive Anglicans like William Wilberforce instead of more fully and honestly accounting for the role power and privilege have played in the expansion of the church often at the expense of many.
This is a gentle introduction that encourages as much as it informs. I’m grateful it exists.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2018Great overview about The Anglican Way if you are interested in reading a very wide overview of the traditions. I thought this was a great primer in what it means to be a practicing Anglican, especially for the 21st century. Thomas McKenzie's writing style is very engaging as well! I would highly recommend this book if you are wondering about the liturgical methods of practice as well: Anglicans, Presbyterians, Lutherans, etc seem to practice a more liturgical form of worship (call and response prayers, Eucharist vs communion, preaching style, etc.) are all unique from mainline Evangelical churches. Overall, this book was a great blessing and gift for me as I'm exploring what it means to be a Christian who values tradition!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2025Book was in in great condition and delivered promptly.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2018As a writer, I am very impressed with how clearly and without religious jargon the author explains what it means to be Anglican. I'm not Anglican. I just wanted to better understand what McKenzie calls "The Anglican Way." This book does not go down the rabbit hole of trying to convince or convert you. That doesn't seem to be McKenzie's purpose. He simply states the facts, including the interesting history of the church.
I think I'd rather be a part of a church I understand, whose doctrine I might not 100% embrace, than spend my life in a murky or shifting church environment where anything goes or with my head in the doctrinal sand. Read this book, and quickly understand what you are getting in the Anglican way of things.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2021I will be marrying a Scottish man raised in the Anglican Way. I was raised Southern Baptist. I chose this book to obtain an overall understanding of the Anglican Way, specifically the Biblical teachings and values. I believe that a wife must allow her husband to be the spiritual leader of the family. Therefore, I was lead by the Holy Spirit to seek the truth about the Anglican belief. The author did an excellent job of providing facts, his opinions and cautions which I greatly appreciate and admire his integrity. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking the truth about the Gospel of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2024I learned more about the Anglicans from this book than from the to be a christian anglican catechism. Which only explained basic christian beliefs and not much of anything anglican other than a sentence or two. This book I highly recommend if you want to learn more about anglican and their way to christ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
Thomas McKenzie has written an excellent introduction to Anglicanism. I leant a lot through thus book and am now more confident that I know what all the elements of e.g. an Eucharist are as well as the history of the Anglican Communion and many other things.
If you're thinking of joining an Anglican church but want to know more about it before hand or even after joining, this book will probably tell you all you need to know.
