About the Author

Wally P is the author of Back to Basics--The Alcoholics Anonymous Beginners Meetings and How to Listen to God--A Guide for Successful Living Through the Practice of Two-way Prayer. He is the originator of the Back to Basics Beginners Meetings, which have grown to more than 2,500 groups, and produced more than 150,000 recoveries since its reintroduction into the Twelve-Step community in 1997. This original 12-Step meeting format was a phenomenal success during the 1940 s and 1950 s, but had become an all but lost piece of history until Wally rediscovered it.

Wally started his 12-Step spiritual journey on October 30,1988. The following year, his sponsor told him, "If you don't know where we came from, you'll never know what a miracle this program truly is." Wally took this challenge to heart and set out to learn all he could about the early days of the Twelve Step Movement.

In the spring of 1993, Wally was in Washington, DC conducting research for his first book, But, for the Grace of God, which dealt with the explosive growth of the Twelve-Step movement in the 1940 s. While sorting through some archival materials, he came across a 20-page pamphlet, published in 1944, which described in detail how one of the local groups was taking newcomers through the Twelve Steps in four one-hour sessions. In his subsequent travels throughout the United States, Wally found many reprints of this pamphlet along with various formats for conducting Beginners Meetings. In addition, he interviewed more than one hundred "old-timers" who had recovered in the 1940 s. Many told him the Beginners Meetings had saved their lives, and they were disappointed when the meetings were replaced with other formats in the 1960 s and 1970 s.

Wally researched the Beginners Meetings for two more years. Then in the fall of 1995, Wally s spiritual advisor challenged him to stop talking about the four one-hour sessions and start doing something about them.

He said, "Wally, if you're ever going to learn how to fly, you have to get out of flight school and climb into the plane." This was a scary proposition for someone who had a phobia about speaking in public. But Wally walked through the fear and started conducting the Beginners Meetings.

But, for the first year, Wally "flew the plane" right into the ground. Even though he thought he was being true to the original program, he had inadvertently incorporated some material from the 1970 s into the Beginners Meetings, and as a result, he wasn t seeing the recovery rates that had been achieved by the Twelve Step pioneers.

Then in March of 1996, Wally met James Houck. At the time, James was 90 years old and had been a sober member of the Oxford Group for sixty-one years. Bill W. and Dr. Bob S. also were members of the Oxford Group before they founded Alcoholics Anonymous in 1939. James was the last person alive who had attended Oxford Group meetings with Bill W. and knew, from first hand experience, the spiritual roots and the fundamental principles of the "Big Book" and the original Twelve Step program.

James provided Wally with three missing concepts from the original program that allowed him to successfully "fly the plane." They were: (1) the verbal Fourth Step (moral inventory), (2) the expanded Ninth Step that included forgiveness as well as restitution, and (3) the written Eleventh Step (prayer and meditation). He supplied Wally with a four-page pamphlet, written in 1938 by a person who had attended Oxford Group meetings with Dr. Bob. This pamphlet, titled "How to Listen to God," provided clear, concise directions on how to conduct two-way prayer.

Since that eventful meeting in 1996, Wally and James have been traveling across the United States carrying the message of the Twelve Step pioneers at Back to Basics and How to Listen to God seminars. They have personally taken over 15,000 people through the Twelve Steps and have witnessed countless miracles of recovery al

Wally P. is the author of "Back to Basics - The Alcoholics Anonymous Beginners' Meetings", "How to Listen to God - Overcoming Addiction Through Practice of Two-way Prayer", and "Back to the Basics of Recovery - How to Take the Twelve Steps 'quickly and often'." He is the originator of the Back to Basics Beginners' Meetings, which have grown to more than 2,200 groups, and produced more than 120,000 recoveries since its reintroduction into the Twelve-Step community in 1997. This "original" 12-Step meeting format was a phenomenal success during the 1940's and 1950's, but had become an all but lost piece of history until Wally rediscovered it.

But, for the first year, Wally "flew the plane" right into the ground. Even though he thought he was being true to the "original" program, he had inadvertently incorporated some material from the 1970's (specifically, the three and four column Fourth Step inventory) into the Beginners' Meetings, and as a result, he wasn't seeing the recovery rates that had been achieved by the Twelve Step pioneers.

Then in March of 1996, Wally met James H. At the time, James was 90 years old and had been a sober member of the Oxford Group for sixty-one years. Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith also were members of the Oxford Group before they founded Alcoholics Anonymous in 1939. James was the last person alive who had attended Oxford Group meetings with Bill Wilson and knew, from first hand experience, the spiritual roots and the fundamental principles of the "original" Twelve Step program.

James provided Wally with three missing concepts from the "original" program that allowed him to successfully "fly the plane." They were: (1) the verbal Fourth Step (Moral Inventory), (2) the expanded Ninth Step that included forgiveness as well as restitution, and (3) the written Eleventh Step (Prayer and Meditation). They have taken over 10,000 people through the Twelve Steps and have witnessed countless miracles of recovery along the way.

As Wally describes his work, "It's all about saving lives. Back to Basics takes us back to the 'original' program that produced a 50-75% recovery rate. We are seeing similar results today for those who are willing to stay with the Beginners' Meetings for 90-180 days. Many, who had given up all hope of ever recovering, have found the answer to their problems in these four one-hour sessions."

This book is amazing. Now that I discovered this book, I am using it to take my sponsees through the steps. They love it! The book is small, yet mighty! The first chapter is dedicated to educating the reader of why this method worked for so many historically. The following chapters are full of suggestions of how to take newcomers through the steps in four 1 hour meetings. The author takes the time to cite the exact paragraph and lines in the big book to find the information being reviewed. It's simple, yet genius, and had a wild success rate in the 1940s.

I am grateful that Wally P. wrote this book.
I had the pleasure of meeting Clarence Snyder (home brewmeister) in 1982. I was a scared newcomer and I hardly knew the way this program works. He expanded on Dr. Bob's sponsorship style. It was simple to understand. A written list of the old "steps" is on page 262 of the 4th edition Big Book. They were used universally prior to Bill Wilson's book, known as the 12x12.
While I understand the critics who say this isn't "Conference Approved", I believe that AA as a whole could benefit from the use of this book because of the wealth of information, the history of AA, and the utter simplicity of a 4 session jolt.
There are people who have taken this outline along with the Big Book and have started working with others within weeks of coming into the program.
At first, I was skeptical. I always am with new concepts. I found nothing in the B2B book that ran at odds to the Big Book.
As it's said, "...nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics. It works when other activities fail".
    This is useful and thorough.

I am buying a second copy to replace the one I gave away.

I have been attending AA meetings since the late 1980s. Generally what you find in most meetings is people telling war stories about past misadventures and whining about their current personal problems, and very little is mentioned about the program of recovery and the solution to the obsessive thinking the alcoholic and addict suffer from. In 2017 I was introduced to the Back to Basics meeting at a local Alano Club, and to attend you must go through the steps, which is the very process that alleviates the mental illness dubbed "alcoholism." It has been the absolute most helpful meeting I have ever attended in the 35 plus years I have attended AA meetings. I highly recommend it if you have never worked the steps, and have been going to meetings and find yourself wondering why you're depressed, and cannot sleep due to anxiety, and can't seem to stay stopped when it comes to alcohol and/or drugs. Doing the steps is the solution for the real, authentic alcoholic!

Have been using this as a step study guide for my sponsees and their sponsees for well over 15 years.
The idea of getting a working knowledge of the steps and helping people is what I’ve taken away from this.
Would love the idea of “Beginners Meetings” being reinstated in its original form shown here. Perfect reason to highlight my Big Book.
It certainly won’t be the last time I go thru the steps for myself and with others (god willing) and this gives my mind the working process to practice these steps and build upon them as the originators had wanted (vision for you).
    In love and Service

One afternoon over at my sponsor's house he began reading out loud from this book. It almost immediately perked my interest! I don't know how many times I've read the first 164 pages from the BB but it is a LOT. This was different in that for the most part "Back to Basics", and it's constant referring back to the Big Book, seemed to make the steps "flow" (to me) like never before. Right away I experienced a feeling of hope and serenity that I hadn't experienced since the 80's and early 90's.

A VERY quick history. I'm 60 now and am an addict and alcoholic. I was clean from 1980 to sometime in 1985, started using for a couple of months, and got clean again later in 1985 and went back "out" in 1994. Both periods of sobriety were a result of going to AA and NA meetings, working with sponsors, and working up through Step 5 (actually only Step 3 the first 5 years). And yes....I KNOW it is a 12-step program. So from '94 until last year it has been in and out---in and out---as good as dead many, many times. Countless hospitals, nut wards, trashing my life as well as the lives of others around me---ad infinitum. Since I found this book and used it as a 'tool', the big book being #1, I have worked ALL 12 steps and have finally had the spiritual awakening that the 12th step refers to. Speaking for myself only "if it works don't fix it"! I'm not in the debate business nor do I pretend to fully understand the 12 traditions. I AM in the "results" business however and will be eternally grateful for having been steered in the direction of this book.
