About the author

Marilyn Burns is a highly respected mathematics educator. For more than 50 years, Marilyn has taught children, led professional development sessions, spoken at conferences, contributed to professional journals, written more than a dozen books for children, and created more than 20 professional development resources for teachers and administrators. Marilyn continues to teach regularly in elementary classrooms, finding the experience essential to developing and testing new ideas and materials.
In 1984, Marilyn founded Math Solutions Professional Development, an organization dedicated to the improvement of math instruction in Grades K-8. Working with a highly qualified team of in-service leaders, Marilyn offered specialized courses to teachers and administrators nationwide.
Soon after, Marilyn began writing and publishing to further support teachers, and provide districts with the resources they needed to implement in-depth and long-lasting change in their schools. Her book, About Teaching Mathematics, has been widely used for pre-service and in-service teachers. Her series of resources include Math, Literature, and Nonfiction; Teaching Arithmetic; Lessons for Algebraic Thinking; and A Collection of Math Lessons.
In 1991, Marilyn was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the Bank Street College of Education in New York.
In 1996, Marilyn received the Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award from the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics for her influence on mathematics education. The nominators took special note of Marilyn’s humor and compassion, saying: “Few professionals have touched and inspired so many math educators. She has taught us several important lessons. . . . We must treat teachers with respect, honesty, and a thoughtful vision. We must turn to student work to make sense of student understanding and achievement.”
In 1997, Marilyn received the Louise Hay Award for Contributions to Mathematics Education from the Association for Women in Mathematics.
In collaboration with Scholastic in 2007, Marilyn developed Do The Math, a 13-module intervention program that focuses on Number and Operations. Do The Math targets addition and subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions. In 2011, Marilyn developed Do The Math Now!, extending Do The Math to serve students in grades 6 and up. In 2012, working with a team of Math Solutions colleagues, Marilyn developed a web-based formative assessment tool suitable for grades 5 and up, Math Reasoning Inventory (MRI), funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Also in 2012, Marilyn and Scholastic developed Math Reads, a program that helps teachers use children’s literature for teaching mathematics.
Marilyn continues to bring her messages directly to children and is the author of more than ten children’s books, including the best-selling The I Hate Mathematics! Book and The Book of Think. She launched Marilyn Burns Brainy Day Books for Scholastic with The Greedy Triangle; there are now five books in the series, including Spaghetti and Meatballs for All.
In 2010, Marilyn was inducted into the Educational Publishing Hall of Fame by the Association of Educational Publishers.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2015I have reviewed a lot of homeschooling math curricula and 'living books'. We have a few good puzzle and problem solving books, and we also really like Life of Fred, but "About Teaching Mathematics" is going to make a great spine! Now, I feel like our math program is complete.
1. Broad and thorough, covering all all concepts K-8.
2. Easy to read, not an excess of information that can tend to weigh us home-schoolers down. This is written for elementary teachers who, as the author said, aren't always comfortable teaching math. There is some classroom guidance that is easy enough to skip.
3. There are a lot of fantastic sample problems for each concept.
4. Trustworthy, quality. Everything 'rings true' to me. Approaches math as more than computation and exercises. This was surprisingly hard to find for homeschooling.
Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2010My daughter is homeschooled . I did o.k. in school--But math for me got alot harder after 5th grade. I really needed a book that would give me info. on not only WHAT to teach but, HOW to teach. This book is going to be such a big help for me. My daughter was in the talented & gifted program at her old school. I want to make sure that she keeps on getting the straight A's that she was getting. This book takes some of the pressure off of me by giving me ideas, activities, and (really important to me) ways to assess my daughter's understanding of new concepts. Because if she doesn't understand it, she will in no way excel. Anyone that homeschools, that didn't get straight A's in math will benefit from this book. I paid $38 for this book and after reading it I would have paid alot more! Marilyn Burns is great!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2004Marilyn Burns' 23 years' experience teaching math is found in this great resource book. The first section is organized in NCTM strands: measurement, probability and statistics, geometry, logic, patterns and functions, and number. The second section (a little less than half the book) is about teaching arithmetic: number concepts, place value, addition and subtraction, mulitplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percents. Each concept has whole class lessons, independent activities (menu), and assessing understanding.
This is a teacher resource, not a curriculum book. Burns' approach is half-way in between the two poles of math education: algorithmic math and conceptual math. Her point of view is "practical," with the teacher in mind.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2009A gem that helps students acquire math understanding! Fun games that are easily produced, help children build their own conceptual knowledge of math so they can apply it to real-life situations.
I'd throw out every math text book ever created & use this instead! We'd have a country of children with much stronger math skills!
I use this book a lot in my teaching! It, along with De Walle's book, are my mentors & partners in giving my students conceptual success!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2013The book was required for a Master's methods class and as such covered basics including lots of activities.
However, many of the activities seemed more like eyewash to impress parents and principles instead of getting to the point and moving along through the curriculum. Were I to use this kind of 'entertaining' lessons, I would never finish the required material in a year. Sadly, teaching has degenerated into this kind of 'activity and entertaining' instead of fundamentals.
I would never have purchased the book if I had reviewed it in a bookstore beforehand. There are many better.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2015This is an awesome book. Great for an elementary school teachers will lots of math activities and reason why we need to try to reach every student. Everyone can be good at math if we focus on reaching them the way they need.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2014I use the book daily and when I prepare my lesson plans. It is filled with plenty of ideas and resources.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2007This is a timeless treasure of mathematical understandings generated by Marilyn Burns and her associates. These activities, coupled with hands-on training for teachers, can make a tremendous difference in the mathematical understanding of elementary and early middle school teachers. Most important in this edition are the addition of Burns' revised thinking on Teaching Arithmetic (part 3), and her compilation of discussions for 40 activities (part 4). These two additions have rounded this meaningful math resource into a powerful tool for on-going staff development.
