- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2022I was unable to upload pictures of the book. I will try later.
The book arrived quickly but l have Prime.
The book was delivered in good condition. I like the fact it is spiral bound.
At the beginning of the book, it gives a brief history of the harp, hand placement and music theory.
The book can be used on a variety of harps just not folk harps.
Then, you get into the nuts and bolts of the book.
The lessons are progressive in nature. After, the lesson, you get to practice some music!
Towards the end of the book, it talks about changing strings and basic harp care.
I would suggest to find a teacher who can review the lessons with you. Practice each section several times. I don't think there is any substitute.
I will buy more books from Sylvia in the future.
I hope this helps!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2024I really liked this - not so much for the actual instruction (which is quite good) but for the songs included. She does a wonderful job transcribing and includes many songs that are fun to play. I bought a couple of her other books for this reason.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2010I've learned to play a variety of musical instruments, primarily on my own, so I was excited to find a book purporting to help me learn folk harp without a teacher. This book has been very good so far, although I have had to supplement my knowledge with some digging on the internet, particularly when it comes to tuning, hand position, and using the sharping levers. I like the pace of the book. It doesn't spend an overly long time on basic excercises and you get to plunge right in to playing simple songs ... and they're different than the same old "yankee doodle" songs that most books make you wade through before getting to the "real" songs (the ones that sound impressive when you play them for your friends). I'm not sure how well I would have done with this book if I had not already been familiar with reading music, though. It does go over the basics, but it quickly moves into reading two staffs simultaneously, something that can be challenging for people that are just starting to learn to read music. The excercises that are included are very helpful for developing finger coordination in preparation for new skills that you will need in upcoming songs, so everything is very well targeted to work together. I will say that some of the hand-drawn music notes can be a little bit hard to read (but not impossible). Also, some of the fingering is very strange to me. That could just be because I have been a pianist for so many years. I just go through the song a few different times and choose a fingering structure that feels natural to me, and just ignore her suggestions on this. For folk song enthusiasts, this book is a veritable treasure trove, containing both well-known favorites and plenty of lesser-known melodies that you will love. I look forward to finishing this book and being able to choose from some of Sylvia's many other songbooks arranged for folk harp. Oh, one other note: I am playing with a harp that contains 3 full octaves; this book does call for about 4 or 5 notes below my lowest note ... something that could have been helpful to know when choosing what harp to purchase. I will be buying one with additional strings in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2023This book is excellent. It's clear, logical, easy to follow and in days you'll able to play simple tunes of real music, much more than just nursery rhymes. I'd highly recommend this book. It was recommended to me by the person who built my harp. I can play guitar and ukulele so had some experience with music and stringed instruments, but even if you didn't, this book would still work extremely well. If you want to learn the harp, this is the book to get.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2022I love this book. It is very detailed and comprehensive. The only complaint I have is, I don’t know the songs very well, so I don’t know if I am playing to sing right. I find myself looking them up on YouTube to listen to them.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2019The book begins with a note "a special note for pianists and other musicians" which warns against rushing through the learning process, and breezing through the fundamentals. I am exactly the person that note was written for—a pianist of 25+ years with a huge ego—and as I was looking through the book I thought, this is baby music! This is the stuff I was playing when I was 6! So I grabbed my harp and blitzed through all the lame little tunes and trivial melodies, hammering away at the strings, pulling and clenching, tensed and messy. Easy.
Then, I got to Shenandoah, almost 90% of the way through the book. Her transcription is full of 4-finger block chords in the right hand, meant to be rolled, and a simple left hand accompaniment. Try as I might I couldn't brute force my way through this. I tried and tried, but I ended up pulling something in my middle finger. My shoulder hurt because I was tensing up. My cat started shedding, my plants started shriveling. Sylvia's prescient words echoed in my ear.
So I went back to the beginning. Worked on Twinkle Twinkle and Yankee Doodle, watching my hands, relaxing and closing fingers completely. And a couple months later, Shenandoah came to my fingers, rapturous and easily.
Close your dang fingers into your dang palm.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2020I haven't finished all of the lessons yet, but I am pleased with the book so far. One thing that I was really happy to find out is that you do not need levers for any of the music in this book. Since I am learning, I did not get levers on my harp. I would have been interested in the version that comes with a DVD, had I known it was available. I like how technique is explained. Looking forward to progressing through the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELENTE PRODUCTO!

5.0 out of 5 stars
