About the author

I'm a biologist who uses robots to study animals. Counter-intuitive, right? How can you study life by studying machines? It gets better -->
I'm interested in how long-extinct species may have evolved. The trouble is that dead fossils tell no tales: their behavior isn't preserved in the rocks! That's where robots come in. We design a special class of robots, called biorobots, to mimic and simplify animals. We build biorobots to be autonomous, meaning that they act on their own, in the world, without a human remote controller. We use autonomous biorobots to re-enact the game of life, evolution.

By the way, I'm a professor of Biology and Cognitive Science at Vassar College. I'm also the Chairman of the Biology Department and the Director of the Interdisciplinary Robotics Research Laboratory.
But I'm NOT John Long, the famous paleontologist and author, nor John Long, the famous rock climber and author, nor John Long, the author who lives in France, nor John Long, the former Detroit Piston. Phew. Who, then, am I? I'm John H. Long, Jr., the one holding a Ph.D. in Zoology (specializing in biomechanics) from Duke University, and Darwin's Devices is my first book.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2016great book with information for he aspiring big wall/aid climber
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2010This book covers everything required to ascent and descend big wall with the clarity to make it as safe as possible for readers. Great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2015I received a different edition of this book, still 1994, but the cover is of a climber lying on a portaledge. I am not sure what the difference is, but that is what I have noticed. Otherwise, for being "used," it is in perfect condition and I am very happy with it! The only reason I gave this 4 stars and not 5 is because the item I received is not as shown.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2004I read this book...did a lot of practicing, (got spanked a few times) and then climbed the Washinton Column's Southern Route & Prow along with the regular route on Half Dome and Zodiac on El Cap!
No book will make you a good aid climber...but this book does as much as possible.
If you're in doubt - buy it, its definetely worth the cover price.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2016This book has some good info, bu I thought the competitor book by Chris McNamara (Supertopo) had more clear instruction and informative photos. This book is perhaps a better discussion of big wall climbing than the Supertopo book, but less instructional.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have
Very good book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dated and overly complex
It turns out instructional books have come a long way since 1994! A one stop shop for learning big wall techniques this is not. The style is clumsy, pictures poor and detail lacking in important areas. It's not all bad with some good advice and real life examples but on instructing the complex techniques of big wall climbing it does not fill it's remit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr hilfreich
Sehr informativ und anschaulich.Unterhaltsam. Jümar ohne Zweitkarabiner beim traversieren etc.- Pfui, pfui!)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Big Wall Book
John & John have a vast amount of experience and it shows! This is clearly a must read book for anyone thinking of setting out on a big wall adventure. Thank you so much Johns for getting so many of your thoughts and experiences down in writing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, poor packaging
Great book with good info, arrived in a paper bag style package which isn't fit for a book in my opinion. Mine came with a large crease across the front cover. Still has the info I want but that's a bit dissapointing.
