- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2014The latest version of the Graphic Artists' Guild is about four times the book my last version was, but includes a lot of material not relevant or even extant back then (computer graphics, e.g.). While it doesn't pretend to be a substitute for an agent or attorney, it does have invaluable reference and resources, including sample contracts, release forms, etc. (alone worth the price of the book!) and the professional pay scale for a plethora of art-related jobs (including covers and interiors, salaried positions, imprinted sportswear or printed fabric/wallpaper ) --- you name it, it's in here. Up-to-date coverage of the latest versions of the Copyright laws and where to go for changes, etc. If you aspire to make art for a living, or even a serious hobby, you need this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2016Always packed with great information. The Graphic Artist Guild Handbook though published some what irregularly around every 4 to 5 years. This is the latest version 2013. The the most valuable information to me is chapter 2 is on Copyright and Trademark, resale royalties, practices governing original art and International and Canadian Copyright. That alone is worth the price.
But this handbook covers so much more than copyright law. I appreciate the long chapter on surface design and trade customs. But cartooning, web design, graphic design, illustration it is all in here too .You will refer to this guide daily. It will save you time, money and headaches in the long run.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2017Great book! We had the purchase it for school in my Illustration program and now that I have graduate, I'm finding myself reference it in the "real world" to quote illustration work. From talking with professional illustrators in my area, it seems to be used as the industry standard. It also has a ton of information for other creative fields such as graphic design and web design, but at this point I have only referenced it for illustration. In addition to pricing guidelines it has a ton of information on granting rights to your creative work, different types of usage rights, and a lot of example contracts and forms that will be useful.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2016An essential guide to anyone interested in a career in Graphic Design. I have been teaching graphic design courses in several colleges for many years now and use this book as my textbook for my "Business of Graphic Design" class. it includes excellent explanations of the terms used in graphic design projects and the 2nd half of the book is all about pricing. The newer edition has the most recent pricing but even the older editions are very useful, just adjust the prices upwards for inflation. A very valuable resource.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2014I always wondered if there was a basis for understanding other disciplines in order to collaborate in a project together. This book covers much of that as it gives contracts and language useage of these other disciplines, making a writer comfortable in my pursuit of other creative for mutual gain. I can see that most of my new works will be offered as a collaborative effort, making use of the best parts of each to make a better whole. This book is made better when offered with Business and Legal forms for graphic artists.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2015I'm an Illustrator and Graphic Designer, and this book is seriously a must have/bible for all creatives! It's a very informative book and keeps me in check with what I need legally and how to price my stuff - like the book's title says; Pricing & Ethical Guidelines! I wish there were more clauses that I could pick and choose given the fact that there are so many fixed contracts to choose from and I had to add more because of my situation. I am happy overall! As for the shipping; I am satisfied :) Very quick and hassle free.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2014Ok... like "K" said, it's a dry read (and that's putting it lightly). It's like reading a law textbook, which was a little disappointing for me personally -- keep in mind that I'm bit of a word-a-holic. I go out of my way to look up words (meanings, history, phonetics, etc...), but it was very hard to fully comprehend what I was reading in a single passing. So in my personal opinion, it's a little bit more "sophisticated" and textbook-y than it needs to be. HOWEVER, it's a definite MUST HAVE book. An EXCELLENT resource that will be extremely useful in the very near future and beyond!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2016This book is amazing! When I was in school to become an illustrator, all of my teachers talked highly of the Graphic Artist's Guild and how they have helped so many. This books gives a fair pricing guide, and insights into the industry, business and legal practices. I'm very pleased with this book, and I highly recommend it for anyone who is an artist/illustrator/graphic designer.
